Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 441: I Will Not Marry You"So you’re admitting it? The shooting was related to you, you arranged it, and you’re the one who orchestrated Old Master Sheridan’s death?"
Quentin Blackwood extracted the key information, his every word hammering down on Joy Sheridan. He was laying bare the very things she most wanted to escape, forcing her to face them.
Joy Sheridan shook her head, crying. "It wasn’t me, I didn’t..."
"Is there any point in denying it now? You can fool others, but don’t fool yourself."
Joy Sheridan wiped her tears. "Does that matter? It doesn’t matter. Quentin Blackwood, in front of my grandpa, do you think you’ve treated me fairly?"
"Do you have any idea what kind of life I’m living now? You clearly promised Grandpa you would take good care of me, but when those people treated me that way, you didn’t even come to see me once! How can you face my grandpa!"
Even now, Joy Sheridan was still blaming Quentin Blackwood for everything. She believed it was the whole world’s fault—anyone’s but hers.
"Adults should pay the price for their actions. You’re not the center of the universe, and the world doesn’t revolve around you. Everything happening to you now is what you deserve."
Quentin Blackwood felt not a shred of pity for Joy Sheridan. She was getting what she deserved.
"That’s not true! Grandpa said I was born a little princess, that my status meant I should have everything."
"But you’ve already killed your grandfather, all for your ridiculous, selfish desires."
"No, that’s not it..." Joy Sheridan tried to argue, but her words were utterly feeble, lacking any conviction.
"Since everything is clear now, let’s settle things between us, right here in front of your grandfather. When I promised Old Master Sheridan I would take care of you and marry you, it was because I thought you were truly alone and helpless, and because I felt he died because of me. But you—you just handed over everything he worked his life for to someone else."
"I have never liked you. I’ve never had the slightest feeling for you. I can’t lie to myself, and I can’t bring myself to marry you."
"My promise to marry you is now officially void. In its place, I will compensate you with money. You can name your price. But if you dare to cause trouble for Ivy Sherwood again, don’t blame me for being merciless."
"Quentin, don’t..." Joy Sheridan tried to embrace Quentin Blackwood, but he took a step back, and she lunged at empty air.
"Don’t do this to me. You’re all I have left. You’re really all I have..."
But Quentin Blackwood felt not an ounce of pity. Everything that had happened to Joy Sheridan was her own doing. You could say she was originally blessed by the heavens, but she’d played a perfect hand into a complete disaster.
"You can stay here and repent properly." Quentin Blackwood had no desire to even look at Joy Sheridan.
He truly couldn’t imagine what level of malice a person had to possess to personally kill their own grandfather.
He would make Joy Sheridan spend the rest of her life drowning in regret and misery.
Joy Sheridan tried to lunge after him, but Zane Linton and the others restrained her. "Miss Sheridan, President Blackwood said you are to repent properly here. So you’ll be kneeling here."
"Let me go! Don’t stop me! Quentin, you can’t do this to me! If you do this, I will never let Ivy Sherwood go!" Joy Sheridan shrieked and roared like a madwoman.
Zane Linton said, "Miss Sheridan, perhaps you should worry about yourself first."
Old Master Sheridan’s headstone was next to those of Joy Sheridan’s parents. Quentin Blackwood had buried the old master with his son and daughter-in-law, a family reunion of sorts.
Even now, Joy Sheridan still didn’t think she’d done anything wrong. ’What’s wrong with just loving Quentin Blackwood?’
As night fell, she felt only desolation and fear. When the wind picked up, it sounded as if ghosts were wailing all around her.
Joy Sheridan was terrified, but Quentin Blackwood’s men were watching her from the side, giving her no chance to escape.
Then, in the middle of the night, Joy Sheridan saw a white shadow floating in the air. It was...
"Grandpa," Joy Sheridan said, staring in terror at the figure in mid-air. She rubbed her eyes, thinking her vision was playing tricks on her.
"Joy... I loved you so much. Why did you kill me...?" the old master’s voice echoed.
Joy Sheridan scrambled to her knees on the ground. "Grandpa, I was wrong! I really know I was wrong! Please, don’t come for me! I’m your favorite granddaughter!"
"Why did you arrange the shooting? Why...?" The old master’s voice continued.
Joy Sheridan was already scared out of her wits. "I didn’t arrange it! It was Uncle Farmer!"
"Then why did you poison me?"
"I didn’t mean to do that either, Grandpa! I just wanted to make Quentin Blackwood come back! I never intended for anything to happen to you! It’s your fault for never agreeing to let me be with Quentin! I had no choice, Grandpa! Grandpa, please don’t blame me! I’ll buy more paper money tomorrow and burn it for you."
Terrified, Joy Sheridan confessed everything. The full course of events was now perfectly clear.
Not far away, Quentin Blackwood and Zane Linton stood watching.
"Did you get all that on tape?" Quentin Blackwood asked.
There was a hidden camera nearby, and it had recorded everything clearly.
The so-called ghost was just an image created by Quentin Blackwood using technology. A simple projection was all it took. Only because Joy Sheridan had a guilty conscience was she so afraid.
"Yes, it’s very clear. Miss Sheridan admitted everything herself."
Joy Sheridan was still on the ground, confessing her sins and begging her grandfather to let her go.
Quentin Blackwood nodded. "This is the evidence. File charges against that shareholder immediately for intentional homicide."
"And what about Miss Sheridan?" Zane Linton asked.
"Let her kneel here for three days. Then throw her back into the Sheridan Family home. Have people watch her. She’s not allowed to leave the house."
This was the last shred of mercy Quentin Blackwood would show Joy Sheridan, and only out of respect for Old Master Sheridan.
Quentin Blackwood looked at Zane Linton. "Give me your phone."
Although Zane Linton didn’t know what Quentin Blackwood was planning, he still handed his phone to his boss.
Quentin Blackwood opened Zane Linton’s WeChat, found Ivy Sherwood’s contact, and then opened her Moments feed.
Ivy Sherwood hadn’t posted anything new. Her last post was still the one wishing a Happy New Year.
Zane Linton, standing beside him, saw this and was speechless. "..."
’And here I was, wondering what the boss was up to. Turns out he just wanted to look at Miss Sherwood’s Moments feed.’
Quentin Blackwood returned to the car waiting outside. He picked up his phone and opened that photo of Ivy Sherwood again.
The person in the photo was smiling brightly. Her smile seemed to possess a kind of Magic Power, sweeping away all of Quentin Blackwood’s fatigue.
His hand gently caressed the screen, as if he were caressing Ivy Sherwood herself.
’I wonder what Ivy Sherwood is doing right now. She’s in Elandra, so it should be daytime there.’
’Did Ivy go out today? Who did she go with?’
Quentin Blackwood lit another cigarette and started smoking. His craving for nicotine had been strong lately. Quentin only smoked when he was stressed or in a foul mood.
But this time was different. This moment was the most relaxed he had felt in a long time.
