Chapter 308: Calling Someone Else ’Brother’ Comes So Easily

Chapter 308: Chapter 308: Calling Someone Else ’Brother’ Comes So Easily

"N-no, I didn’t," Yang San explained in a panic.

The Bai Hujun hesitated before stepping forward to speak for him. "Lord Shaoqing, he’s the soldier who was punished by the Young General for spreading rumors and causing trouble. He was assigned to menial labor."

"He smells of firewood, so he must have just come back from the kitchen corps."

Xie Ming’an’s gaze was cold and dark as he scanned the surroundings.

He asked, "Which way is your kitchen corps?"

The Bai Hujun froze. After a moment of thought, he pointed in the opposite direction. "Over there."

As soon as he said it, he realized the implication.

His fierce eyes widened in anger as he cursed at Yang San.

"You bastard! If Lord Shaoqing hadn’t pointed it out, I wouldn’t have noticed. Fetching water isn’t in this direction either. Why did you come from the stables?"

"I..." Yang San looked like he could bite his own tongue off.

Xie Ming’an wasted no more words on him. In a cold voice, he gave a direct order.

"Seize him. Everyone, follow me to the stables to see what’s going on."

"Yes, sir!" The Ministry of Justice guards immediately stepped forward, forcing Yang San down into the snow.

The Bai Hujun was still cursing, "You vile scoundrel, don’t tell me you caused trouble at the stables? If you bring disaster upon our entire army, just see how the Young General deals with you!"

Yang San’s face was ashen, and he trembled with fear.

A moment ago, he had been blinded by anger and hatred. Now, all he felt was a creeping dread.

’I thought no one would find out. Who would’ve imagined it would turn out like this!’

’I’m done for!’

As Xie Ming’an approached the stables, he saw, just as he’d expected, thin wisps of black smoke slowly rising.

The Bai Hujun went around to the back of the stables to look.

Two haystacks that were meant to be dragged inside to feed the horses had been burned to ashes.

He was furious. "That idiot Yang San must have done this. Lord Shaoqing, please allow me to report this to the Young General immediately."

"Wait." Xie Ming’an stood at the entrance, his brow furrowed as he stared at the series of small footprints in the snow.

The footprints vanished right at the stable door.

Meanwhile, the neighing of wild horses echoed from within the stables, one after another. They sounded agitated and chaotic.

A chilling, pitch-black light glinted in the depths of Xie Ming’an’s eyes.

He said bluntly, "Open the door."

"Huh?" The Bai Hujun hesitated. "Lord Shaoqing, you may not be aware, but the horses in here are wild. They have designated handlers."

"The door is closed, which must mean the horses have been let out of their stalls to roam around inside. If we just open the door and go in, I’m afraid you might get hurt."

"How about I go get the stable master? That way, he can..."

Xie Ming’an cut him off, his tone harsh. "I told you to open the door!"

Done wasting words, he strode forward himself and lifted the heavy wooden bar.

The doors swung wide open, sending a thick cloud of snow dust into the air.

Everyone saw a tiny figure in the deepest part of the stable.

She wasn’t even as tall as the stall fences, yet she was using her small hands to herd a wild horse.

"Go on, go inside and eat."

Facing her, the wild horse was as docile as a lamb. With a mouthful of hay, it ambled slowly into its stall.

Shen Ningning immediately closed the stall door and let out a small breath.

Just then, however, she heard the sound of the main doors opening.

The little girl turned to look. The bright light from the snow outside silhouetted the cold figure standing at the entrance, making him appear incredibly dark and imposing.

Xie Ming’an clenched his fists and shouted, "Don’t you know how dangerous it is in here? And you still ran in to play!"

His voice startled the few remaining wild horses that Shen Ningning hadn’t yet herded back into their stalls.

They immediately reared up, letting out agitated neighs.

Then, they charged toward the entrance, straight for Xie Ming’an.

The Bai Hujun’s face paled. "Lord Shaoqing, watch out!"

Before Xie Ming’an could react...

Shen Ningning put her small fingers to her mouth and let out a sharp, clear whistle.

The wild horses immediately changed direction and returned to where they were.

Shen Ningning scampered over, reached out her small hand, and patted each of their heads in turn.

The little girl’s voice was soft and sweet. "What are you all so angry about? If you run away, you won’t get anything to eat."

"Alright, alright, listen to me now. Everyone back to your stalls."

As she spoke, she pulled a handful of grass from her pocket, which the horses snatched away before anyone could get a clear look.

After eating her grass, the wild horses became as gentle as lambs.

It was as if they could understand human speech.

They each ambled leisurely back into their wooden stalls.

Shen Ningning latched all of them in, then let out a breath and dusted off her small hands.

She turned back, her large, limpid eyes glaring at Xie Ming’an.

"Why did you suddenly shout? I had just managed to calm them down, and you almost scared them again."

The Bai Hujun was completely dumbstruck.

Even the handlers who had raised horses since childhood found these wild stallions difficult to subdue.

Yet this little girl before him had controlled them with just a few words?

’Wait, a little girl?’

The Bai Hujun suddenly realized who she was, his expression turning to one of shock. "Princess Funing, is that you? What are you doing here?!"

Shen Ningning walked over unhurriedly on her little feet.

As she passed Xie Ming’an, she didn’t forget to glance up at his annoyed expression.

The little girl huffed and said to the Bai Hujun, "That Deputy Captain from before deliberately led me here and locked me inside."

"But the horses here are very obedient. They’re very well-behaved!"

She had given them a handful of Spirit Grass and a little Spiritual Spring Water, and they had instantly become incredibly affectionate with her.

One mischievous chestnut horse even tried to lick her hair.

Shen Ningning had to push its head away several times with her small hands.

Xie Ming’an’s breathing deepened, and the cold darkness in his eyes grew even more piercing.

"Bring that Yang San here!" he commanded harshly.

A short while later, Yang San was dragged over.

When he saw Shen Ningning standing beside Xie Ming’an completely unharmed, his eyes widened in disbelief.

The little girl walked up to him and huffed twice. "You bad guy. You tried to lock me in the stables."

"Did you think I’d be scared out of my wits?"

Yang San hastily said, "I wouldn’t dare! I wouldn’t dare!"

Inside, however, he was endlessly astonished.

’These wild horses trampled a stable hand to death last year.’

’How could Shen Ningning go in and come out completely unscathed?!’

The Bai Hujun strode forward and punched Yang San squarely in the face.

"You really are a piece of work! Are you trying to bring ruin to our entire barracks?!"

Xie Ming’an noticed a smudge of black soot on Shen Ningning’s cheek.

He took out a handkerchief and offered it to her, his expression unreadable.

However, Shen Ningning looked up, saw his cold expression, and promptly turned her little head away.

She huffed, "I don’t want anything from Lord Shaoqing."

Xie Ming’an’s expression immediately darkened.

A nameless fury rose within him. He turned and snapped, "Report this matter to your Young General at once! He is to be punished severely!"

Jiang Zhi heard the news and came running.

Chen Shaobei had given instructions yesterday, so she was allowed to join the training today.

When she heard that Shen Ningning had almost gotten into trouble here, she rushed over.

Only when Shen Ningning saw her did the stubborn look on her little face fade.

She called out pitifully, "Brother Jiang, this Deputy Captain held a grudge and locked me in the stables just now!"

Jiang Zhi’s expression changed drastically. Her furious gaze fixed on Yang San, who was pinned to the ground, begging for mercy in regret.

She roared, "Fuck!"

Jiang Zhi charged forward, straddled Yang San, and started punching him in the face.

It took the strength of nine bulls and two tigers for everyone to pull Jiang Zhi off.

Even the Bai Hujun couldn’t help but say, "Alright, Jiang Zhi, stop fighting. Don’t violate military regulations. When the Young General arrives, he will naturally deal with this man."

Shen Ningning scampered over to Jiang Zhi’s side and hugged her arm.

The little girl looked up, her face scrunched up as if about to cry.

"He also burned the haystacks, and my face got all sooty."

Jiang Zhi’s heart ached for her. She bent down and wiped Shen Ningning’s little face again and again.

"My poor Ningning. Yang San deserves to die!"

Xie Ming’an stood to the side, watching how easily Shen Ningning called someone else ’Brother’.

The two of them were so close, and when that Jiang Zhi used her own hands to wipe her face, she didn’t resist at all.

Xie Ming’an’s jaw tightened, his face as black as the bottom of a wok.

By the time the news reached Chen Shaobei, he was in the palace, assisting Mo Lingwei with thorny government affairs.

With Changliu Country’s army attacking the border, the Emperor was overwhelmed and had delegated some of his duties to Mo Lingwei.

After finally finishing the urgent reports and memorials, Mo Lingwei put down his brush and stood up to leave.

Chen Shaobei immediately looked up. "Where are you going, Your Highness?"

Mo Lingwei frowned. "The work is done. It’s time you let me go see Shen Ningning, isn’t it?"

Chen Shaobei sighed in resignation. "Your Highness, the war is urgent. Eight-hundred-li express reports could arrive at any moment. Didn’t the Emperor also say that it would be best for you not to leave Zichen Palace recently?"

"Oh," Mo Lingwei acknowledged, but his steps didn’t falter as he continued walking out.

Just then, a little eunuch came stumbling in.

"General Chen, something has happened at your barracks!"

Hearing this, a sneer formed on Mo Lingwei’s thin lips.

He looked back at Chen Shaobei. "See? You have plenty of your own business to attend to. So stop minding mine and go deal with your troubles."

Mo Lingwei was about to leave.

But then he heard the little eunuch’s next words: "Princess Funing was bullied at the barracks!"

Mo Lingwei, who had already reached the doorway, whipped his head around.

The chilling look in his eyes was like a killer’s blade, glinting with palpable malice.

"What?"
