Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 369: Satisfaction"Who are you calling a bad driver? You were the one behind me." Miles Mercer frowned at the boisterous woman. She was clearly the one who had gotten too close, yet here she was, playing the victim.
"I didn’t expect you to reverse! Don’t you even look behind you before you back up? If that had been a person, you would’ve killed them!"
Miles Mercer was speechless.
’This woman is impossible. There’s just no talking to her.’
Nina Scott couldn’t be bothered to talk to Miles Mercer, either. She just pulled out her phone and started to make a call. Miles looked at her. "What are you doing?"
"Calling the traffic police, of course. Oh, right, you’re a foreigner. You probably don’t understand the traffic laws in Calypsos."
"You’re calling the police over a minor fender-bender like this? Don’t you just want money? Fine, I’ll pay you," Miles said, starting to pull out his checkbook.
"Who wants your filthy money! Who are you trying to insult? Who do you think you’re looking down on?" Nina Scott wasn’t short on cash. ’This man is unbelievably arrogant,’ she thought.
"Then what do you want?" Miles Mercer stared at her.
"I..." Nina Scott was at a loss for words. She hadn’t really thought about it. In these situations, you either go through insurance or settle privately, but it usually just came down to money.
Since Miles Mercer had reversed into her, he was completely at fault.
So, what Miles Mercer was doing now wasn’t technically wrong.
’But why do his words and actions feel so damn insulting?’
Miles Mercer wrote a long string of zeros on a check and stuffed it into Nina Scott’s hand. "This is enough to buy ten of these crappy little cars."
It was true that Nina Scott’s car wasn’t a luxury brand. It had only cost two or three hundred thousand when she bought it—not particularly expensive.
"Anything else? If not, move your car. You’re blocking me, and I need to back out. And another thing—stop following me."
"Me, following you?" Nina Scott reacted as if she’d just heard the world’s biggest joke. She already found this Miles Mercer guy obnoxious, but now she realized he was completely detestable.
"Aren’t you?" ’How else could it be such a coincidence? She must have deliberately driven over here and parked behind me.’
"Are you delusional? You think you’re some kind of celebrity I’d bother following? And another thing, I don’t want your damn money." With that, Nina Scott tore the check to shreds and threw the pieces in Miles Mercer’s face.
Seeing the dark, livid expression on Miles Mercer’s face, Nina Scott felt one thing and one thing only: sweet, sweet satisfaction.
Then, Nina Scott pulled out her own checkbook, wrote a string of numbers, and threw the check right back in his face.
"You’re not the only one with money, and you don’t own this road. You can drive here, and so can I. By your logic, if anyone is near you, they must be following you? So when you go out to eat, is every single person in the restaurant following you, too? That’s completely ridiculous!"
Without giving Miles a chance to retaliate, Nina Scott finished her tirade, hopped back in her car, and instead of turning around to leave, she floored the accelerator and rammed right into his car.
The rear of Miles Mercer’s car now sported an even bigger dent, and the vehicle had been knocked forward about ten centimeters. Nina Scott had done it on purpose.
’I paid for it, so why can’t I give it a little bump?’ When she’d driven over, she had no idea Miles Mercer was in that car. She was here to see Ivy, not to follow him.
"You..." Watching her do that, Miles was absolutely furious.
’This woman... she actually used money to insult me.’
Miles Mercer watched as Nina Scott backed up and drove off around the other side. He gripped the check tightly in his hand.
’Fine. I’ll remember this woman.’
Nina Scott drove to the other side of the parking lot to park, then took the elevator upstairs to find Ivy Sherwood.
She knocked, and the door opened a moment later.
"Nina?"
"I’m so pissed! I’m absolutely furious," Nina Scott said, storming in.
Ivy Sherwood looked at her and quickly poured her a glass of water. "What’s wrong, Nina? What’s got you so worked up?"
"I ran into some jerk while I was parking. He backed into my car, but don’t worry, I gave him a piece of my mind. It was so satisfying," Nina Scott said without going into detail.
Ivy Sherwood knew Nina Scott’s fiery temper and was sure she wouldn’t let herself get the short end of the stick.
"Who hit you? Didn’t you call the police?"
"No. It was one of those two brothers from the Mercer family."
"Miles Mercer?" Ivy Sherwood asked in surprise. But thinking about the timing, Miles had just dropped her off, which would be right around when he could have run into Nina Scott.
"I guess so." Nina Scott didn’t actually know his name.
"You two certainly seem fated to meet," Ivy Sherwood said.
"Pah! What kind of fate is that? But why was he here? Was he looking for you?"
Ivy Sherwood nodded. "Didn’t I tell you they were looking for their paternal aunt? They thought I looked a little like her, so we went to the hospital for a DNA test. The results were negative—we’re not related at all. Coincidentally, I even met their grandfather when I was in Elandra before. The old man seems to miss his daughter dearly. It was quite sad to see."
"Well, that’s not surprising. It was a no-brainer that you weren’t related. You’ve lived in Lustre your whole life," Nina Scott reasoned.
"By the way, since you were at the hospital for the test, did you get yourself checked out? Is it what I think it is? Am I going to be a godmother?" Nina Scott asked, looking at Ivy Sherwood with anticipation.
Ivy Sherwood wasn’t sure if she should tell Nina about this.
She hesitated. Nina Scott was her best friend, and they had no secrets between them. Nina knew everything about her.
’But... this is something I want Quentin Blackwood to be the first to know.’
’After I tell Quentin, then I’ll tell Nina!’
"I got it checked. I just ate something that upset my stomach."
"Oh, I see. Well, that’s okay. You and Quentin Blackwood are still young. You have plenty of time!" Nina Scott said, patting Ivy Sherwood’s shoulder.
Ivy Sherwood didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. ’Why does Nina seem so disappointed?’
"So, Nina, what brings you here?"
"I was worried about you. You almost got into trouble last time you went to see Caleb Blackwood, so I just wanted to come by and see how you were doing."
"You’re the best, Nina!" Ivy Sherwood said, linking her arm with her friend’s. ’It’s so wonderful to have a friend like Nina Scott!’
...
「Aethelgard.」
At the Sheridan Group headquarters, Old Master Sheridan was already back to work every day, despite having only recently been discharged from the hospital.
Tonight, he had a dinner meeting scheduled with Quentin Blackwood.
Joy Sheridan walked into her grandfather’s office. "Grandpa, you have a dinner meeting with Quentin Blackwood tonight, right?"
Old Master Sheridan nodded. "I do. Why? Do you want to come along?"
"No, I have plans tonight with some friends, so I can’t. I was just wondering... after dinner tonight, could you give Quentin a ride home, Grandpa?"
"Why?" Old Master Sheridan found her request strange.
"No reason. I just figure that if you’re a little nicer to Quentin, he’ll be a little nicer to me."
"Joy..."
"I don’t want to hear it, I don’t want to hear it! I know what you’re going to say. Grandpa, if you really love me and want what’s best for me, you’ll help me get together with Quentin. I don’t want to listen to anything else. I’m leaving, Grandpa!" With that, Joy Sheridan hurried out of Old Master Sheridan’s office.
Joy Sheridan went to another office. It belonged to a Sheridan Group shareholder—the very one who coveted company shares and had conspired with her to poison her grandfather.
The moment she stepped inside, her entire demeanor changed.
"Is everything ready for tonight?"
The shareholder smiled. "Don’t worry, everything is guaranteed to go according to your wishes. But, Joy, don’t you feel the least bit guilty doing this? The old man has always been pretty good to you."
"Good to me? If he was really good to me, he would have helped me get together with Quentin ages ago. I can’t be bothered with all that. All I want is Quentin, and you don’t need to ask so many questions. We have a deal: as long as this succeeds, the Sheridan Group is yours. I won’t fight you for it."
