Chapter 579: Chapter 28: The Way of Nature
Right now, he was focused on a single task.
He continued to devise a method for casting Magic within an area covered by the Magic Net without being monitored.
[Analyzing target area energy monitoring system...]
[System Name: Magic Net]
[Operating Principle: Utilizes a network of energy-sensing nodes spread throughout the domain to continuously collect, record, and compare fluctuation data from all Dimensional Energy activity in the region. When anomalous fluctuations matching the signature of "Magic Casting" are detected, an alarm is triggered. The caster’s location, Magic type, and Energy intensity are recorded.]
The operating principle of the Magic Net, to put it bluntly, was actually very simple.
Data comparison.
It recorded the natural patterns of all Dimensional Energy operating within this region.
Then, when someone cast Magic, artificially inducing Dimensional Energy, the resulting Energy Fluctuations would create a discrepancy with the natural fluctuations in the database.
The greater the discrepancy, the more intense the alarm.
Therefore, to cast Magic in an area covered by the Magic Net without being discovered, there were theoretically only two methods.
Either make your own Magic fluctuations completely identical to natural fluctuations.
Or, make it so your Magic fluctuations aren’t in the Magic Net’s database at all.
The latter method was difficult to achieve.
This was because the Magic Net had existed for an unknown number of years and had recorded an unknown amount of data.
Even when a Wizard cast a newly created spell, the fundamental patterns of its Energy Fluctuations couldn’t escape the established framework.
But Murphy had thought of another possibility.
’What if my magical fluctuations aren’t considered "Magic" at all?’
’What if the way I manipulate Dimensional Energy is classified as a "natural phenomenon" in the Magic Net’s database?’
The Celestial Craftsmanship "Slightly Accomplished" contained a vast amount of knowledge about the resonance between Dao Patterns and the heavens and earth.
Among them was a special class of Dao Patterns known as Celestial Phenomenon Dao Patterns.
These Dao Patterns resonated with the natural laws of the world to trigger specific natural phenomena.
For example, drawing a Rain Praying Dao Pattern in an arid region could cause atmospheric moisture to converge, eventually resulting in rainfall.
Drawing a Wind-aided Dao Pattern on a seafaring vessel could influence the winds, allowing the ship to sail faster.
The Energy Fluctuations triggered by these Dao Patterns were almost identical to the wind, rain, thunder, and lightning of the natural world, the pulse of mountains and rivers, and the flow of Spiritual Qi.
Because, in essence, they were simply imitating Nature.
More importantly, he came from an entirely different system.
Rodrick’s abnormal behavior was due to the same principle.
When facing an existence far more powerful than his own, a person might maintain a respectful facade, but deep down, they might harbor defiance, reluctance, or even resentment.
But Rodrick did not.
He displayed nothing but pure awe and obedience.
That was, of course, because when Murphy first met him, he had quietly left an Intimidating Heart Dao Pattern on him.
The effect of this pattern was to subtly influence the target’s emotions and cognition, making them develop a psychological tendency of awe and obedience toward the one who drew the pattern.
The Energy Fluctuations it triggered were classified by the Magic Net as "natural hormonal changes resulting from emotional fluctuations caused by the surrounding environment."
It was classified as a normal physiological and cognitive phenomenon.
And so, Rodrick became the way he was now.
Respectful on the surface, and respectful in his heart.
Even if Murphy told him to lead the way to the Nightmare World, he would only think, ’This is perfectly natural,’ rather than wonder, ’Why would a Level 3 Wizard need me, of all people, to guide him?’
Everything was very natural.
Perfectly logical.
THUMP, THUMP.
Just then, footsteps sounded.
Murphy opened his eyes.
At the courtyard gate, Martha and Lina were standing there.
Martha wore a clean set of simple clothes. The wound on her face had been redressed with fresh gauze, looking much tidier than before.
She held Lina by the hand. The little girl, who was also in a clean dress with her hair in two small pigtails, hid timidly behind her mother.
They stood at the courtyard gate, looking at Murphy sitting in the wicker chair, hesitating, not daring to come forward.
The two guards posted at the gate glanced at them, then at Murphy, and did not stop them.
Murphy didn’t speak.
He just watched them quietly.
Martha bit her lower lip, took a deep breath, and led Lina into the courtyard.
She walked very slowly, each step careful and deliberate. She stopped about three paces from Murphy, then her knees buckled, and she knelt.
Lina, pulled by her mother, also knelt down.
She knelt on the cold flagstones, her small knees aching from the hard surface. But she didn’t dare make a sound, only staring timidly at Murphy with wide eyes.
Murphy watched them and asked coolly:
"What is this?"
Martha lowered her head, her body trembling slightly, and took a deep breath:
"My lord... I... I came to thank you..."
She paused, then quickly added: "And about last night... You saved me and my daughter... If it weren’t for you, we... we would have been..."
She couldn’t continue.
Tears burst from her eyes, slid down her cheeks, and dripped onto the cold flagstones.
Seeing her mother cry, Lina’s small mouth trembled, and her eyes reddened as well.
Murphy didn’t speak, just watched them quietly.
Martha wiped her tears with the back of her hand, trying to compose herself.
She raised her head and looked at Murphy, her eyes filled with gratitude, awe, and a certain determination:
"My lord, we have nothing... No money, nothing to repay you with... I..."
She bit her lip, slowly raised her hand, and undid the first button of her collar.
Murphy’s eyes twitched slightly.
Martha’s movements didn’t stop.
Her fingers trembled as she undid the second button, revealing a patch of fair skin below her collarbone.
Her face was flushed crimson, but her hand did not stop. Instead, her movements were very determined:
"My lord, I... I know I’m not worthy... But this is the only thing I have to offer... If you wouldn’t disdain it, I..."
She didn’t get to finish her sentence.
She was interrupted by Murphy:
"Get up."
Martha froze.
She looked up at Murphy, her eyes filled with confusion and helplessness.
Murphy sat in the wicker chair, bathed in sunlight that coated him in a faint golden glow:
"That won’t be necessary."
Martha knelt on the ground, suddenly feeling at a complete loss, not knowing what to do.
Then, she suddenly remembered something.
She turned, pulled Lina in front of her, placed her hands on her daughter’s shoulders, and pushed her toward Murphy.
"My lord, Lina, she... she’s still young, but she’s very well-behaved... She’ll grow up, she’ll be very beautiful, she’ll... no... she’s already beautiful..."
Pushed by her mother, Lina’s small body tilted forward.
She didn’t understand what her mother was saying, but she sensed her mother’s emotions. She looked at Murphy timidly, her clear, jade-green eyes filled with a mixture of pleading, pitifulness, and begging as tears streamed down her face.
Then, she also mimicked her mother, reaching out a small hand to grab the ties of her blouse:
"M-My lord... I... I’ll be obedient too... I’ll listen... to my mother..."
Just as her fingers were about to pull.
Suddenly, her hand stopped.
No matter how hard she tried, that tiny finger could not move another inch.
As if held in place by some invisible force.
Lina froze.
She looked up at Murphy, a trace of confusion and terror flashing in her eyes, and her tears flowed even more fiercely.
Martha froze as well.
She found that her own hands couldn’t move either, unable to continue:
"M-My lord... D-Did I do something wrong... If-If you’re not satisfied, please just say so, I..."
Her voice trembled, her face filled with terror and confusion.
She didn’t understand why he wouldn’t let her continue.
’Am I too ugly? Unworthy?’
’Or is Lina too young? Does he not like that?’
Her mind raced. Then, as if an idea had struck her, she snapped at the crying Lina:
"Stop crying!"
