Renji Okada.
The JW World Heavyweight Champion stood almost a full head taller, his wide, muscular frame filling space. He wasn’t wearing his wrestling pants and wasn’t carrying the world title across his waist or shoulders. He was dressed in a dark gray shirt and black track pants, his wrists still tightly bound in clean white athletic tape. A white towel was kept loosely around his neck, but his posture was taut.
Okada had clearly been watching the exact same feed.
The champion’s face, usually calm and fixed with supreme discipline, was darkened by simmering anger. A thin line of sweat glistened along his forehead from nothing other than a workout, and his chest rose and fell in deep, controlled breaths.
For a fraction of a second, the two men stood inches apart in the semi-darkness of the staging wing.
There wasn’t really history between them, nothing heavy and unspoken. They had never stood across the ring as opponents, but their paths had crossed indirectly through the collateral damage of the past few months. Billy Bones had used brass knuckles to try and steal a victory over Okada at StandOut, the exact same brother who had tried to end Jey’s career with a Mexican Destroyer on the very same canvas.
They were the two pillar faces of the promotion, operating in completely different orbits...one the stoic, undisputed king of the mountain, the other the fiery, masked symbol of a reborn legacy.
Neither man moved. Neither man spoke.
Okada’s dark eyes locked onto the covered eyes of Jey’s mask. He looked down at Jey’s street clothes, noting the plain T, the lack of knee pads, and the absence of any preparation. Then Okada looked past him, his gaze flicking toward the monitor hanging from the metal rigging above their heads.
On the screen, Sun and Moon abandoned their exit and returned to the ring to continue inflicting punishment.
Jasun was holding Tyler Briggs up by the hair. Moonie was standing on the second turnbuckle, playing to the furious crowd, raising two fingers in the air before preparing to drop another calculated blow onto the defenseless rookie.
A stage manager stepped between the two wrestlers, his eyes wide with panic. "Wait! Okada-san! Ray Jr! Your intervention isn’t part of the plan! The broadcast is closing out with the attack in ninety seconds! The GM did not authorize--"
Okada didn’t even look at the man again. He reached out with one massive hand, clamped his fingers around the stage manager’s shoulder, and effortlessly shoved the official three feet to the side, clearing the path to the curtain.
Okada ripped the white towel from around his neck and threw it onto the concrete floor.
He turned his head slightly, his eyes meeting Jey’s once more.
"You ready?" Okada asked, his voice a low baritone that barely rose above the noise of the arena.
Jey didn’t hesitate. "Let’s fucking go."
Okada didn’t offer a smile or a theatrical gesture. He reached out, grabbed the entrance curtain, and yanked it open with violent force.
They stepped through together.
The transition from the dim, cramped shadows of backstage to the blinding glare of the Grand Auditorium was instantly felt.
The arena’s overhead lighting blazed down, washing the steel entrance stage in brilliant, unforgiving white light. Below them, the vast bowl of the auditorium was a churning sea of fans, their faces illuminated by the flash of ring-side cameras and the glowing screens of raised phones. The ambient air was heavy with noise, and the raw electricity of a crowd that had reached its breaking point.
Down on the ramp, about twenty feet ahead of the staging area, Jasun and Moonie were done with round two of their assault, and casually making their exit, walking backward while focused on Briggs.
The Tag Team Champions were in no hurry.
Jasun was strutting backward with an obnoxious, slow-motion swagger, his neon yellow and black tassels swaying with every step, a cocky, toothy grin plastered across his face, unconcerned about his loss. Behind him, Moonie was dragging the dented steel folding chair by its backrest, the metal scraping deliberately against the steel grating of the ramp to draw more heat.
They were soaking in the chorus of boos raining down from the stands, laughing between themselves, completely satisfied with the violent statement they had just carved into Tyler Briggs.
Down in the ring, three ringside medical attendants and two junior referees were huddled over the rookie cruiserweight. Briggs was curled on the damp canvas, clutching his ribs, barely able to base up on his knees.
Then, someone in the lower stands noticed the top of the ramp.
A single, high-pitched shout cut through the boos. Then another. Then another...and just like that, within two seconds, the entire Grand Auditorium realized what were...who were standing at the entrance.
The explosion of noise was not your standard wrestling pop. It was a deafening, roof-rattling roar that hit the steel rafters like a concussive shockwave. The sound was so massive.
At the commentary desk, Braxton nearly swallowed his microphone.
[Braxton: Wait a minute! Look at the stage!]
[Tanaka: What?! The broadcast should be closing out soon!]
[Braxton: IT’S RAY JR! RAY JR IS BACK OUT HERE! BUT LOOK WHO IS STANDING RIGHT BESIDE HIM!]
[Tanaka: THAT’S THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION! RENJI OKADA!]
The cameras cut frantically from the ring to the top of the ramp, struggling to frame the visual.
Standing side by side under the blinding white spotlights were the two of the three most prominent figures in Japan Wrestling at the moment... excluding the women’s champion, Rika.
On the left stood Ray Jr, wearing his modernized blue and silver mask, dressed in street clothes, his fists clenched tightly at the sides of his dark jeans. His stance had the unmistakable posture of a fighter who had discarded all pretense of caution.
On the right stood Renji Okada, the undisputed JW World Heavyweight Champion. Standing tall, broad-shouldered, and menacing, his taped wrist gleaming under the lamps, his gaze fixed downward, surveying his mark.
They both didn’t play to the crowd this time. They only stood on the elevated stage, side by side, casting long, dark shadows down the length of the steel incline.
Halfway down the ramp, Jasun and Moonie froze.
The sudden shift in the crowd’s noise had hit the champions like a slap across the face. Jasun stopped mid-stride, his tassels shivering as his arrogant swagger evaporated in an instant. He turned his head slowly, looking back over his shoulder toward the stage.
Moonie stopped right beside him, the steel chair slipping an inch from his fingers, its legs clattering against the metal grating.
Jasun’s jaw dropped. The obnoxious smirk vanished, replaced by an expression of panic. His eyes darted from Ray Jr’s masked face to Okada’s towering frame, his brain struggling to process the impossible image.
Moonie took an involuntary step backward, instinctively raising the steel chair across his chest like a shield, but his hands were trembling against the cold metal. They were tag team specialists who preyed on isolation and numbers. They were not built to stand against the the most invincible man in the company and a rising star sharing the same patch of ground.
[Braxton: Look at the faces on Sun and Moon. They thought they had gotten away with it tonight!]
[Tanaka: They pushed too far, Braxton! They brutalized a rookie, and they just woke up the two biggest forces in this promotion!]
[Braxton: The champions are trapped! They have nowhere to go!]
The entire arena seemed to hold its breath. The thousands of people leaning forward in their seats, the noise tightening into a singular exclamation of anticipation. Security guards along the barricades backed away, knowing better than to step between the men on the ramp.
On the stage, Ray Jr turned his masked head an inch to the right.
Through the mesh he caught Okada’s profile.
Okada wasn’t blinking. He kept his eyes locked on Jasun, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles along his neck stood out like corded steel. Without looking away from their targets, the World Heavyweight Champion gave a single, curt, decisive nod.
Jey met the gesture, nodding back once.
No words. No hesitation.
In perfect unison, Ray Jr and Renji Okada exploded down the ramp. Their boots hammered against the steel grating in a rapid, thunderous cadence that echoed through the arena. They moved like a two-man wrecking crew, closing the twenty-foot gap in a terrifying flash of speed, descending upon the champions with unforgiving intent.
