The pen moved by itself. Kai stood frozen as black ink crawled across the white page. Neither he nor Adrian touched it, yet the nib continued scratching across the paper with calm, deliberate certainty. The sound was strangely peaceful as words slowly formed beneath it.
THE STORY CANNOT CONTINUE WITHOUT A WRITER.
Kai felt his stomach tighten. "No."
The pen stopped, and for a moment the room became perfectly still. Then fresh words appeared.
YOU STARTED IT.
Kai looked around the endless white room. "That doesn’t mean I have to finish it."
The answer came immediately.
NO. BUT SOMEONE DOES.
Kai clenched his fists. "Then find someone else."
This time the pen remained motionless. Several seconds passed before a bitter laugh escaped him. "That’s what I thought."
He turned toward Adrian, who stood a few feet away staring at the page. Something about him felt different. There was no glow, no dramatic transformation, yet he seemed more solid somehow, more certain. He looked like someone who had finally realized uncertainty wasn’t weakness. Adrian slowly approached the desk and read the words for himself.
"So it wants you to write."
"Apparently."
"Why?"
"Because I started the story."
Adrian frowned. "That’s not enough."
"I know."
"Then why does it need you?"
Kai stared at the pen. "Because apparently I’m the only person stupid enough to keep doing this."
To his surprise, Adrian almost smiled. "That’s probably true."
Kai blinked. "Was that a joke?"
"Maybe."
"You’re getting better."
A faint smile tugged at Adrian’s lips. "I’ve had a good teacher."
For a brief moment, the room felt almost normal. Then the pen moved again.
YOU HAVE 10 MINUTES.
Kai’s smile vanished. "Ten minutes for what?"
The pen scratched another sentence onto the page.
THE FIRST SENTENCE WILL BE REWRITTEN.
Adrian’s expression darkened. "What happens then?"
Kai stared at the words. "I think we’ll find out what happens if the story starts differently."
A crack suddenly appeared across the white ceiling. Then another. And another. Thin black fractures spread silently overhead until the entire ceiling resembled shattered glass. Beyond the cracks, Kai saw something impossible. Platform Zero. The station. The trains. Luna, Daniel, Noah, the conductor, and the stranger. Everyone was there, frozen like photographs trapped inside a frame.
Kai stepped closer to the ceiling. "Luna!" No response. "Daniel!" Nothing. He looked toward Noah and received the same silence. The entire station had been paused.
"They’re trapped," Adrian said.
"No," Kai replied, shaking his head. "They’re waiting."
"For what?"
Kai looked back at the pen. "For me."
The first sentence of Adrian’s story appeared on the page, and Kai froze. He recognized the handwriting immediately. It was his own.
Adrian opened his eyes without knowing where he was.
His pulse quickened. He remembered writing that sentence somewhere else, a long time ago. He remembered sitting alone late at night in front of a blank document. He remembered typing those words and thinking the character had potential. He remembered naming him Adrian. After that, there was only emptiness. The story had remained unfinished.
"That’s it," Kai whispered.
Adrian looked at him. "What?"
"The first sentence. This is where everything started."
Adrian read it carefully before frowning. "What’s wrong with it?"
"Nothing."
"Then why change it?"
Kai hesitated. "Because it’s incomplete."
"It says I opened my eyes."
"Exactly."
"And?"
"It assumes you were asleep."
The room fell silent.
Adrian stared at him. Kai leaned against the desk and continued quietly. "But what if you weren’t?"
Something shifted behind Adrian’s eyes.
"What if you were awake the entire time?"
Neither of them spoke for several moments. Then Adrian’s expression changed as a memory surfaced from somewhere deep inside him. It wasn’t of Kai, the white room, or his childhood. It was something older. Darkness. Awareness. Waiting.
His eyes widened. "I remember."
Kai looked up sharply. "What?"
"I wasn’t asleep." Adrian pointed at the sentence. "I was waiting."
"For what?"
Adrian slowly turned toward the cracked ceiling. "For someone to notice me."
The pen lifted, hovered, and lowered itself again. The original sentence began changing as words crossed themselves out and rewrote their meaning.
Adrian opened his eyes because someone finally noticed he was there.
The room trembled. Adrian stared at the new sentence and smiled. "That’s better."
Immediately, the cracks in the ceiling began sealing themselves one by one. The station beyond started moving again. Luna blinked. Daniel shifted. Noah inhaled sharply. The conductor raised his head. Time had resumed.
Relief washed through Kai, but it lasted only a second before the pen wrote another sentence.
BUT SOMEONE ELSE WAS WATCHING.
His relief vanished.
Adrian looked at him. "What does that mean?"
"I don’t know."
The pen continued.
THE ONE WHO CREATED ADRIAN WAS NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO NOTICE HIM.
Cold spread through Kai’s chest. "Then who was?"
The pen stopped. Silence filled the room before a single word appeared.
YOU.
Kai stared. "Me?"
Adrian looked confused. "You said you created me."
"I did."
The pen moved again.
NO.
Ink spread across the page faster than before.
YOU WERE NOT THE AUTHOR.
Kai’s heart began hammering. Adrian slowly turned toward him. The room tilted, and memories rearranged themselves. Kai saw the white room again, but this time the memory was different. He wasn’t sitting at the desk. He was standing in front of it. Someone else occupied the chair, holding the pen. Their face remained hidden.
He heard his own voice.
"Please write him."
The figure paused. "Why?"
"Because he’s alone."
The unseen writer was silent for a moment before asking, "And what about you?"
A long pause followed.
"I’ll stay with him."
The memory shattered.
Kai stumbled backward, and Adrian caught him before he fell. "Kai?"
Kai stared at him, his voice shaking. "You didn’t create me."
Adrian frowned. "Then who did?"
Kai looked toward the pen. "I don’t know."
The pen began moving again, faster and harder than before. Words flooded across the page.
YOU WERE THE FIRST ONE LEFT BEHIND.
YOU WERE THE FIRST ONE FORGOTTEN.
YOU WERE THE FIRST ONE TO ASK FOR A STORY.
Kai’s knees weakened. Adrian tightened his grip to keep him standing. The white room trembled violently.
Then a voice echoed from beyond the fractured walls.
"Kai!"
He looked up.
The stranger stood beyond a doorway of broken light. For the first time since meeting him, he looked terrified. Not concerned. Not worried. Terrified.
"You need to stop reading."
Kai stared at him. "Why?"
The stranger’s voice cracked. "Because if you remember everything, you’ll remember who wrote you."
Kai’s blood turned cold. "Who?"
The stranger looked toward Adrian, then toward the pen, and finally back at Kai. His expression held nothing but dread.
"The same person who is writing this sentence right now."
The pen stopped. A final line appeared.
HELLO AGAIN, KAI.
Beneath it, another line slowly began to form. A name. Not Adrian. Not Kai. Not the Author. A name Kai recognized instantly, a name that should not have existed outside fiction.
The first letter appeared.
F.
Then another.
I.
Kai’s eyes widened. "No..."
The pen continued.
N.
The room shook harder.
The stranger closed his eyes.
The conductor’s distant voice echoed through the cracks above. "Kai, don’t let it finish."
But the pen never stopped moving.
N.
The completed name stared back at him from the page.
FINN.
For a moment, the room became completely silent. Then the name crossed itself out. The ink struck through every letter again and again as though the page itself rejected it.
New words appeared beneath the ruined name.
THAT IS WHAT HE CALLED ME.
The temperature in the room dropped. Kai could barely breathe. The stranger’s face had gone completely pale. Adrian slowly stepped away from the desk. Neither of them wanted to be closer to those words anymore.
Then the pen wrote one final sentence.
MY REAL NAME IS MUCH OLDER.
And somewhere beyond the white walls, something knocked.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Not on a door. Not on the room.
On reality itself.
