The knock came again.
It was steady, patient, and perfectly measured, arriving every three seconds without fail. It didn’t sound threatening. There was no urgency behind it, no violence, no hidden malice. Whoever stood outside Apartment 7B wasn’t trying to force their way in.
They expected the door to be opened.
Kai glanced toward the little girl. She had gone unusually quiet, her fingers tightening around the red crayon tucked behind her ear.
"You know who’s there."
She nodded once.
"I do."
"Who?"
For a moment, she hesitated. Then she lowered her gaze.
"...I don’t think he’ll like me telling you."
Kai let out a tired sigh.
"I’ve heard that sentence way too many times."
"This one’s different."
"How?"
She looked up, meeting his eyes with a seriousness that seemed far older than her appearance.
"Because this time..." she said softly, "...it’s his secret."
Before Kai could ask another question, Noah started toward the door. Kai immediately raised a hand.
"I’ll do it."
Noah stopped and nodded, stepping aside.
The apartment fell silent. Even Daniel, who always seemed capable of finding a joke in any situation, said nothing.
Kai approached the door and wrapped his hand around the handle.
The metal felt cold.
He waited.
Nothing happened.
No visions flashed through his mind. No whispers echoed in his ears. No invisible force warned him to stop.
Just silence.
Slowly, he turned the handle and opened the door.
A young man stood in the hallway.
He looked to be around Kai’s age, dressed in a black hoodie and dark jeans. A worn duffel bag hung from one shoulder. His brown hair was messy, his amber eyes slightly tired. At first glance, there was absolutely nothing remarkable about him.
Then he smiled.
"Wrong apartment."
Kai blinked.
"...What?"
The stranger glanced at the apartment number beside the door and scratched the back of his head.
"Ah. That explains it."
"What does?"
"I was looking for 7C."
Kai felt his heartbeat stumble.
"Why?"
The stranger laughed awkwardly.
"My landlord said someone there could answer a question for me. Honestly, I thought he was messing with me."
Kai studied him carefully.
"...What question?"
The smile slowly faded from the young man’s face. His expression became serious, almost troubled.
"...Have you ever felt like your life suddenly stopped making sense?"
The apartment became completely still.
Daniel slowly lowered his coffee cup.
Luna looked between the stranger and Kai.
Noah didn’t move at all.
Behind them, the little girl whispered quietly.
"...See?"
Kai swallowed.
"...Come in."
The stranger stepped inside and immediately looked uncomfortable, as though he regretted accepting the invitation.
"I should probably introduce myself."
He extended his hand.
"My name’s Adrian."
Kai shook it.
The handshake felt normal.
Warm.
Solid.
Human.
No visions.
Again.
Yet the instant their hands separated, both of them froze.
Not because of magic.
Because they spoke at the exact same moment.
"You—"
"...look familiar."
The sentence emerged from both of them simultaneously.
Silence followed.
Neither laughed.
Neither smiled.
Eventually Adrian rubbed his forehead.
"Weird."
Kai nodded.
"Very."
A few minutes later, everyone had gathered around the kitchen table. It felt strangely ordinary considering everything that had happened recently. Friends, coffee, moving boxes, and an unexpected visitor.
Then Adrian spoke.
"I’ve been having dreams."
Kai remained silent, allowing him to continue.
"The same dream. Every night."
He looked embarrassed.
"I know how crazy this sounds."
"You have no idea," Daniel muttered under his breath.
Adrian continued anyway.
"I keep walking through a city where everyone knows me. People smile when they see me. They wave. They call my name."
His expression darkened.
"The problem is..." He paused. "...I don’t know what my name is."
Luna frowned.
"You just said your name was Adrian."
"It is."
He hesitated.
"I think."
Nobody spoke.
Adrian stared down at the table.
"Every morning, when I wake up, there’s this moment... maybe a few seconds..."
His voice became quieter.
"...where I completely forget who I am."
A familiar chill ran through Kai.
Memory.
Identity.
Stories.
The same themes kept appearing no matter how much he tried to leave them behind.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed movement.
The little girl had slipped into the kitchen without anyone noticing. She stood behind Adrian’s chair, watching him closely.
Not with fear.
With pity.
Her eyes met Kai’s.
She silently mouthed two words.
Not yours.
Kai frowned.
Not my story?
The thought lingered as he turned back toward Adrian.
"What do you do?"
Adrian blinked.
"Hm?"
"For work."
The question should have been simple.
Instead, Adrian froze.
His mouth opened.
Then closed.
He stared at the table.
"I..."
Nothing came out.
His breathing became uneven.
"I have keys."
He quickly reached into his pocket and produced a ring of house keys.
"I have a wallet."
A driver’s license, credit cards, and cash followed.
Everything looked real.
Everything looked normal.
"I have an apartment," he whispered. "I have clothes. I have memories."
His hands began shaking.
"...So why can’t I remember living any of them?"
No one answered.
Because no one could.
The silence stretched until Noah slowly rose from his chair.
Without a word, he walked over to Adrian and studied him carefully. Then he gently placed two fingers against Adrian’s forehead.
Nothing happened.
At least, nothing visible.
Yet Noah suddenly staggered backward as though he’d been struck.
His face went completely white.
"...Impossible."
Kai immediately caught him before he could fall.
"What?"
Noah stared at Adrian.
His voice barely worked.
"He isn’t edited."
Kai frowned.
"Then what is he?"
For the first time since they’d met him, Noah looked genuinely terrified.
"He hasn’t been written."
The room fell silent.
Even the little girl looked shocked.
Across the table, Adrian stared at them in confusion.
"...Should I be worried?"
Nobody answered.
Noah swallowed hard.
"There are abandoned characters," he said quietly. "There are rewritten characters. There are forgotten narrators."
His gaze locked onto Adrian.
"But I’ve never met someone who exists before their first sentence."
At that exact moment, Kai’s fountain pen rolled across the table by itself.
Everyone watched in silence.
The silver pen came to a stop directly in front of Adrian.
Its nib pointed toward him.
Then, without a single hand touching it, black ink began to spread across the wooden table.
Five words appeared.
Protagonist not yet assigned.
Kai’s blood turned cold.
Across the room, the little girl took an involuntary step backward.
For the first time since he’d met her, she looked afraid.
Truly afraid.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"...The blank stories have started choosing."
