Yandere Monster Evolution: My Blind Wife Will Become a Demonic Queen
Chapter 154: Back"Drive us back to the eastern hub. Manager Vane is waiting."
The old driver didn’t ask a single question. He scrambled back into the front seat, stomped on the gas pedal, and turned the van around as fast as the tires would allow.
The ride back to the city was smooth and silent. The grey ruins and dead trees slowly faded away, replaced by streetlights, paved roads, and the familiar neon glow of the human district.
By 7:30 PM, the black van pulled up into the dark alley behind the crumbling auto repair shop.
Carmilla and I stepped out into the night air. She pulled her dark beanie low over her forehead and adjusted her oversized hoodie, hiding her high-tier mana once again until she felt like a completely average person standing beside me.
I raised my fist and knocked four times on the steel door.
CLANG. CLANG. CLANG... CLANG.
The square slot slid open. The same yellow-eyed guard peered out, his face turning pale the moment he saw our faces under the red strip light. Without saying a word, he unlocked the heavy bolts and let us inside.
We walked down the long, sloping concrete tunnel, the loud cheers and shouting from the underground arena growing louder as we approached the pit.
Inside the cavernous arena, the atmosphere was as rowdy as before. Mercenaries were drinking, shouting, and betting on two fighters inside the central iron cage.
But as Carmilla and I walked past the steel railings toward the back pillar, the hunters who recognized us immediately shut their mouths and stepped aside.
Word of our fourteen-second cage fight had already spread through the hub. Nobody wanted to mess with ’Ghost’ or ’Red’.
We stopped five feet away from the raised leather sofa near the back pillar.
Manager Vane was sitting in his expensive black suit, sipping dark amber liquid from a crystal glass. Beside him sat two new guards, but his sharp grey eyes locked onto us the second we stepped out of the shadow of the pillar.
Vane paused, his glass freezing halfway to his mouth. A rare look of genuine surprise flickered across his scar-lined face.
"You’re back," Vane said, his smooth voice dropping into a low, interested tone. "And it’s not even 8:00 PM."
"We don’t like wasting time," I said calmly.
I reached into my pants pocket, pulled out the pristine velvet box, and tossed it casually across the five-foot gap.
Vane caught the box smoothly in his left hand. He unlatched the gold clasp and lifted the lid.
The warm, blood-red glow of the Crimson Heart illuminated Vane’s face in the dim light of the arena. The dense, high-tier mana radiating from the silver dragon casing was unmistakable.
Vane stared at the relic for three long seconds. He ran his thumb over the intricate silver engravings on the dragon casing, a deep, impressed look settling over his eyes.
"Unbelievable," Vane murmured softly. He snapped the box shut, resting it on his knee as he looked back up at me. "The Blood-Seal lock was intact. How did a low-rank scout open a royal treasury chest without blowing the whole room to dust?"
"I told you before," I replied, keeping my hands inside my jacket pockets. "We get the job done. That’s the only stat that matters."
Vane let out a loud, genuine laugh—a sharp contrast to his usual cold demeanor. He motioned with his hand, and one of his guards immediately stepped forward carrying a heavy metal briefcase.
"Forty percent of the black-market value, as promised," Vane said, pointing to the briefcase. "Twenty million credits in untraceable bearer chips. The rest is deposited directly to your freelancer badge codes."
I stepped forward, taking the heavy briefcase from the guard. "Appreciated."
"And one more thing, Ghost," Vane added, leaning forward on his sofa. His grey eyes sharpened as he looked at both of us. "You survived Sector B-4 and retrieved a noble relic in under five hours. That earns you full access to my private enforcer board."
Vane pulled out a small silver memory drive from his pocket and tossed it to me.
"That drive contains high-tier contract listings from the central council," Vane explained. "Including active operational movements for senior enforcers like Black."
’Black...’
My heart gave a steady, cold thump inside my chest as my fingers closed around the cold silver drive. This was the real prize. This was the exact information I needed to track Black’s next moves and figure out what he was planning.
"Thank you, Manager Vane," I said, slipping the silver drive into my pocket beside my iron dagger.
"If you ever need more high-tier work, you know where to find me," Vane said, leaning back onto his sofa and taking a slow sip of his drink. "Don’t spend all that money in one place."
Carmilla and I turned around, walking away from the pillar and heading straight for the exit corridor.
We walked up the concrete tunnel, stepped out through the steel door, and finally left the dark alley of the eastern district behind us.
The cool night breeze of the city felt clean and refreshing against my face as I pulled off my black mask and took a deep breath.
"We got everything we came for," I smiled, looking down at the silver memory drive in my palm.
Carmilla pulled off her dark beanie, letting her dark hair fall softly over her shoulders in the moonlight. She looked at me with a warm, gentle expression.
"You played Vane very well, Woo Jin," Carmilla noted quietly. "He thinks you are just an ambitious mercenary looking for high payouts."
"That’s the best way to move in the shadows," I chuckled, hailing a green taxi along the main avenue. "Let them think you want money while you gather the truth."
We climbed into the back seat of the taxi and gave the driver our residential address.
As the car glided smoothly through the brightly lit city streets, Carmilla looked out the window at the glowing shop signs and peaceful crowds walking along the sidewalk.
The tired, heavy look that had been in her eyes this morning was completely gone, replaced by a quiet sense of accomplishment.
"Did coming back to a ruined province of your world bother you?" I asked softly, looking at her side profile.
Carmilla turned her head toward me, her dark red eyes shining in the soft light of the passing streetlamps. She shook her head gently.
"No," Carmilla replied softly. "For the last two years after Viora saved me, I thought everything from my past was just painful memory. But today... seeing my family’s relic help you get what you needed... it felt like my realm’s story wasn’t completely meaningless."
She reached over and lightly patted my knee with her gloved hand.
"Thank you for taking me with you, Woo Jin," Carmilla said warmly.
"Anytime, Carmilla," I smiled. "You’re a great bodyguard."
Carmilla let out a quiet, melodic laugh. "I expect a extra pastry for my service."
"Deal," I laughed back.
Thirty minutes later, the taxi dropped us off near the quiet residential street of the villa.
As we walked up the driveway toward the villa, I felt the heavy briefcase in my hand and the small, cool silver drive resting in my pocket.
"Quiet night," Carmilla murmured, her red eyes scanning the dim perimeter out of pure habit before her shoulders finally dropped in relaxation.
"Yeah," I replied softly. "The best kind."
I pushed open the heavy wooden door. The familiar, cozy scent of cinnamon, toasted bread, and rich savory stew hit us instantly, cutting through the lingering chill on our clothes.
Before I could even set the briefcase down on the entryway table, a blur of motion came rounding the corner from the hallway.
"Carmilla!"
Leo came skidding across the polished floorboards in his socks, nearly losing his balance before halting right in front of us.
Mia was right behind him.
"You were gone forever!" Leo declared, peering curiously at the metal briefcase in my hand. "Is that treasure?"
"Something like that," I chuckled, ruffling his messy hair. "More like the key to our next move."
"And pastries!" Mia added, her eyes locking onto the paper bag tucked under Carmilla’s arm. "You promised pastries!"
Kneeling down to their eye level, Carmilla handed the bag over to Mia. "A royal always keeps her promises, little one. Share those with Leo after dinner."
"Deal!" Mia giggled, grabbing her brother’s arm and dragging him back toward the kitchen like she had just secured a chest of gold.
I shook my head, smiling as they hurried off, before looking up toward the living room doorway.
Viora leaned against the frame, her dark purple hair tied up loosely. Her head turned unerringly toward us, taking in the rustle of our jackets, the rhythm of our breathing, and the quiet shift in the room’s energy.
"No burnt clothes, no broken bones," Viora stated in her calm, deadpan tone, though a faint curve lifted the corner of her lips.
"Yeah," I said, setting the briefcase on the table and pulling the silver drive from my pocket, letting the metallic glint catch the hallway light. "But we got what we went for. They gave us full access to the enforcer board, including Black’s movement logs."
Viora stayed quiet for a moment, her visor tilted slightly as if reading the air between us. "Then the real work begins tomorrow."
"Tomorrow," I agreed, walking over and resting a hand on her shoulder. "Tonight, we eat."
"Good," Viora said, turning toward the dining area. "Because if you two delayed dinner any longer, Leo was going to attempt cooking himself."
