Chapter 133: The Reader

Kai had seen monsters before. He had seen things that shouldn’t exist. He had watched trains arrive from nowhere, witnessed people disappear from reality, and stood face-to-face with versions of himself that had lived lives he couldn’t remember. None of it prepared him for the figure standing between the shelves.

It had no face, no eyes, no mouth, and no features at all. Yet Kai knew it was smiling. Not because he could see it, but because the entire library seemed to know. Every book on every shelf had stopped moving. Every page had gone still. Even the dust hanging in the air appeared frozen.

Finn stood beside Kai with the blank book pressed tightly against his chest, his expression completely different from before. "Don’t look at it," he said.

Kai kept his eyes on the figure. "What is it?"

"The Reader."

Kai swallowed hard. "You said the Reader was outside the story."

"It was."

"Then why is it here?"

Finn’s grip tightened around the book. "Because someone opened the door."

Kai frowned. "Who?"

Finn looked directly at him. "You."

"I didn’t open anything."

"You remembered."

"That’s not the same thing."

Finn pointed toward the faceless figure. "It is here. The moment you remembered that you were part of the story, the boundary disappeared."

Kai slowly looked around. The library no longer felt like a library. It felt like a room someone had forgotten to finish. Walls ended halfway through their construction. Bookshelves floated in empty darkness. The floor stretched farther than the eye could see. Beyond the shelves, Kai noticed something that made his blood run cold. A giant white rectangle hung in the distance. At first it looked like a page, but it wasn’t. It was an opening. Beyond it there was nothing—no world, no sky, no darkness. Only an endless emptiness. The Reader stood between Kai and that opening.

The figure raised one hand.

The entire library shook.

Books flew from the shelves in every direction. Finn grabbed Kai’s shoulder and pulled him backward. "Move!"

They ran.

Kai didn’t ask where. He simply followed. The shelves blurred around them as they sprinted through the endless library. Books crashed onto the floor behind them. Some burst open when they landed. Others screamed. One book whispered Kai’s name. Another screamed Adrian’s. A third repeated Luna’s name over and over until Kai nearly turned toward it.

"Don’t listen!" Finn shouted.

Kai forced himself to keep moving. "What are those books?"

"Stories."

"Whose stories?"

"Everyone’s."

"Then why are they screaming?"

Finn glanced over his shoulder. "Because they’re being read."

Kai felt his stomach twist. "What does that mean?"

"It means someone is turning their pages."

Without warning, the faceless figure appeared ahead of them. Kai stopped so abruptly that Finn nearly crashed into him.

"How?"

Finn grabbed his arm. "Don’t stop!"

They spun around.

The figure was behind them now.

Kai’s heart hammered against his ribs. "It’s following us."

"No." Finn shook his head. "It’s not following us."

"Then what is it doing?"

Finn looked down at the blank book. "It’s waiting."

"For what?"

Finn’s voice was barely above a whisper. "For the story to end."

A voice echoed through the library. It wasn’t the Author. It wasn’t the older Kai. It wasn’t even human. It sounded like thousands of people speaking at once.

WHY DO YOU RUN?

Kai froze.

Finn’s eyes widened. "Don’t answer."

The voice continued.

YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

Kai looked toward the shelves.

YOU RUN FROM YOUR MEMORIES.

A book fell open. Kai saw himself inside it—a younger version sitting alone. Another book opened, showing him running through a burning city. Another revealed him holding Adrian’s body. Another showed him standing beside Luna. Another showed him completely alone.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Thousands of versions of himself.

Thousands of lives.

The Reader spoke once more.

YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN MANY ENDINGS.

Kai stared at the pages scattered around him. "Then why are you still reading?"

Silence followed.

Finn looked horrified.

The Reader appeared closer than before. Its blank face tilted toward him.

BECAUSE YOU KEEP ASKING FOR ANOTHER.

Something inside Kai broke.

In that moment, he understood.

The Reader wasn’t hunting them. It wasn’t trying to kill them. It was simply watching. Waiting. Every time Kai rejected an ending, the story continued. Every time he refused to accept loss, another Chapter appeared. Another world. Another life. Another beginning.

He had blamed the Author.

He had blamed fate.

He had blamed the story itself.

But perhaps he had been the one refusing to let anything end.

Kai turned toward Finn. "How many times?"

Finn didn’t answer.

"How many times did I ask for another chance?"

Finn lowered his eyes. "Thousands."

Kai closed his eyes.

"So I’m the problem."

"No." Finn shook his head. "You’re human."

"That’s not an excuse."

"No. But it is an explanation."

The Reader raised its hand. The blank book in Finn’s arms opened by itself. Pages flipped rapidly before stopping on a single page.

Words appeared.

KAI MERCER WILL DIE.

Kai stared.

Finn’s face went pale.

The sentence changed.

KAI MERCER WILL LIVE.

Then it changed again.

KAI MERCER WILL DIE.

KAI MERCER WILL LIVE.

The page couldn’t decide.

The Reader tilted its head.

Kai slowly approached the book. "What happens if I choose?"

Finn immediately grabbed his wrist. "You can’t."

"Why?"

"Because that’s exactly what it wants."

Kai looked at the Reader, then at the page, and finally at Finn. "Maybe. But I’ve been letting everyone else decide for me."

He gently pulled free.

"I think I’m done with that."

His fingers touched the page.

The entire library disappeared.

Kai found himself standing alone on a blank white page. There was no Finn, no Adrian, no Luna, no Daniel, no station, and no trains. There was only emptiness.

The Reader stood before him.

Kai met its gaze. "What do you want?"

Instead of answering, the Reader created a chair. Then another. A table appeared between them. A pen rested at its center.

Kai recognized the scene immediately.

The white room.

The beginning.

The first time he had written Adrian.

The Reader sat down while Kai remained standing. A blank page appeared between them. The Reader pointed toward it.

Understanding dawned on him.

"You want me to write."

The Reader nodded.

"What?"

It pointed first at Kai and then at the page.

"You want me to write my own story?"

Again, the Reader nodded.

Kai picked up the pen. It felt strangely familiar in his hand. He lowered it toward the page but stopped before making a mark.

He thought about Adrian.

About Luna.

About Daniel.

About Finn.

About every person he had lost and every ending he had rejected.

Then he looked at the Reader.

"What if I don’t write anything?"

The Reader tilted its head.

Kai smiled faintly. "Then the story can’t tell me what happens."

The Reader remained motionless.

Kai set the pen back down.

"I don’t need an ending."

The blank page remained untouched.

"I don’t need a beginning."

He stepped away from the table.

"I just need to keep going."

For the first time, the Reader moved. Its head lowered slightly, almost like disappointment.

Then the entire white room cracked.

Kai fell.

He fell through pages, stories, memories, worlds, and lives. He saw Adrian. He saw Luna. He saw Finn. He saw the station. He saw the trains. He saw the old conductor.

Then he saw something else.

A bedroom.

A desk.

A computer.

A chair.

A pair of hands resting on a keyboard.

Someone was sitting there.

Someone reading.

Someone writing.

Kai couldn’t see their face, but the screen displayed a single line.

Chapter 133 — The Reader.

His blood turned cold.

Beneath the title, a cursor blinked patiently.

Waiting.

The story hadn’t ended.

It was waiting for the next sentence.

Then Kai realized something terrifying.

The Reader wasn’t outside the story anymore.

The Reader was wherever the next sentence came from.

Which meant that every time someone wrote the next line, the story opened its eyes.

Kai’s eyes widened.

Darkness swallowed him whole.

Somewhere beyond the page, a cursor blinked again.

Once.

Twice.

Then new words began appearing.

Kai Mercer opened his eyes...
