The first controlled Bookmark assessment used a table made from stone, a pen with no removable parts, and seven people prepared to tackle Elias.
Mira counted them aloud.
"Achebe. Me. Lio. Two medical officers. One containment officer. One records technician."
"That is six."
"You count yourself."
"I’m honoured."
"You shouldn’t be."
Elias sat at the centre of the testing chamber wearing a replacement boundary splint. The new rods reached halfway to his knee because the Blank mark had migrated upward.
A sealed glass case stood beyond arm’s reach.
Inside lay the Sequel Clause.
The narrow black Bookmark remained dormant. Thirty-one ridges crossed the leather. The scale at its upper edge reflected no light.
Five reader traces hovered above the case.
Four remained still.
The fifth waited at Chapter Ten.
Toby’s voice came through a secure speaker in the wall.
He had not been permitted to attend physically.
"Please avoid turning the room into a dragon."
Achebe said, "Technical comments only."
"That was technical."
Priya watched from behind a second partition. Lio stood near her with the identity-anchor slate. Her presence had been requested because she knew the original manifestation.
Her total attention remained sealed.
She would observe with ordinary sight.
Elias looked at her.
Priya did not look back.
Mira placed one page on the stone table.
"This is not an invitation to continue the Story."
"I know."
"You may write one verified factual statement about Chapter Ten."
"I don’t remember Chapter Ten."
"That is part of the test."
"What happens if I’m wrong?"
Achebe answered. "We stop."
"Before or after the wall grows teeth?"
"Write slowly."
Elias picked up the pen.
The recorder above him activated.
The records technician said, "State the memory before writing."
Elias thought.
Chapter Ten.
Caelan had reached the western road.
Or perhaps that had been Nine.
Chapter Ten opened with rain.
No. Fourteen smelled like rain.
He remembered staring at Chapter Ten’s title for nearly an hour because it sounded better than the content.
"What was the title?" Mira asked.
Elias looked at her.
"Factual prompt," she said. "Not assistance."
"After the Gates."
The fifth reader moved.
Chapter Ten to Eleven.
Nobody had written anything.
Toby’s voice changed.
"It is listening."
Achebe said, "Or responding to accurate recognition."
The technician checked the trace.
"Movement confirmed after spoken title."
Elias placed the pen on the page.
He wrote:
Chapter Ten was titled After the Gates.
The sentence remained.
The Sequel Clause warmed.
No dragon appeared.
Medical recorded his pulse.
The black mark beneath Elias’s sternum tightened like a hand closing.
The fifth reader moved backward.
Eleven to Ten.
Mira leaned over the trace display.
"Why backward?"
Toby answered.
"It disagreed."
Elias looked at the sentence.
"That was the title."
"Are you sure?" Priya asked.
He turned toward her.
"Yes."
She did not accept confidence as evidence.
Elias searched the memory again.
The Chapter list on his old laptop.
Nine: The Western Road.
Ten: Before the Gates.
Eleven: After the Gates.
He had been wrong.
Elias crossed out After.
The pen stopped at the first stroke.
The testing page vibrated.
A line appeared above his handwriting.
Correction requested.
Achebe’s hand moved toward the physical staple bar.
Mira said, "Elias. Do not continue until instructed."
The fifth reader remained at Ten.
The sealed case clicked.
One ridge opened slightly.
A narrow image appeared inside the glass.
A road under black rain.
A city gate remained closed in the distance.
No people.
No dragon.
Only the scene as Elias had meant to write it.
The records technician whispered, "Reference image."
Toby said, "No."
Achebe looked at the speaker.
"Explain."
"That is not a reader opening the Chapter."
"What is it?"
"A comparison system."
The image remained still.
Elias looked at the wrong title on the page.
"The fifth trace is checking me."
"Yes," Toby said.
"Against what?"
"That is the question."
Mira kept one hand near Elias’s shoulder without touching him.
"Can he correct the sentence?"
Achebe looked at the containment officers.
"Physical readiness."
Both nodded.
"Proceed."
Elias wrote:
Before the Gates.
The wrong words faded.
The scene inside the glass sharpened.
The closed gate gained iron bands.
A torn banner moved in the rain.
The fifth reader advanced to Eleven.
The chamber stayed intact.
Everyone breathed again.
The records technician examined the display.
"Comparison accepted."
Elias looked at the case.
"Someone kept a copy."
Toby answered too quickly.
"Maybe."
"What else could compare the memory?"
"A salvage index. A claim record. A reading imprint. A partial structural scan."
"Which one?"
"I don’t know."
Elias looked at Achebe. "Can we ask it?"
"No."
"That seems unnecessarily passive."
"You have produced one correct title. That is the full approved test."
The page beneath Elias’s hand moved.
The inked title sank through the stone surface.
Containment officers stepped forward.
Mira gripped the back of Elias’s chair.
A second line printed beneath the table.
The records technician knelt to read it.
CLAIMANT VERIFICATION IN PROGRESS.
The fifth reader trace turned.
It did not move to Chapter Twelve.
It faced outward.
Toward Elias.
The Bookmark mark beneath his sternum burned.
The page printed another line.
CURRENT AUTHORIAL SAMPLE: INCOMPLETE.
Elias stared at it.
"Sample of what?"
Toby did not answer.
Priya stepped closer to her partition.
Her surname flickered on Lio’s slate.
Achebe said, "Terminate assessment."
The containment officer closed the stone page inside a metal sleeve.
The Sequel Clause case went dark.
The fifth trace remained turned toward Elias.
Mira unlocked the testing chair.
Elias did not stand.
He looked at the corrected title.
Before the Gates.
The hidden process had known his Chapter better than he did.
"Was the fifth reader ever a person?" he asked.
Achebe lifted the sealed page.
"Unknown."
Toby finally spoke.
His voice was low.
"A reader follows a Story because they want to know what happens."
The fifth trace pulsed once.
"A claimant reads to prove it belongs to them."
Elias looked at the Bookmark.
The trace was not turning lost pages for pleasure.
It had been comparing every Chapter against a record.
Checking the Story.
Checking Elias.
The final line appeared inside the sealed sleeve.
AUTHORIAL CLAIM: NOT YET ACCEPTED.
