"Dad, Scarlett isn’t some outsider, she’s your own flesh-and-blood granddaughter."

"Hold on." Old Master Yates took another unhurried sip of tea and said leisurely, "Don’t rush to acknowledge her yet. Have you figured out whether this girl is really one of the Yates Family or not?"

Noah Yates laughed and said, "Dad, would I mistake my own daughter? I watched Scarlett grow up; there’s no way I’m wrong."

Old Master Yates disagreed. "For something as important as confirming kinship, it’s not enough for you to ’feel’ you’re not wrong. You need to produce concrete proof."

Noah Yates froze for a moment, then asked a few seconds later, "Dad, the concrete proof you’re talking about is..."

"A DNA paternity test." Old Master Yates slowly spat out the words, his gaze at Scarlett Yates as sharp as a blade. "Real gold doesn’t fear the fire. As long as she truly carries the blood of the Yates Family, there’s no reason not to recognize her. Little girl, if I say you should go take a paternity test, are you willing to go?"

Noah Yates was a bit surprised and frowned slightly. "Dad, there’s no need to do any paternity test. Scarlett lived with me for over ten years, that alone is the best proof. There’s no need to fuss with DNA testing. My own daughter—there’s no way I’d get that wrong."

If Scarlett Yates had guessed correctly, since Old Master Yates had brought this up, chances were he’d meddle with the test results when the time came.

If the test really concluded she wasn’t Noah Yates’s daughter, then he and his father could toss each other around as much as they liked—she’d actually save herself a lot of trouble.

That was precisely why Scarlett Yates agreed so readily.

Seeing he couldn’t make a scene over this for now, Old Master Yates pretended to glance over the crowd, then asked, "Mr. Mason, why don’t I see that girl Rose? Where did she go?"

"That girl’s been naughty lately and refuses to make progress. I sent her off to practice the piano."

"But how come I heard someone say she was punished because of a necklace?" Old Master Yates lifted his eyelids as he spoke, giving Scarlett Yates a look.

Noah Yates said lightly, "Who’s been gossiping in front of you again, Dad? I’ve spoiled that child since she was little and, yes, I’ve overindulged her. Now I just want to discipline her properly. I can’t let her keep slacking off like this. It has nothing to do with anything else."
