World Evolution Apocalypse: I Possess The Extraction Ability
Chapter 202: Wretched Human!BANG!
The cocoon made of thick roots slammed into the ground, seemingly trying to flatten whatever was trapped inside.
However, the sensation expected by the mutated tree did not come. There was no feeling of crushing flesh and warm blood on its root.
Slowly, it unfurled the flattened roots, revealing... nothing.
The cocoon was empty. If the mutated tree had a face, it would have shown a shocked expression.
The creature didn’t know about Leon’s affinity for shadows and darkness, so it assumed that trapping him would be enough. However, that trap had given Leon the darkness element he needed to activate Shadow Teleportation. He wasn’t really expecting it to work, since shadows seemed different from darkness. However, after remembering Thyra’s teachings, he still tried it out, and it worked perfectly.
It scanned its surroundings, then found Leon next to its trunk. The reaction was instantaneous. Several roots shot out from the ground, lashing out towards Leon like sharp whips.
He dodged most of them and severed a few, constantly moving to avoid being locked down by several roots.
Clang!
Seeing that his spear failed to sever one of the roots, he frowned.
’Some roots possess the durability of a Tier Two equipment, huh?’
He didn’t like the new information, but there was nothing he could do about it. A quick step to his left helped him evade a sharp root that whistled past his ear, striking the ground behind him and shattering it.
Leon didn’t pause.
He teleported directly on the vast shadow of the tree, then struck at the trunk with his spear.
Crack!
A piece of bark splintered, but didn’t break off. Instead, it glowed briefly, then mended itself at a speed that rivaled Fel’s healing ability.
Leon’s gaze darkened. The roots made it hard for him to come close to the tree, and he couldn’t stay and attack the same spot repeatedly.
The moment his attack landed, he had already jumped back, avoiding a pincer attack that would have left several large holes in his body.
After suffering once from his attack, the tree’s guard shot up. Several roots rose up around the tree, not moving to attack him, but placed on standby for defense.
’What a mess,’ Leon grumbled and attacked again.
He leaped into the air, avoiding the roots below him, then landed closer to the tree. As soon as he did, he rolled away without even standing first.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Several sharp roots pierced into the ground where he had landed, shining with a metallic luster. Leon gave them a dry glance, then moved again.
The fight continued in an annoying stalemate.
Leon kept trying to get close to the tree, but it was exceptionally guarded by its roots, not even giving him the slightest chance. The roots couldn’t injure him either, as he was incredibly fast and could evade their attacks smoothly.
Still, his stamina was being consumed. Although monstrous for a Tier One like him, he didn’t believe he could outlast the Tree. Did it even possess something like stamina?
Leon didn’t know, and he wasn’t ready to test and find out. He needed to kill the mutated tree. After all, according to Agnus’s words, the mutated tree would devour the entire Marine Park.
He couldn’t allow that. It was on their route to Staten Island.
’What a ridiculously big tree. Is it a cursed offspring of the Elves World Tree or something? Ugh.’
He glanced at the tree with a hint of resentment as he flipped horizontally in the air, passing between two sharp roots that were meant to slice into him.
’And its shadow is damn large. Oh, wait...’
He cast a quick glance at the shadow, then lunged at it. Several roots followed him, but not all. Instead of moving close to the tree, he targeted the area of its shadow farthest from the tree trunk.
The tree seemed confused and only attacked with a few roots, giving Leon the chance to do what he was planning.
His black spear suddenly turned darker, and a black flame began to burn on it. He was momentarily astonished by the visual effect of the skill—Shadow Execution—applied on his weapon.
He didn’t linger on that for long, though. Zigzagging his way through the roots, he stopped at a comfortable position, then stabbed into the ground—precisely, the shadow.
As expected, the spear sank into the shadow as if it were a phantom object. The roots attacking him froze, and the tree shuddered.
There was an anguished groan as several leaves fell from the branches, scattering on the ground.
Leon felt the mutated tree recoil in agony, and he couldn’t help but be filled with dark joy. Just as he expected, there was no defense against that skill.
Pulling out the spear, he turned and stabbed into a different spot in the shadow. This time, the tree shook heavily, as if disturbed by a great wind.
Leon could almost hear it roaring in pain and rage. Several more leaves fell onto the ground, then lit up.
Leon was stunned, unable to understand what was happening. Why were the leaves shining like Christmas lights?
The enormous tree trembled violently. Hundreds of leaves withered at once. Then a voice, ancient and unbearably heavy, echoed inside Leon’s mind.
["Wretched... HUMAN...!"]
Leon staggered, falling on his knees as he felt like a thick log of wood had been smashed onto his head. His brain ached violently, and he couldn’t help but let out a groan.
His eyes widened in horror. ’The tree... it talks...’
Before he could gather his thoughts, he was attacked once again. This time, not by the roots, and not by the voice. Instead, it was the same mental pressure he had felt when he first looked at the tree.
That time, it had been bearable, because the tree was passive towards him. Now, however, it had turned its full focus on him.
The difference was vast. Leon’s mind went blank, and he felt like his brain had turned to mush.
His head was hot, pulsing, and heavy. His thoughts became fragmented, and he collapsed onto the ground. The pain was nothing physical that could be endured through sheer grit.
It was a pain that ravaged his mind. Leon almost broke into tears, his eyes wide and trembling.
’What... kind... of...’
His thoughts were incomplete, and his eyes lost focus. His body turned limp, and he fell unconscious.
However, the mental assault didn’t stop. The tree hadn’t received the message for killing him, so it didn’t stop.
It was hell-bent on eliminating this wretched human.
