Chapter 601: Chapter 39: An Old Acquaintance
If Alonso’s senses weren’t deceiving him,
The young man in the long black robe, the one whose arm was held so naturally by the girl, carried the aura of the Old Realm.
Though the aura was exceptionally well-hidden, like a vein of ore buried deep within the earth and covered by layer upon layer of disguise, Alonso’s eyes still caught the faintest, almost imperceptible trace of it.
No one should assume that, just because he was a First-Level Wizard, he was incapable of uncovering the secrets of this powerful individual.
After all, he was the first one to tear through the veil of the Church Court and march to Taymer Palace to proclaim a heretical declaration. He was also the Wizard who had personally opened the passage to the Deep Red Wilderness in the Blackstone Mountains and guided the descent of the Silver Tower.
These were not feats just anyone could accomplish.
It required someone of both power and merit.
And he had both.
The reason for this was his innate, special constitution.
Yes, he possessed a special constitution.
From birth, his eyes possessed some of the effects of the True Knowledge Technique, allowing him to see through to a certain degree of truth.
Whether it was hidden fluctuations of Magic or deliberately concealed auras, they would always reveal a hard-to-disguise trace to his eyes.
Of course, he was exceptionally good at hiding this ability.
He used these eyes only to explore ruins, acquire benefits, increase his power, and accumulate merits, never once revealing his secret.
And so, here in the New Realm, no one knew of his ability either.
He was glad no one knew.
He was now all too familiar with the rotten nature of people in the New Realm.
If his constitution were ever discovered, he’d be captured and have his organs harvested, compensated with nothing but a paltry sum of money.
Of course, he understood completely.
After all, he had done the same back in the Old Realm, and he’d been too stingy to even offer money.
And now, those same eyes were telling him that the young man before him possessed the aura of the Old Realm.
’Who is he?’
’Why does he have the aura of the Old Realm?’
’Is he like me, someone who came from the Old Realm to the New? Or is he...’
Before Alonso could think further, a commotion beside him pulled his attention back to the present.
The local waiters had completely changed their tune.
The young men who had just been giving him cold stares and mocking sneers were now all wearing obsequious, fawning smiles.
The young waiter who had rushed forward first was now bent at the waist, speaking in a fawning, deferential tone.
"My Lady, welcome to the Silver Tower! This way, please. The auction hall is on the third floor, and there’s a dedicated elevator that goes directly there!"
The girl didn’t even look at him.
She simply kept her arm linked with the young man’s, her gaze sweeping casually over her surroundings as if none of this concerned her.
The young waiter’s smile froze for an instant but quickly returned. He kept his back bent, his tone growing even more sycophantic.
"My Lady, would you require a guide? I’m very familiar with the premises and can give you an overview of today’s auction items..."
The girl finally glanced at him.
Her emerald eyes, as sharp as a cat’s, now held a trace of careless languor.
"That won’t be necessary."
Her voice was sweet and tinged with childishness, but it sent a shiver down the young waiter’s spine.
He hastily took a step back, not daring to utter another word.
The other waiters also scurried out of the way, not daring to approach.
As much as they coveted a tip, they knew better than anyone who they could afford to pester and who they absolutely could not.
And this girl was clearly the type you didn’t mess with.
Just then, the manager’s voice, tinged with urgency, came from behind them.
"Lady Douglas! My goodness, you’ve graced us with your presence! Forgive my tardy welcome, truly, forgive me!"
The manager hurried forward to greet them, the smile on his face even more fawning than the waiters’, his back bent so low he was nearly parallel to the floor.
"It is an honor for the Silver Tower that you could attend today’s auction! Please, come right in! I will personally show you the way!"
Cheris glanced at him, the corners of her lips turning up in a teasing smile.
"Oh? You know who I am?"
The manager replied hastily, "Of course, of course! Who in all of Zlesko City doesn’t know the great name of Lady Douglas? Your presence truly makes our humble establishment shine!"
As he spoke, his gaze involuntarily flicked to the young man beside Cheris.
The young man in the long black robe had a calm expression and a placid gaze. Standing next to Cheris, he showed none of the awkwardness one would expect from a mere attendant.
Instead, he exuded an indescribable air of composure.
It was as if he and Cheris were equals.
A flicker of doubt passed through the manager’s mind, but he quickly suppressed it.
He knew that whoever could stand beside Lady Douglas was not someone he had any right to question.
He quickly plastered on an even more fawning smile.
"And this gentleman is...?"
Cheris tilted her head and looked at Murphy, a mischievous glint in her emerald eyes.
She didn’t say a word, just waited.
Waiting to see how Murphy would respond.
Murphy’s calm gaze swept over the manager’s sycophantic face as he stated coolly:
"Melfield."
The manager froze for a second before nodding vigorously. "Yes, of course, Mr. Melfield! This way, please, this way!"
He spoke while stepping aside and gesturing for them to proceed.
Hearing this, Cheris’s emerald eyes suddenly lit up.
She turned her head to look at Murphy, the corners of her mouth curving wider and wider, until finally, she let out a snort of laughter.
The sound was as crisp and clear as a silver bell, echoing through the entryway.
The manager and the waiters all froze, not understanding why this important person had suddenly started laughing.
But Cheris paid their stares no mind.
She just kept smiling as she held Murphy’s arm, leaning close to his ear to whisper:
