Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 401: Ivy Sherwood’s MiscarriageIvy Sherwood nodded. "I’ve decided!"
"Alright then, I’ll go with you tomorrow." Nina Scott moved closer to Ivy Sherwood. "There are plenty of fish in the sea. We can take our pick later. I actually thought Xavier Mercer wasn’t bad, you know? Tall and handsome. But it turns out you two are siblings. What a shame!"
"If you think Xavier is so great, you should go after him. I think my brother would be pretty easy to win over."
"Listen to you, ’my brother, my brother’ already. You’re already taking his side!"
"He *is* my brother. I’m not wrong for calling him that." Ivy Sherwood’s lips curved into a smile. ’I have a brother now, too!’
"Nah, I’ll pass. I think Xavier Mercer has a fiancée," Nina Scott said.
"How do you know that?" Ivy Sherwood wasn’t even very clear on the matter. ’I’ll have to ask about it another day.’
Nina Scott had forgotten where she’d heard it. "I think that narcissist, Miles Mercer, said it last time."
"Well, I’ll ask around for you another day. But even if my oldest brother has a fiancée, I still have two other brothers, Connor and Miles. You probably haven’t met Connor, but Miles is great too! He’s tall, handsome, witty, and charming. It would be even better if you could become my sister-in-law!"
At the mention of Miles Mercer, Nina Scott pouted. "Miles is a definite no-go. Witty and charming? He’s a straight-up megalomaniac! He thinks every woman in the world is in love with him. I’ve never seen such a narcissistic man. Ivy, your rose-colored glasses are way too thick. But it just goes to show we really are best friends—we both want the other to be our sister-in-law."
Ivy Sherwood said, "It’s not very likely I’ll become your sister-in-law, but there’s still a chance you could become mine."
"Why is it impossible? What if you discover how great my brother is one day?" Nina Scott still thought her brother was a pretty good guy; he and Ivy just weren’t fated to be together.
"Well, my brother Miles is great too. Why don’t you consider him?"
Nina Scott made a gagging face. "Let’s just drop this topic. We should get to sleep. I’m going to the hospital with you tomorrow!"
"But Ivy, are you sure you won’t regret this?" Nina Scott propped her head up and looked at Ivy Sherwood, worried she would have regrets.
It was clear that Ivy Sherwood hadn’t let go of Quentin Blackwood.
"I... probably won’t..." Ivy Sherwood lowered her gaze. In truth, she didn’t know either.
"Forget it, let’s not think about this. The point is, *we* won’t regret it. When Quentin Blackwood finds out, let *him* be the one to regret it!"
Perhaps because she had been so exhausted the past two days, Ivy Sherwood fell asleep especially early that night. And she had a dream.
In the dream, she was in a vast, white expanse with no end in sight, as if she were among the clouds.
She tried to figure out where she was and wanted to leave, but a small child suddenly tugged on the corner of her clothes, begging her not to go, not to leave him behind.
The child seemed very upset, but Ivy Sherwood couldn’t see his face clearly. Ivy even asked if he was lost and who he was looking for, offering to help him search.
But the little one said nothing, only holding tightly to her hand. Ivy Sherwood walked with him for a long time. Finally, Ivy saw a patch of darkness ahead. She told the child to wait there while she went to scout it out, promising to come back for him.
The little boy said in a sweet, childish voice, "You said you’d come back! You won’t abandon me! You have to remember!"
But when Ivy Sherwood went back, she couldn’t find the little boy anywhere. Ivy called out frantically as she searched, but there was no trace of him.
The next time Ivy Sherwood woke up, it was because Nina Scott was shaking her awake.
She woke with a start, her forehead covered in cold sweat.
"Ivy, what’s wrong? What did you dream about? You scared me to death, you know that? You kept muttering something, but I couldn’t make it out."
Ivy Sherwood looked at Nina Scott, her eyes filled with confusion.
"I think I was dreaming."
"And? What did you dream about? Was it a nightmare?"
Ivy Sherwood shook her head. She tried to recall it carefully, but she wasn’t sure what she had dreamed. The dream felt like a dense fog she couldn’t grasp or remember.
By then, Ivy Sherwood could see that the sky outside had already brightened. ’Is it time to get up?’
"I don’t really remember. Let’s just get up."
"Okay. What do you want for breakfast? I’ll go make it for you!"
Ivy Sherwood said, "I’m not very hungry. I don’t have an appetite."
"How can you not eat breakfast? Even if you don’t eat, what about the baby? You can’t let the baby go hungry. You wait here, I’ll go make something right now. I guarantee the baby will love it!"
Nina Scott headed into the kitchen. Watching her wonderful friend, Ivy Sherwood thought that whoever married Nina in the future would be incredibly lucky.
’Besides, who needs a man when you have a best friend like this!’
Nina Scott made breakfast. She and Ivy Sherwood ate a little, then went downstairs and headed to the hospital.
Nina Scott went to find a parking spot while Ivy Sherwood went ahead to register. Just as she finished, a little boy in a hospital gown with a shaved head bumped right into her.
Before Ivy Sherwood could react, the little boy said sweetly, "I’m sorry, miss. Here, have some candy!"
He opened his small hand, revealing two milk candies.
"Thank you, but I’m okay."
The little boy looked to be only four or five years old. ’I’m probably old enough to be his ’auntie’ by now.’
Just then, the little boy’s mother, a woman in her forties, came over. "I’m so sorry, so sorry. Bobby didn’t hurt you, did he?"
Ivy Sherwood shook her head. "No, he’s very cute."
The woman nodded, her eyes red as she wiped away a tear.
"Is he sick?" Ivy Sherwood looked at the boy’s mother and felt there was so much written on her face.
The boy’s mother nodded. "Yes. My husband and I struggled with infertility for a long time. We tried countless medicines and saw so many doctors, but nothing worked. We were about to give up. Then, when I was forty, we finally had him. We were so happy. We felt he was a treasure sent to us from heaven, so we named him Bobby."
"But when Bobby was three, he was diagnosed with a congenital disease. The treatment costs a lot of money, but we’d already used up all our savings. We even sold our house, but the money is still nowhere near enough. Bobby might not have much time left... but he’s still so optimistic. He doesn’t even know if... if he’ll have a tomorrow." As she spoke, the woman’s tears started falling again.
Seeing this, the little boy quickly hugged the woman. "Mommy, why are you crying again? Does something hurt? I’ll blow on it and make it better."
The woman comforted him, "Mommy’s not hurt. Mommy’s not hurt."
Maybe it was because she was pregnant herself, but Ivy Sherwood found the scene incredibly moving.
"Ivy, what are you doing? What are you looking at?" Nina Scott had already parked the car and come up beside Ivy Sherwood.
"Did you get registered?"
Ivy Sherwood nodded. "Yes."
Nina Scott said, "Let’s go up then. Ivy, don’t be scared. It’s going to hurt, but it’ll be over quickly. I’ll take good care of you this month."
Ivy Sherwood went to the obstetrics and gynecology department, but her mind was heavy with thoughts.
The examination was done quickly. All of Ivy Sherwood’s vitals were normal, and she was led into the operating room.
