Chapter 582: Chapter 30: Imperial Citizen
The void rift closed silently behind them.
Cheris walked barefoot across the soft, thick carpet, her long, flax-colored hair swaying gently with each step.
Her other hand still gripped Murphy’s wrist tightly. Her slender fingers possessed an immense strength that he couldn’t resist.
Murphy let her pull him along, following half a step behind her as they returned to the New Realm.
It was still daytime, as if not much time had passed since they entered the Nightmare World.
Sunlight still streamed through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, casting bright patches of light on the office floor.
Cheris released his hand and took a few light steps, stopping in front of a large leather swivel chair.
She didn’t sit down. Instead, she turned around, a wide smile on her face as she looked at Murphy.
Murphy stood his ground, meeting her gaze with a calm expression.
Suddenly, Cheris let out a soft, "Hm?"
She tilted her head, her gaze slowly moving down from Murphy’s face to her own bare feet, then back up to meet his eyes.
"Hrmmm—" she drew out the sound, a hint of slyness in her voice. "Were you looking at my toes?"
Murphy didn’t deny it, speaking calmly.
"I was."
Hearing this, Cheris’s turquoise eyes lit up as if she had discovered a fun new toy.
She glanced down at her feet, then lifted one and wiggled it gently in the air.
Her toes, painted with glossy black polish, shimmered in the sunlight. They were perfectly shaped like jade, her instep was fair, and her arch formed a graceful curve.
"Why were you looking?"
she asked, her voice laced with curiosity and a touch of playfulness.
Murphy said coolly,
"I was observing you, as a whole. In the process, I noticed your feet. You aren’t wearing shoes. And as I recall, you were wearing sandals before."
Cheris blinked, raising a slender index finger and wagging it gently in the air.
"One millisecond."
A slight twitch crossed Murphy’s brow.
Cheris continued with a grin, "You looked at my toes for one extra millisecond."
"At our level, we can easily perceive where others are looking. When you looked at me, your gaze lingered on my face for seven milliseconds, my chest for ten, my arms for six, my fingers for eight, my thighs for nine, my calves for five..."
She paused, the corners of her lips curling up slightly.
"My toes, eleven milliseconds."
Cheris rose onto her tiptoes, lifting one foot even higher to reveal the crescent-shaped arch of her fair, soft sole.
"That one extra millisecond reveals your... preference."
Murphy’s brow twitched again, a change so subtle it was almost imperceptible.
But of course, Cheris caught it.
A triumphant glint flashed in her eyes, and her voice held a teasing note.
"Just as I thought. The ritual wasn’t completed last time, so you’re feeling dissatisfied. You want to—"
She drew out the word:
"Lick."
Murphy’s expression remained indifferent, his voice calm and steady.
"That time discrepancy was caused by me noticing you weren’t wearing shoes. It doesn’t mean anything."
Cheris tilted her head, staring at him for a moment before slowly lowering her foot.
But the instant her feet touched the ground, she suddenly went up on her toes again.
The movement was so fast it seemed like a casual shift of her weight.
Then she blinked, looking at Murphy with a grin.
"One millisecond."
Murphy said nothing.
Cheris extended her index finger, pointing to the tip of her foot.
"Just now, when I went on my toes, you paid attention for another extra millisecond."
Murphy continued,
"Your movement drew my attention. That’s called inducement. It doesn’t mean anything."
Hearing this, Cheris didn’t get angry. Instead, her smile grew wider.
She clasped her hands behind her back, leaned forward slightly, and looked up at Murphy, her turquoise eyes sparkling with a sly light.
"So, you can lick it, you know."
"I don’t mind."
Murphy watched her, silent for a moment before speaking.
"What are you really trying to do?"
Cheris’s eyes narrowed into two crescent moons.
She didn’t answer right away.
Instead, she just kept her eyes narrowed, staring at Murphy as if admiring an interesting sight.
After a few seconds, she finally spoke slowly, a hint of smugness in her voice.
"Another three milliseconds."
Murphy’s brow furrowed slightly.
Cheris continued, "When I said ’you can lick it,’ you looked at me for an extra three milliseconds."
She brought her hands from behind her back, crossed them over her chest, and lifted her small chin slightly, speaking in a tone that said, ’I’ve already seen through everything.’
"See? You really do want to lick it."
"Admit it."
Murphy was silent for a few seconds before speaking slowly.
"This is entrapment."
"If you didn’t keep bringing it up, how could I possibly look for that much extra time?"
At his words, Cheris’s eyes curved even more with her smile.
"So, you admit you looked."
"For people like us, looking for a few dozen milliseconds is no different from a normal person staring for a minute or two."
"I’m telling the truth."
"You can lick it, you know."
Murphy: "..."
Cheris looked at him, the laughter in her turquoise eyes practically overflowing.
Then, she let out a PFFT of a laugh and fell back, sinking into the swivel chair that was suddenly right behind her.
She leaned against the back of the chair and crossed her legs, her fair, bare foot swaying gently in the air. The black toenail polish glittered in the sunlight.
"Alright, alright. I’ll stop teasing my toy."
"There’s something important to be done now..."
"Xiaoqi."
The instant her voice fell, the light inside the office seemed to distort slightly.
