I sat on the cold floor for a long time, holding Adrian’s body in my arms.

His skin was turning ice-cold. The dark crimson veins on his neck had completely vanished, leaving behind only the pale face of an exhausted, broken man. His blood soaked through my shirt, sticking the cloth to my skin.

Viora slowly limped over, her hand still pressed tightly against the deep gash across her stomach. Fresh blood leaked out between her fingers, dripping onto the splintered wood.

"We can’t stay here, Brian," Viora said softly. Her voice was weak, lacking its usual sharp energy. "The gate is becoming unstable. When Adrian’s monster core broke, it disrupted the spatial mana in this room."

I looked around the dark cavern.

She was right. The air was beginning to hum with a strange, high-pitched screech. The floating golden core of the Heart Tree was flickering violently. Dark purple cracks were spreading across its surface, leaking tiny sparks of raw, unfiltered mana into the air.

CRACK!

A stone pillar near the edge of the pit snapped in half, crashing down into the dark abyss below.

Elian stepped out from the shadowy tunnel, his white bow held loosely at his side. He looked down at Adrian’s body, then back toward the golden core. His long elf ears twitched as the cave shook again.

"The dungeon gate is reacting to the core’s corruption," Elian explained, pointing his fingers toward the glowing barrier at the far end of the platform. "The barrier is locked tight. In order to clear this rift and open the exit gate, we must cleanse the Heart Tree’s core."

I slowly stood up, carefully laying Adrian’s body down on a clean patch of stone away from the edge. I wiped the dark blood from my hands onto my pants.

"Cleanse it?" I asked, looking at the flickering golden sphere. "How do we do that? You said raw core mana is dangerous."

"It is dangerous for humans," Elian said, stepping closer to the edge of the wooden platform. "Our people, the Sun-Elves of Sylvoria, have guarded these trees for three thousand years. The Heart Tree is not just a source of power. It is the living memory of our ancestors."

Elian reached into his leather pouch and pulled out a small, silver dagger. The blade was thin, carved with delicate leaf patterns that glowed with a faint, warm sunlight.

"The dark drill explosion planted corrupted mana deep inside the core’s center," Elian continued. "If we leave it like this, the rift will collapse into a spatial storm. It will blow a hole straight into the lower city above us."

"And if we cleanse it?" Viora asked, holding her bleeding waist as she leaned against a stone pillar.

"If we cleanse it, the dungeon boss room will be marked as cleared," Elian said. "The gate will open, and the core will return to its peaceful state. But it requires blood from a true guardian to draw out the corruption."

Elian didn’t wait for us to answer. He raised the silver dagger and sliced it straight across his left palm.

SPLURT!

Bright, golden-colored blood welled up in his palm. It didn’t look like human blood. It smelled like fresh grass, rain, and blooming flowers.

Elian closed his eyes and began chanting in an ancient language. The strange words echoed smoothly off the rough stone walls of the cavern.

"O ancient roots of Sylvoria..." Elian whispered, his voice deep and solemn. "Hear the call of your child. Absorb the rot, wash away the dark, and return to the light."

He stepped forward and pressed his bloody palm directly onto the flickering golden core.

FLASH!

A blinding wave of warm, golden light exploded outward from the sphere.

The dark purple cracks on the core’s surface began to burn violently. Black, tar-like smoke poured out of the golden shell, hissing like angry snakes as it hit the air.

HISSSSS.

The dark smoke twisted together, forming the shadowy shape of a wild, three-headed wolf in mid-air above our heads.

"It’s the residual boss signature!" Viora shouted, raising her fists as a faint purple aura flickered back around her arms. "The corruption is fighting back!"

The shadow wolf let out a silent, terrifying roar. It dived straight down from the ceiling, aiming its sharp shadow fangs directly at Elian’s exposed back.

"Elian, look out!" I yelled.

I didn’t think twice. I pushed off my good leg, ignoring the sharp pain in my sliced thigh, and lunged forward through the air.

I gripped my iron dagger with both hands, channeling every last drop of my stamina into the metal blade.

SWOOSH!

I swung my blade upward in a wide, sweeping arc, cutting straight through the shadowy monster’s neck.

SLASH!

The iron dagger bit into the dense shadow mana. The shadow wolf shrieked in agony as my blade severed its central head, scattering its dark form into tiny black embers that dissolved into the dirt.

I landed heavily on my knees beside Elian, coughing up a small bit of dark blood. My chest felt like it was on fire, but I kept my dagger raised, ready for another attack.

"Thank you, human," Elian muttered quietly, his eyes still closed tightly as he kept his bloody hand glued to the golden core. "Hold the line for five more seconds!"

The remaining two shadowy heads of the corrupted mana reformed in the air. They screeched angrily, spinning around to charge straight toward my chest.

"Get behind me!" Viora’s voice echoed loudly.

She leaped over my head, her body twirling in mid-air like a dark purple wind. She drove a heavy, downward heel-kick straight through the center of the dark shadow mass.

BOOM!

Her purple-infused boot smashed the shadow mana directly into the wooden floor, shattering the dark beast into completely harmless dust.

At that exact moment, Elian finished his ancient elf chant.

DING!

A massive wave of pure, golden energy burst out from the Heart Tree’s core, washing over the entire cavern. The ice-cold air instantly turned warm and gentle. The rotten smell of dark mana vanished, replaced by the sweet scent of forest flowers and fresh spring water.

The golden core stopped shaking. It floated calmly in the air, glowing with a soft, peaceful sunlight that lit up every dark corner of the underground cave.

Above the platform, the giant iron gate began to rumble loudly.

RUMBLE-RUMBLE!

The heavy stone gears turned, and the massive iron doors slowly swung open, revealing a bright white portal of light leading back to the real world.

A series of bright blue system windows popped up right in front of my eyes.

DING!

[DUNGEON BOSS: CORRUPTED HEART CORE CLEARED!]

[DUNGEON GRADE: C-RANK RIFT (SYLVORIA ROOTS)]

[CLEAR CONDITION MET: CORRUPTION PURIFIED]

[EXP AND CLEAR REWARDS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED UPON EXIT]

It was finally over. The Gate was cleared.

Elian slowly pulled his hand back from the core. His left palm was pale, and he looked thoroughly exhausted, but his white bow was secured back over his shoulder. He turned his head toward the glowing golden core, bowing deeply with his hand pressed over his chest.

"The roots are at peace again," Elian said softly. "The forest of Sylvoria thanks you both."

"We just did what we had to do," I said, wiping my forehead with my dirty sleeve.

Elian walked over to the golden core. He reached out with both hands and gently took the floating sphere out of the air. The golden light softened even more, shrinking down until it was the size of a small glass marble.

He walked over to me and held his hand out, holding the tiny golden marble toward my face.

"Take this," Elian said.

I blinked, looking at his open palm in confusion. "What is this?"

"This is a condensed tear of the Heart Tree," Elian explained quietly. "It is not the raw, unstable core mana that Adrian tried to steal. It is pure, purified life-essence, given freely by the tree after its cleansing."

I stared at the tiny golden marble. "Pure life-essence...?"

"It cannot cure every disease in the world," Elian continued, his blue eyes calm and serious. "But it is completely gentle. It can repair broken mana channels and preserve a fading soul without burning the body."

My hands shook slightly as I looked down at the golden light.

Adrian’s last words echoed inside my mind again.

Don’t let her die alone in that dark room... She’s scared of the dark...

"This can save Yuna," I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.

"It can give her a fighting chance," Elian agreed, nodding his head once. "Consider it a gift from the Sun-Elves to a father who lost his way."

I took the tiny golden tear carefully, wrapping it inside a clean piece of cloth before putting it deep inside my inner jacket pocket. I zipped the pocket shut tightly, making sure it was completely secure.

"Thank you, Elian," I said, looking straight into his eyes.

Elian bowed his head slightly. "May the light guide your steps, Brian. Our paths may cross again in the upper realms."

Without another word, Elian turned around and walked toward the back of the cavern, dissolving smoothly into the shadows of the ancient forest roots. He belonged to this realm, and his duty here was finished.

Viora walked over to my side, her boots making soft tapping sounds on the stone floor. She looked at the giant white exit portal glowing near the iron gate.

"Can you walk?" Viora asked, her paper bag mask tilting down toward my bleeding leg.

"I can walk," I said, gritting my teeth as I pushed myself up from the ground.

I walked over to Adrian’s cold body. I reached down and lifted him up into my arms once again, carrying his heavy weight against my chest. His head rested quietly against my shoulder, his face completely peaceful under the soft golden light of the cave.

Viora stepped up beside me, holding her bleeding waist with one hand while placing her other hand on my arm to support my weight.

Together, we slowly walked across the ruined wooden platform. We passed the broken supply crates, the fallen mercenaries, and the shattered stone blocks.

We stepped up to the edge of the bright white portal.

I turned my head and looked back at the dark cavern one last time. The Heart Tree was glowing quietly in the distance, casting long, peaceful shadows across the ancient stone walls.

"Let’s go home, Adrian," I whispered softly.

We stepped directly into the blinding white light of the exit gate.
