Kai ran.
The apartment door slammed against the wall as he burst inside the building.
The sound echoed through the lobby, drawing startled looks from a few residents, but he barely noticed them.
His mind was focused on only one thing.
Noah.
The little girl’s words repeated endlessly inside his head.
The story remembers abandoned characters.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
Every heartbeat sounded too loud.
He took the stairs three at a time.
Behind him, Daniel shouted something.
Luna called his name.
Neither of them mattered right now.
Only Noah.
Only the scream.
The seventh floor finally came into view.
Kai rounded the corner so quickly he nearly slipped.
The hallway stretched before him.
Silent.
Still.
Wrong.
The lights overhead flickered once.
Then steadied.
Apartment 7B stood open.
The new nameplate hadn’t even been installed yet.
It looked unfinished.
Temporary.
Like the apartment itself wasn’t certain it belonged here.
"Noah!"
Kai’s voice echoed down the hallway.
No answer.
A cold knot formed in his stomach.
He crossed the distance in seconds and stepped inside.
The apartment was nearly empty.
Three moving boxes.
A folded mattress against the wall.
A duffel bag.
Nothing else.
No decorations.
No photographs.
No signs of a life being built.
It looked less like a home and more like someone pretending to have one.
"...Noah?"
Silence.
Then—
"Kitchen."
The voice was weak.
Strained.
Kai rushed toward it.
Noah sat on the floor beside the cabinets.
His back pressed against them.
His breathing came in shallow, uneven breaths.
One hand clutched his chest.
The other covered his left eye.
Kai dropped beside him immediately.
"What happened?"
Noah slowly lowered his hand.
His eye appeared normal.
But his fingertips—
Black ink stained them.
Not blood.
Not paint.
Ink.
Thick black droplets slid down his skin and hit the floor before dissolving into nothing.
As though reality itself refused to let them remain.
Kai’s expression tightened.
"What is that?"
Noah stared at his hand.
Then laughed softly.
A tired laugh.
"I..."
He struggled for breath.
"...remembered."
Kai frowned.
"Remembered what?"
Noah looked at him.
Everything.
The single word sent a chill through the room.
Daniel and Luna arrived seconds later.
Daniel nearly crashed into the counter.
"Damn."
His eyes widened.
"What happened?"
"I don’t know."
Kai answered honestly.
Luna immediately knelt beside Noah.
"Can you hear me?"
Noah nodded.
She grabbed his wrist.
A second later, concern crossed her face.
"He’s freezing."
Kai noticed it too.
Noah’s skin felt ice cold.
Not cool.
Not chilled.
Cold.
Like something that had spent years trapped somewhere sunlight couldn’t reach.
Despite the summer heat.
Despite the warm apartment.
Noah looked like someone fading from existence.
Like an old photograph left in the rain.
Noah suddenly laughed again.
The sound made everyone uncomfortable.
Not because it was threatening.
Because it sounded like someone who had finally solved a terrible mystery.
"...I knew it."
Kai leaned closer.
"Knew what?"
Noah looked directly at him.
"I’m not a neighbor."
Silence.
The room seemed to hold its breath.
"I’m..."
His voice faltered.
"...an edit."
The word felt wrong.
Not strange.
Wrong.
Like reality itself disliked hearing it spoken aloud.
Kai felt the ink beneath his skin shift.
Just slightly.
"Explain."
Noah closed his eyes.
"When you ended the story..."
His breathing steadied.
"When everything changed..."
"There were pages that no longer belonged anywhere."
Nobody interrupted.
"They couldn’t disappear."
His smile turned bitter.
"The story had already imagined them."
"So..."
He laughed softly.
"...they became people."
Luna stared.
Daniel blinked several times.
Nobody knew what to say.
Noah continued.
"I’m not from another city."
"I’m not from another country."
"I’m..."
His voice dropped lower.
"...from Chapter Thirty-Two."
Kai froze.
Noah nodded.
As if confirming his own words.
"I existed once."
"For a few paragraphs."
"One conversation."
"One scene."
"Then I was removed."
Daniel shook his head.
"That’s impossible."
Noah smiled sadly.
"Yeah."
"That’s what I thought too."
He looked around the apartment.
"The problem is..."
"Stories remember."
The room fell silent.
Kai suddenly understood the little girl.
The first character that was never supposed to exist.
She hadn’t meant a fictional character.
She meant people like Noah.
People who had been abandoned.
Forgotten.
Cut away before their lives could begin.
Noah grabbed Kai’s wrist.
His grip was surprisingly strong.
"You have the pen."
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
"Good."
Noah’s expression darkened.
"You’ll need it."
Kai frowned.
"For what?"
Noah looked directly into his eyes.
"They’re waking up."
A chill swept through the apartment.
"Who?"
"The others."
"What others?"
Noah smiled sadly.
"The ones who never got a chance."
"The ones nobody remembers."
"The ones erased before they could become real."
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every moving box in the apartment exploded open simultaneously.
Clothes scattered.
Books tumbled across the floor.
Kitchen utensils rolled across the tiles.
Daniel jumped backward.
"What the hell?"
One cardboard box landed upside down.
Written across its bottom in thick black marker were four words.
Property of Chapter 18
Silence.
Another box tipped over.
Removed During Revision
Then another.
Unused Dialogue
Another.
Alternate Ending
The apartment suddenly felt less like a home and more like an archive.
A graveyard.
A storage room filled with discarded possibilities.
Luna whispered,
"...This apartment."
Kai finished the thought.
"...is full of things that were erased."
Noah slowly stood.
His legs trembled.
But he remained upright.
He walked toward the largest unopened box in the room.
Placed one hand on top of it.
Then looked back at Kai.
"They’re scared."
Kai frowned.
"Who’s scared?"
"The abandoned ones."
His smile faded.
"They think you’ll erase them again."
Kai answered immediately.
"I won’t."
No hesitation.
No doubt.
Just certainty.
Noah nodded.
"I know."
His eyes drifted toward the box.
"But they don’t."
Slowly—
He opened it.
Inside were hundreds of handwritten pages.
No furniture.
No belongings.
Only stories.
Thousands of them.
Lives.
Names.
Conversations.
Entire people reduced to notes.
Kai picked up the first sheet.
Chapter 18 — The Boy Who Loved Astronomy
Below it:
Deleted before publication.
Another page.
Chapter 41 — The Woman Who Waited Every Tuesday
Removed for pacing.
Another.
Chapter 63 — Daniel’s Little Sister
Never introduced.
Kai’s grip tightened.
Hundreds.
Maybe thousands.
Lives that never got the chance to happen.
Dreams that ended before they began.
A small laugh echoed from the hallway.
The little girl stood outside Apartment 7B.
Watching.
Waiting.
She didn’t enter.
She simply observed.
As though she already knew how this moment would unfold.
Kai looked at her.
"...You knew."
She nodded.
"I remember everyone."
The words hit harder than any revelation.
Everyone.
Not the heroes.
Not the important people.
Everyone.
Kai looked down at the pages.
At the forgotten names.
At the erased lives.
"They deserve to exist."
The little girl smiled.
"Yes."
Kai reached into his pocket.
The silver fountain pen rested there.
For the first time since receiving it...
It felt heavy.
Not because of power.
Because of responsibility.
The little girl met his gaze.
Then quietly asked,
"If you can only save one story..."
She paused.
Her smile vanished.
"...how do you choose?"
