Wizard: Starting With Synthesized Gems
Chapter 740: The Bloodline School Universal Spell, Burn to Cinders!Wizard Cis stood on his mahogany tree boat, looked toward Wizard Kelt who had caught up, and then at the Sun-Herding Dragon that Locke had transformed into, and furrowed his brow slightly.
They were now in hot pursuit of Witch Esther, pressing close behind her, with a sky-blotting swarm of wyverns on all sides.
Locke even raised his dragon head and spotted, above the wyvern swarm, a floating fortress drifting motionlessly over the Dragon Mountain Range, its propulsion long since exhausted. Unlike the cities built by human wizards, it was suffused with an ancient and primordial atmosphere, with ruin gates upon it that looked like the gates of giants.
Locke felt a chill in his heart. That had to be what the legends called an Ancient Sky Ruin, said to appear only within Chasm territory.
It was said that even the current wizard civilization had lost all records of who had constructed these ancient ruins.
He had not expected that, having pursued his quarry into Chasm territory, he would encounter such an ancient ruin even on the outer edges.
However, while he was still at the First Circle stage, he had no intention whatsoever of entering a forbidden place like this to court death.
At this moment, were it not for the mission at hand, he would have had a hard time resisting the urge to explore that ruin properly.
A place like that ancient ruin was also quite a valuable resource point.
Wizard Cis asked Wizard Kelt, "Wizard Kelt, have you not dealt with that obstructive Sun-Herding Dragon yet?"
Wizard Kelt started to speak but thought better of it, unsure how to explain.
His face flushed red. As a Second Circle wizard, he had been unable to deal with a Second Circle-grade dragon for so long. This was deeply embarrassing.
Wizard Kelt said, "I apologize, Lord Cis. That dragon is extremely cunning. It was pretending earlier to have difficulty moving and poor coordination, which made me careless. Then out of nowhere it became agile all of a sudden."
"It took advantage of my carelessness and attacked me by surprise!"
"I will deal with it right now!"
Wizard Cis stood on his lone-tree boat and looked back toward where Locke was, then said, "Forget it. There is no need."
"Because, even if we spend the effort to eliminate that dragon, there is no positive gain in it. Look at... that dragon."
Wizard Kelt's eyes went wide, for what appeared within the wyvern swarm was a dragon the size of a small mountain, carrying sun ring-level magic pressure.
That dragon was like a miracle of the world. Its sheer size rivaled an entire superscale mountain range, and even the individual details of its scales were clearly visible.
It was a Death Dragon.
A special and exceptionally powerful individual within the dragon race.
Said to inevitably bring death to its enemies, leaving absolutely no chance of survival.
When a wizard laid eyes on it, they were right to feel afraid, because the Death Dragon possessed an extraordinarily high aggression drive and held a deep aversion to anyone with the power to resist it.
It would attempt to kill every powerful individual in its vicinity.
At this moment, that Death Dragon swept a cold gaze across them, and its gaze came to rest briefly on the Sun-Herding Dragon.
Then the Death Dragon's gaze shifted away from Locke very quickly, seemingly not particularly interested, and what it was truly interested in was Wizard Cis and Witch Esther.
The Death Dragon would attempt to kill every presence in its surroundings that might be capable of resisting its power.
At the same time, with a Death Dragon now present, there was no longer any point in hunting down a Sun-Herding Dragon.
Since another king among dragons had appeared here, even if the Sun-Herding Dragon were to disappear, the dragon disaster would absolutely not end.
This was also the most terrifying aspect of a dragon disaster. It was endless, with one powerful dragon-race creature after another emerging in a continuous stream.
Locke was also startled by the sight of this Death Dragon. His own body was already enormous enough, roughly the height of a building ten or more stories tall, yet before this Death Dragon he was like a miniature toy dragon.
The Death Dragon was like a continent moving through the sky. Natural magic inscriptions covered every one of its scales, and its own scale armor was the finest defensive magical artifact in existence.
The Death Dragon swept through the air and collided directly into the ancient ruin, and the ruin immediately began to crack and crumble apart, with vast quantities of architecture and treasures raining down from the sky and tumbling toward the Dragon Mountain Range below.
The Ancient Sky Ruin was directly smashed to pieces by the Death Dragon and sent crashing to the ground.
Roar!
The Death Dragon let out a furious roar, as though it intended to kill every wizard within its sight, and immediately broke off in direct pursuit of Esther at the front.
Seeing this, Locke felt a sudden jolt of alarm. Esther had been marked by the Death Dragon.
The Death Dragon was like a shadow falling beneath death itself, displaying the full power of a sun ring-grade dragon. The vast shadow it cast swept over Esther.
Its magic pressure panel was simply unbelievable.
And the moment Esther was engulfed by its shadow, her skin turned ashen all over and her magical power began rapidly declining.
The Death Dragon's shadow could plunder the life force and soul from others.
And so in any stretch of land covered by the Death Dragon's shadow, all living things, whether animals or plants, would die in great numbers. Their souls would transform into spirit essences and converge toward the Death Dragon's outstretched wings.
For this reason, the Death Dragon was considered one of the most dangerous existences in all of Chasm territory.
Not because the Death Dragon possessed combat strength in a class of its own, but because its abilities were so devastatingly convenient for slaughter, and because it was so boundlessly enthusiastic about killing powerful beings.
Watching Esther stiffen and seize up, a flash of satisfaction crossed Wizard Cis's eyes, and he drew his peach bow, ready to fire an arrow at Witch Esther, completely breaking down her combat power and sealing her to be brought back to Golden Crown Mountain for Witch Yekaterina to deal with.
At least for now, the situation had not escalated too far. There was still room for de-escalation.
Witch Esther's eyes flashed with a trace of panic. She had not anticipated being marked by a Death Dragon at this moment. That was something that could bring death even to a sun ring wizard.
At the same time, Locke saw this scene and also felt a jolt of alarm.
For a moment he felt that, indeed, an ordinary wizard trying to help a sun ring wizard escape, even with someone assisting covertly from behind the scenes, was simply too difficult.
But at precisely this moment, as if on cue, Wizard Kelt apparently took heart at having Golden Crown Mountain's wizards nearby, and so his courage returned.
He was at it again.
He actually turned to face Locke and once again deployed the Serene Prairie. But this time it was not his Grand Magic with the Vetiver Assassination Storm as its foundation. Instead, he used the Grand Magic to enhance one of his Second Circle spells, casting a Second Circle spell augmented by a Grand Magic Rune, the Vetiver Spear Formation.
One stalk after another of vetiver transformed into spears standing upright before him, and then, like a volley of javelins hurled by an army of ten thousand soldiers in formation, they hurtled toward Locke.
And in that instant, Locke thought to himself, "Wizard Kelt truly is the most considerate wizard toward me at Golden Crown Mountain, besides Teacher."
"I still owe him magic stones that I have not repaid."
"Now that he is directly attacking me and giving me a perfect excuse, I can find an opportunity to help Witch Esther. The Death Dragon is powerful, but merely diverting its attention, as a Second Circle wizard, is not something I cannot do."
At this moment, the flames across Locke's entire body surged and blazed, fire erupting and scattering like sparks. He burned all of the dragon blood within his body with full force, converting every drop into dragon power.
After using the world marvel to become a true dragon, he had finally come to understand how bloodline school wizards perceived the bloodline power of magical creatures, and how they combined that bloodline power with their spell models and magical power.
The key lay in Burning!
Thinking carefully, during his First Circle stage, he had used the Scorpion Woman's Ring and True Blood obtained in the Land of Six Towers to cast quite a few bloodline school universal spells. Using those bloodline spells required consuming the bloodline power within his body.
But in truth, consuming was a mistaken framework, one built on the assumption that he was first and foremost a wizard.
It was not consumption of magical power or bloodline power. It was burning one's bloodline power, exchanging it for a corresponding form of strength.
And now, having understood how a pure-blooded dragon wielded its own power, he knew how to integrate bloodline school spell models with this Sun-Herding Dragon.
At this moment, while most of his spells were unavailable and only his essentially personal Grand Magic and permanent defensive force field could be used, there was one other thing he could also use.
The three drops of True Blood residing deep within his bloodline essence.
Even having transformed into a dragon, those three drops of True Blood had at most shifted from one type of bloodline essence into another.
So he could still use these three True Blood.
But First Circle spells were of no use to him now. However, he was now a Second Circle wizard, and he had spent a long time studying these three drops of True Blood. To better make use of them, he had also picked up some bloodline school spells here and there.
That gave him at least some foundation to work from.
Moreover, as a Second Circle wizard who was also a Second Circle dragon, his understanding of bloodline magic was elevated to a commanding vantage point, granting him his own unique insight.
And on top of that, having now grasped that the key to bloodline magic lay in Burning, a spark of inspiration struck him. Drawing on instinct and a sudden flash of insight, he forcibly merged the three drops of True Blood into a single drop, and through the process by which the three First Circle bloodline school universal spell models would be indirectly combined, made slight modifications to the three spell models.
Then the bloodline throughout his entire body began to boil.
What he was effectively doing was taking a flash of inspiration and forcibly modifying three stable First Circle spell models on the fly. In botanical magic this would have been utterly absurd, but this happened to be bloodline magic.
Bloodline magic was different from botanical magic. It truly did operate on intuition and instinct by its very nature.
At this moment, it felt as though the blood throughout Locke's entire body was burning, his entire being ablaze.
"Not good. It seems I pushed the modifications too far. The three spell models are both repelling and combining with each other, and can barely function. But... the power is rising continuously."
What he was doing amounted to using himself as an experimental subject, but on the one hand, Esther's situation was critical and he had no choice but to treat a dead horse as though it were alive.
And on the other hand, this body's health bar was entirely separate from his original body's health bar, and he only had one day to use it, so he might as well make the most of it.
"The power is surging upward. I have at least grasped the most essential thing about bloodline magic, which is Burning. Not using and consuming magic pressure, but burning magic pressure, exchanging the burning of magic pressure for power, which means the instantaneous burst force will be extraordinarily powerful."
Locke named the spell model he had forcibly produced through the combination of his dragon physique and his wizard's intuition the Second Circle spell, Burn to Cinders.
In the next moment, a column of fire erupted from his chest, as though the expanding flames were about to burst his body apart.
And then Locke opened his dragon maw and unleashed a dragon's breath toward the Serene Prairie Grand Magic. In a single instant, the Blazing Sun Dragon's Breath, amplified by the bloodline school universal spell, Burn to Cinders, surged to multiple times its original power and condensed to an extraordinary degree, transforming into a single blazing pillar of light.
It split the sky, and cleaved the world.
Then the pillar of light passed through the Serene Prairie, swept past Wizard Kelt's face, and that terrifyingly powerful dragon flame, condensed to the width of a pair of chopsticks, grazed his face so closely that it nearly frightened him senseless.
And the pillar of light passed beyond him and struck directly at the Death Dragon.
Boom.
The pillar of light struck the Death Dragon on its back, and the firelight immediately scattered in all directions, reflected by the Death Dragon's back, whose scales shimmered like mirror armor, redirecting Locke's dragon breath and sending it hurtling in every direction.
The Death Dragon turned its head in fury and let out a discontented roar at Locke, as though saying, aim better next time.
As it turned, the reflected dragon breath pillar angled from below upward, slicing toward Wizard Cis like a cutting laser.
While Wizard Cis was by no means afraid of an attack at this level, it still broke his concentration, causing him to abandon the Peach Bow Thorn Arrow and recite a defensive spell that blocked the dragon breath.
Wizard Cis turned and looked back at Locke and Wizard Kelt with a look of surprise. "That dragon's breath could be this powerful?"
"Even among its own kind, it would be considered strong."
At the same time, the Death Dragon temporarily redirected its target, no longer pursuing Esther, and instead extended a dragon claw toward Wizard Cis.
Esther released her hold on the wyvern king that the dodder had parasitized. That wyvern king had already been rendered useless under the Death Dragon's overwhelming pressure and could barely move.
But at this moment, floating silently in the sky of the Chasm territory before Esther was a small void flyer bearing the insignia of the Rose Academy.
Esther's eyes lit up with joy. "Wonderful. Finally, as the Throne has entrusted, they have come at last."
Esther turned and called out to those behind her, "All of you from Golden Crown Mountain, I have simply resigned. What issue is there with that? I joined Golden Crown Mountain as an employment relationship, not as though I had signed away my life. Golden Crown Mountain can give me an ultimatum of either advancing or leaving. So why can I not resign and seek a new position?"
"To begin with, I was only a temporary employee at Golden Crown Mountain!"
Esther swiftly flew toward the small flyer.
"Before this, Throne Yekaterina clearly had an opening for a leading wizard instructor position at Golden Crown Mountain that she could have given me."
"Only by obtaining a leading wizard instructor position could I have escaped the evaluation pressure of being temporary staff. But she rejected my proposal and gave that contract to another sun ring wizard. Given that, is it not perfectly natural for me to find another job?"
Wizard Cis's expression turned ugly.
"Sophistry."
"You betrayed the Throne over nothing more than a teaching position?"
Esther's eyes carried a contemptuous look.
"Nothing more than a teaching position?"
"And yet it is for this very thing that we fight each other to the death, day and night without rest. My heart is not generous enough to see further than this one thing. You would not give it to me. Are you also going to forbid me from finding it on my own?"
