Chapter 1189: Chapter 486: Cognitive Virus
The twilight in the Central Lands is always exceptionally dazzling.
Ron didn’t have time to admire the long-lost sunset scenery before he was called to the meeting room by Cassandra.
A holographic projection hovered in the center of the meeting room, displaying real-time battle conditions far in the fourth quadrant.
The silver Vital Fleet moved densely like a shoal of fish in the deep sea.
Their formations were so perfect that every ship executed actions coordinated to the millisecond.
In contrast, the Wizard Fleet’s formation showed obvious signs of retreat, the original attack wedge had degenerated into a defensive ring.
"The situation is more severe than I expected."
Cassandra stood by the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the entire Central Lands, her purple eyes reflecting the distant clouds.
"Three days ago, the Vital People deployed twelve new Star Sky Giant Beasts."
The scenes in the projection switched with her words, showing those awe-inspiring biological weapons.
Each Star Sky Giant Beast had a giant body nearly the size of an asteroid, its surface was covered with organic gun barrels and tentacle-like sensory organs.
"Our fleet is now completely in strategic defense status."
Cassandra’s fingers lightly tapped on the window glass:
"Even Elizabeth from the Elemental Garden started hinting that perhaps we should consider the possibility of a strategic retreat."
This information made Ron frown.
Elizabeth, as the leader of the Elemental Garden, was always known for her enterprising spirit.
It was under her leadership that the Elemental Garden rapidly grew in the Fourth Era to become a giant second only to the Crystal Tower.
If even she began to consider retreat, then the situation at the front was indeed quite critical.
"So."
Cassandra finally turned around, her gaze as sharp as a blade:
"The ’Peaceful Transformation’ plan must be fully implemented immediately, without any further delay."
She gently stroked the Crystal Bracelet on her wrist, and a detailed file unfolded in the air.
A young man, looking no more than twenty-five or six, thin and pale, as if having long lived underground.
He wore a pair of crystal glasses embedded with miniature Runes, obviously not ordinary vision-correcting tools.
But what caught the most attention were the silver threads wrapped around his arms.
"Cedric Mowen. Specializes in sensory cognition and virtual reality construction technology.
His accomplishments in related fields have surpassed most of his peers, even some experienced associate professors."
The archive pages automatically flipped, revealing Cedric’s academic resume.
Ron quickly scanned those dazzling research achievements:
"Standardization of sensory data streams based on neural direct connection"
"Quantitative grading system for pain and pleasure"
"Physiological basis of virtual touch"
...
"Where is he now?"
"Seventh Floor of the research center."
Cassandra’s expression became subtle, as if reminiscing about some unpleasant memories:
"Let me remind you, Cedric has some... unique research habits. Don’t be deceived by his gentle appearance."
"That guy’s understanding of sensory experience has reached a level almost pathological."
.........
The underground area of the Crystal Tower is a realm entirely different from the world above.
The deeper you go, the more the architectural style leans towards purely functional design.
The air on the Seventh Floor underground mixes the sweet and fishy smell of biological nerve fluid, the pungent odor of Alchemy reagents, and a faint hint of blood.
Ron walked along the metal corridor, his footsteps echoing in the empty passageway.
Nameplates on both sides of the corridor marked risk levels in different colors:
"Laboratory Three - Middle Risk, Neuroperception Testing"
"Laboratory Five - Advanced Risk, Consciousness Extraction Experiment"
"Laboratory Six - Extremely High Risk, Soul Contact Experiment"
As he passed each laboratory, Ron could feel subtle energy fluctuations emanating from within.
The nature of these fluctuations varied widely; some were as gentle as a spring breeze, while others carried a chilling malevolence.
The laboratory at the end of the corridor visibly differed from the others.
Heavy steel doors bore a solemn warning inscribed in Ancient Mage text:
"Sensory Cognition Laboratory - Extremely High Risk Area, Unauthorized Entry Forbidden."
Beside the doors was a sophisticated identity verification device.
After verifying his identity, through the observation window on the second door inside, Ron frowned slightly.
Inside, a young man lay quietly on a complex surgical table, his left arm completely exposed.
Around the surgical table stood various precision monitoring equipment.
Dozens of hair-thin silver needles were precisely inserted into specific nerve nodes on his forearm, each needle connected to bioelectric monitoring equipment.
Data streams formed translucent graphs in the air, showing the conductivity and frequency changes of the neural signals in real time.
And Cedric’s right hand was holding a dissection knife.
He used this knife to conduct regular incisions on the skin of his left arm.
What made Ron uncomfortable was the expression on Cedric’s face.
It was a kind of researcher-specific frenzy.
As if what was happening wasn’t a painful self-experiment, but some kind of sacred ritual.
"Thirty-seventh incision, depth 3.2..."
He murmured academic jargon as he operated, his voice devoid of any tremor of pain:
"Sharp pain index 6.7, combined with previous burning sensation at level 3.2... The compound pain index actually reached 9.1, exceeding theoretical expectations by 0.3..."
With each sentence, he left corresponding data on the floating Recording Crystal.
