Chapter 47: Chapter XLVII - Vixen

Noah remained perfectly still, his mind seemingly several steps behind what had just happened. He could still feel the warmth of her lips against his, the sensation lingering even after she’d pulled away.

Sage slowly lifted her head from his shoulder, though her hand remained resting on his thigh, where it had been for the past few minutes.

Their eyes met again.

Noah opened his mouth, ready to say something—anything—but the words never came. His lips parted, then closed again as his mind suddenly went blank.

Sage’s lips curved into a small, almost amused smile.

"Was that your first kiss?"

"No, but it felt like it."

"Oh? Did it now?" Her smile widened slightly. "What makes you say that?"

"I don’t know. It just did."

Sage studied him for a moment before leaning a little closer, her eyes never leaving his.

"What a simple answer."

Noah didn’t pull away. He couldn’t, not after he’d already let her take the initiative the first time. If anything, he drew toward her, meeting her halfway this time.

"Again, I’m a simple guy."

A quiet laugh escaped her, soft and breathless against Noah’s cheek. Neither of them said anything after that. They held each other’s gaze for a moment, eyes dark with want, before slowly leaning in until their mouths met again—deeper this time, like they were melting into one another.

Noah slid his hand up, cupping her flushed cheek with gentle possessiveness before his fingers slid into her hair, wrapping around the nape of her neck as he pulled her even closer, their breaths intertwining, warm and heavy between them.

Her lips parted for him with a tiny, needy sigh that made his pulse stutter. He kissed her like he was learning her—slow, deliberate strokes of his tongue, tasting the soft heat of her mouth while his grip on her neck tightened just enough to keep her right there with him. Every brush of her tongue against his sent a low throb through his body, making him press closer, craving the way her chest rose and fell against his as she trembled in his arms.

Sage slid her hand up his torso, her small palm pressing over the frantic thud of his heart. She could feel every heavy beat against her restless fingers, like his body was answering hers.

Her fingers curled tightly into his T-shirt, tugging him closer for one dizzying second, their mouths still fused in a slow, wet kiss. Then, with a soft, teasing push, she eased him back.

Noah reluctantly let their lips part, breathing hard, the warm, sweet taste of her tongue still lingering on his. His forehead rested against hers, their breaths mingling in the tiny space between them. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin and the way her chest rose and fell in shallow little waves.

Sage’s fingers remained curled into his shirt, as though she wasn’t quite ready to let him go.

Her voice dropped to a low, almost husky murmur.

"You kiss like you’ve been thinking about it for a long time."

The faint smile tugging at her lips made the words sound less like an accusation and more like a teasing observation.

Noah swallowed, throat tight.

"Maybe I have."

Sage’s lips curved in a slow, almost wicked little smile. She released her grip on his shirt, her fingers trailing down his chest one last time before she drew away. With a graceful shift, she rose from the bench, leaving him aching and empty where her warmth had been.

She looked down at him, eyes sparkling with teasing promise.

"Well then... what’s a little longer?"

Hearing that, Noah inwardly groaned. The sound nearly escaped his throat as he watched her stand there, looking effortlessly tempting. Despite his frustration, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips.

There was something almost unfair about how easily she got under his skin—and somehow, he couldn’t bring himself to mind. Not like there was anything he could’ve exactly done.

Noah stood up from the bench, almost towering over her.

"That’s evil, you know?"

"How so?"

"You can’t just leave a guy out to dry after all of that. You’re enjoying this way too much."

Sage’s smile widened, the amusement in her expression mixing with something vixenish.

"I can, and I am. What do you plan on doing about it?"

Noah couldn’t help but shake his head, raising his hands in surrender. "You know, most people would probably feel bad after teasing someone this much."

Sage narrowed her eyes, studying him with an almost analytical gaze. Her expression seemed to ask a silent question.

That’s it? He’s not going to apply any pressure?

And he didn’t.

Not because of any of the many reasons running through her head, but simply because, in his own mind, Noah was still just an average-looking Joe. He hadn’t yet realized that the man he saw in the mirror was someone whose beauty could rival—if not surpass—her own.

Sage caught her bottom lip between her teeth, slowly rolling the soft flesh until it flushed a delicate, aroused pink.

What she thought was an innocent little bite sent a fresh spike of heat straight through Noah, drawing his gaze helplessly to her mouth as though she had done it to torment him.

Noah couldn’t resist anymore.

He closed the small distance between them in two quick strides, lifted both hands to cup her face, and kissed her again.

Although stunned at the sudden kiss, Sage didn’t pull away. She didn’t hesitate. Instead, she melted into him with a soft, surrendering sigh that vibrated against his lips, her body pressing flush to his as though she had been waiting for this exact second.

At first the kiss stayed almost modest—warm mouths moving together, tender and exploratory. Then Noah slid one hand down to cradle her chin, his thumb gently tilting her face upward. He deepened the kiss, guiding her lips apart with quiet command. His tongue slipped past the seam of her mouth, gliding over hers in a slow, velvet stroke that made her tremble against him.

Sage answered with a breathless little sound, her tongue rising to meet his in a heated tangle. They moved together. Wet. Slow. Hungry. Her fingers fisted in his shirt once more, pulling him impossibly closer as their breaths mingled and the city night blurred around them.

Noah wrapped one arm around her waist, his large hand splaying possessively across the small of her back as he lifted her clean off the ground by a few inches. Sage gasped sharply into his mouth, the sound sweet and startled, her arms navigating around his neck as her body instinctively arched against him.

He carried her like that—mouths still fused, tongues sliding hot and deep—his steps urgent but careful as he backed them through the open balcony door and into the dim glow of the bedroom. The sun spilled across the floor in warm orange ribbons, but he barely noticed.

With a clumsy, impatient motion, he kicked the door shut behind them and twisted the lock, the soft click echoing like a promise.
