Kai didn’t answer immediately.
Adrian stood at the edge of the platform, his hands hanging loosely at his sides, staring at the Choice Line as though it should reveal something to him.
Everyone else had someone.
A mother.
A brother.
A child.
A lover.
A friend.
Even Noah, who couldn’t remember whether his sister had ever existed, had been given someone to miss.
But Adrian had nothing.
No familiar voice whispered his name from the darkness.
No invisible hand reached toward him.
No forgotten face waited beyond the rails.
The Choice Line had offered everyone a door.
Except him.
And somehow...
That was worse.
"I don’t understand," Adrian whispered.
Kai stepped closer.
"What don’t you understand?"
Adrian swallowed hard.
"Why doesn’t anyone remember me?"
The question was so simple that it hurt.
Kai looked at him carefully.
"Maybe they do."
Adrian shook his head.
"No."
"You don’t know that."
"I do."
For the first time, Adrian looked directly at him.
"When I close my eyes, I can remember everyone’s face."
His gaze moved between them.
"You."
"Luna."
"Daniel."
"Noah."
His voice grew quieter.
"But when I try to remember someone who knew me before..."
He hesitated.
"...there’s nothing."
Not a face.
Not a voice.
Not even a name.
Only darkness.
A blank space where an entire life should have been.
"I don’t think I was ever important to anyone."
Kai’s expression hardened instantly.
"Don’t say that."
"Why?"
"Because it’s not true."
Adrian let out a bitter laugh.
"How do you know?"
Kai opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Because he didn’t know.
That was the problem.
He couldn’t prove Adrian had existed before they met.
He couldn’t prove Adrian had a childhood.
Couldn’t prove someone had once held his hand, celebrated his birthday, or worried when he was late coming home.
He couldn’t prove any of it.
But neither could he accept the alternative.
Kai stepped forward until they stood face-to-face.
"I know because you’re here."
Adrian blinked.
"What?"
"You’re here."
Kai’s voice remained steady.
"You laugh."
"You worry."
"You get scared."
"You make choices."
He gestured toward the others.
"And you’ve already changed people’s lives."
Adrian stared at him.
"So what?"
Kai smiled faintly.
"That’s enough."
For several seconds, Adrian said nothing.
Then, slowly, he smiled.
It wasn’t a happy smile.
But it was real.
"...Thank you."
Behind them, the conductor watched in silence.
Across the tracks, the stranger standing beside the pale train looked toward Adrian with an expression Kai couldn’t understand.
It looked like pity.
And recognition.
At the same time.
Kai noticed immediately.
"You know something."
The stranger remained silent.
"You know why nobody is waiting for him."
Still nothing.
Kai’s voice sharpened.
"Tell me."
The stranger finally met his gaze.
"Because there is nobody behind him."
Kai frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The stranger’s eyes drifted toward the Choice Line.
"It means..."
His voice was quiet.
"...Adrian has no past."
The words landed like a hammer.
Adrian’s face went blank.
"No."
The stranger continued.
"He isn’t someone who lost his memories."
"He isn’t someone who was forgotten."
"He isn’t someone whose story was erased."
His gaze settled on Adrian.
"His story simply hasn’t begun."
Silence.
Adrian stared at him.
"So I’m..."
The stranger nodded.
"Unwritten."
The word echoed across Platform Zero.
Adrian looked down at his hands.
His fingers trembled.
"I thought..."
His throat tightened.
"I thought maybe there was something wrong with me."
"There is."
The stranger said it without cruelty.
"There is something wrong."
Kai’s eyes narrowed.
"Watch your words."
The stranger ignored him.
"But it isn’t that you don’t have a past."
His gaze never left Adrian.
"It’s that you were never supposed to need one."
Adrian slowly looked up.
"What?"
"You were created for a future."
Not a past.
Not a history.
A future.
"Someone designed you to become something."
The stranger’s expression darkened.
"But they never decided what."
A sharp metallic click echoed from the Choice Line.
Everyone turned.
The rails had begun to glow.
Not brightly.
Just enough to make the engraved words visible.
Kai stepped closer.
His stomach tightened.
He recognized the handwriting immediately.
The same elegant script that had appeared on the passenger manifest.
Letters formed slowly across the shining steel.
ADRIAN
Beneath it, another line appeared.
DESTINATION: UNKNOWN
Then a third.
STATUS: WAITING
The final word settled into place.
The station seemed to hold its breath.
The conductor whispered,
"No."
The stranger’s face had gone pale.
"That’s impossible."
Kai looked at him.
"You keep saying that."
The stranger didn’t smile.
"Because it keeps becoming true."
Adrian took a step toward the tracks.
Kai immediately grabbed his shoulder.
"Don’t."
Adrian stopped.
"Why?"
"Because we don’t know what happens if you touch it."
His eyes remained fixed on the glowing words.
"What if that’s what I’m supposed to do?"
"Then we’ll figure it out another way."
Kai tightened his grip.
"I’m not letting you walk into something that feeds on people."
Adrian gave him a faint smile.
"You really don’t trust anything."
"No."
Kai glanced at the rails.
"Not anymore."
Daniel stepped beside them.
"Good."
Luna joined them.
"Very good."
Noah moved to Adrian’s other side.
"You don’t go alone."
Adrian’s eyes shifted from one face to another.
Something inside him cracked.
Not dramatically.
Just enough for the loneliness underneath to show.
For the first time...
He looked like someone who believed he might actually belong somewhere.
Then the Choice Line moved.
Not physically.
A memory erupted from it.
The station vanished.
Kai blinked.
Suddenly, he was standing inside a kitchen.
A small kitchen.
Warm yellow lights.
Rain tapping softly against the windows.
The smell of food lingered in the air.
A woman stood at the stove.
A man sat at the table reading a newspaper.
Somewhere nearby, a child laughed.
Kai’s chest tightened painfully.
He knew this place.
He didn’t know how.
But he knew it.
The woman turned.
"Kai?"
Everything inside him froze.
Her face was blurry.
Impossible to focus on.
Yet he knew that voice.
His mother.
"Kai, dinner’s ready."
His eyes burned.
He took one step forward.
Then another.
"Mom..."
She smiled.
"You’ll be late."
Something felt wrong.
Terribly wrong.
The scene was too perfect.
Too quiet.
There was no clatter of dishes.
No television in the background.
No footsteps.
Only her voice.
And the rain.
Then she spoke again.
And Kai’s blood ran cold.
"You should bring Adrian with you."
He froze.
The kitchen vanished.
Kai stumbled backward.
The station returned.
The rails.
The trains.
The crowd.
Platform Zero.
Luna immediately grabbed his arm.
"Kai!"
He looked at her, breathing hard.
"What?"
Her face was pale.
"For a second..."
She swallowed.
"...you weren’t here."
Kai turned slowly toward the Choice Line.
The glowing letters had changed.
His stomach dropped.
KAI MERCER
His name now appeared beside Adrian’s.
Written in the same elegant hand.
Below them, a new line formed.
COMPATIBLE
The conductor’s face drained of color.
"No."
Kai stared at the word.
"What does that mean?"
The conductor stepped forward.
For the first time since arriving at the station, genuine fear filled his eyes.
"It means the line has stopped choosing passengers."
He looked directly at Kai.
"It has begun choosing stories."
The stranger’s expression darkened.
"And yours..."
His gaze shifted toward the darkness beyond the rails.
Toward something unseen waiting beyond the station.
"...is the first one it wants to rewrite."
