World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 192: Scouting Marine Park (1)A modified Hilux vehicle rode out of the Floyd camp and headed southwest. Fel sat behind the wheel, clutching the steering with a familiarity that surprised Leon.
"You used to drive?" He asked curiously.
She nodded, her gaze fixed on the road. "My father had a pickup truck, so I used to practice whenever he let me."
Leon nodded slowly, his curiosity satiated. Cassie sat in the backseat, letting Nora use her legs for a lap pillow. Although the young lady seemed expressionless, she looked softer around the little girl.
Leon smiled slightly.
Their journey today wasn’t just to help Cassie and Fel complete their evolution requirements faster. It was also a scouting attempt at their route back to their original destination.
Even after becoming the leader of a camp with thousands of survivors, Leon’s desire to find his sister didn’t weaken. Instead, it burned fiercely, and he was growing increasingly impatient.
Since the zombies and the River Dragon had made crossing the Hudson River impossible, his only choice was to pass through Brooklyn and try to reach Staten Island.
Still, he was well aware that he couldn’t rush the process. For today, he’d settle with scouting Marine Park.
The ride was anything but peaceful, as they had to defend against the attacks of mutated eagles and other aerial beasts. These animals were already menaces before the apocalypse. Now that they had suddenly doubled or tripled in size and power, they were even more dangerous.
Thankfully, nothing too dangerous attacked them, and by noon, they reached Marine Park.
This area of Brooklyn wasn’t overly developed like the other parts and barely had any luxurious tall buildings. Instead, the place was much greener with wide open grass fields, marshlands and wetlands, playgrounds, detached family houses and tree-lined residential streets.
Before the apocalypse, it’d have been a nice place to visit during a break—just to relax and enjoy. However, that was then.
Now, the entire neighborhood had changed.
The grass fields now had grasses reaching waist level, thick vines constricting tightly around abandoned cars, trees four or five times taller, and roads almost overgrown with vines and roots.
It seemed like nature was slowly devouring the neighborhood.
’Is the Floyd Mutated Forest going to extend and merge with this place?’
Leon frowned as they stepped out of the parked car and moved into the area. To prevent the Hilux from being damaged, they had chosen to park it somewhere hidden, then scout on foot.
Leon’s gaze swept across the fields of grasses, and his eyes narrowed. Even though he couldn’t see them, he could sense a few mutated beasts lurking in the tall grasses.
"Two Tier One snakes," He said loud enough for the others to hear. "I’ll keep one contained while you deal with the other. Is that fine?"
He asked, glancing at Cassie.
The young lady’s blue eyes brightened, and she nodded. If she were alone, she wouldn’t have dared to attack the mutated snakes. However, with Leon’s presence, she didn’t need to worry about the threat of the other mutated snake.
"Alright, follow me," Leon said, walking into what seemed to have been a rice farm. The soil beneath their feet was soft and muddy, yet it barely hindered their movements.
Soon, they had walked deep into the farmland, and Leon finally stopped. The instant he did, two figures shot at them from the thick grasses—one aiming for Nora while the other lunged at Leon.
’Targeting the weakest and the strongest—smart,’ Leon mused as he threw a punch, striking the mutated cobra’s nose with half his strength.
Bang!
The large creature was forced back slightly, flashing its tongue as it glared at him warily. Cassie had already moved on to intercept the other mutated cobra, holding a pair of daggers in her hands.
Without delay, she danced around the creature and struck at its scales. Despite having thick scales that could repel rounds of bullets, Cassie’s blades dug deep into its flesh, carving wounds and drawing blood.
The snake hissed and recoiled, its hood fully extended. A long forked tongue kept flashing from its mouth as its sharp red eyes locked on the young woman.
She remained unfazed, her back lowered slightly. Only in the past did women fear snakes. Now, it was just another creature to kill.
Cassie waited patiently, watching for even the tiniest reaction from the mutated cobra. Soon, she saw it. Its throat tightened, and she saw its cheeks widen slightly.
Her eyes narrowed, and she dashed to the side the instant its cheeks tightened. A spray of dark red venomous spittle was ejected from the mutated cobra’s lips.
TSSSHHHH!
Several grasses sizzled and withered as soon as the spittle touched them, decaying in mere seconds. Cassie’s gaze became sharper, and she quickly attacked the snake again.
The mutated cobra didn’t just wait for her. Seeing her move, it turned around and struck at her, fangs aiming to sink into her ribs.
Cassie stepped right into its attack, then twisted away at the last moment, causing the fangs to merely brush her side.
She hissed in pain, but didn’t stop. Now behind the cobra, she stabbed into the snake’s hood, driving her daggers deep into the flesh.
This time, she didn’t pull back. Instead, she pressed forward with all her strength, pushing it to the ground and pinning it beneath her.
The mutated cobra hissed and thrashed, but strangely, it couldn’t overpower her even though she was weaker.
Her strike wasn’t aimed at the spine. Instead, she severed the thick bundles of muscle anchoring the hood. The mutated cobra’s neck immediately lost much of its strength, forcing the massive head to sag as it hissed in fury.
She kept it pinned beneath her, then glanced at Leon to see how he was faring. To her surprise, he looked completely relaxed, casually smacking the other mutated cobra down to the earth whenever it tried attacking him.
She immediately looked away, focusing on the snake beneath her. It continued thrashing and even tried attacking her with its tail. However, Cassie dodged each time, not forgetting to twist the daggers so the snake knew the consequences of its actions.
Soon, it stopped trying to attack her and could only twitch helplessly, unable to rise again.
She waited patiently, and soon received her answer. The Star Stream notification appeared before her eyes.
[2. Cripple Ten Tier One Mutated Beasts (7/10)]
Cassie silently exhaled.
"Done."
Without another glance, she drove the second dagger into the back of the cobra’s skull.
[You have slain a Level 34 Tier One Evolved Venom Cobra!]
[You cannot level up!]
[Progress has been stored!]
She swiftly dug out the soul crystal, then stood up from the corpse. With calm steps, she walked towards the other frightened mutated cobra.
