The door marked MERCER stood at the end of the corridor. Unlike the thousands of other doors surrounding it, this one was plain. There were no carvings, no strange symbols, and no scenes playing across its surface. It was simply old, dark wood with a brass handle that looked as though someone had touched it a thousand times. Kai slowed as he approached it, causing Adrian to nearly walk into his back.
"What?"
Kai didn’t answer. Luna looked past his shoulder and immediately understood.
"That’s the door."
Finn glanced toward the number floating above the corridor. The countdown had fallen to seventy-two and was still decreasing. Kai stared at the name engraved into the wood.
MERCER.
"That’s your last name," Adrian said.
"I know."
"Then what’s wrong?"
Kai shook his head slowly.
"I don’t know."
He reached toward the handle. The instant his fingers brushed the metal, the entire Archive fell silent. Every door stopped moving. Every distant voice vanished. Even the countdown froze in place.
72.
Kai pulled his hand away.
"What just happened?"
Finn stared at the door.
"I think it recognized you."
Kai looked at him.
"That’s not comforting."
"It wasn’t supposed to be."
Before anyone could say anything else, the door opened by itself. Warm light spilled into the corridor beyond. Kai stepped through first. Luna followed immediately, with Adrian and Finn close behind. The door closed behind them.
They found themselves standing inside a bedroom.
Kai recognized it instantly.
His childhood bedroom.
But not the version he remembered. This room belonged to an earlier time. A crib stood beside the window. A stuffed rabbit lay on the floor. The walls were brighter, the furniture newer. Sitting beside the crib was a woman.
Kai’s mother.
She looked far younger than he remembered.
She was holding a baby.
Kai stared.
"That’s me."
Luna glanced at him.
"You’re a baby."
"Thanks."
She smiled faintly.
Kai watched his mother. She was crying, not loudly, but quietly. The kind of crying people tried desperately to hide. A moment later, the bedroom door opened and a man stepped inside.
Elias.
He looked younger too.
Closing the door behind him, he approached slowly.
"We have to decide tonight."
Kai’s mother immediately shook her head.
"No."
"We don’t have time."
"He’s our son."
"I know."
"Then stop talking about him like he’s a problem."
Elias knelt beside her.
"I’m not."
"You are."
His gaze settled on the baby.
"We knew this could happen."
His mother wiped her eyes.
"I didn’t think it would happen this early."
"What happens if he remembers?"
She looked down at the infant in her arms.
"He’ll become the Author."
Elias nodded.
"And if he doesn’t?"
Her voice became quieter.
"He’ll become the story."
Kai felt his blood run cold.
Luna glanced at him.
"What does that mean?"
Kai shook his head.
"I don’t know."
The memory continued.
Elias reached into his coat and pulled out a notebook.
The first notebook.
The same notebook.
He opened it.
Three names were written inside.
Kai Mercer.
Adrian Vale.
Finn Mercer.
Kai stared.
"Finn Mercer?"
Finn went completely still.
"What?"
Kai pointed toward the page.
"Your last name."
Finn stepped forward.
"That’s impossible."
Elias continued speaking.
"There is one more."
Kai’s mother immediately shook her head.
"No."
"We need four."
"Three is enough."
"It isn’t."
She looked directly at him.
"What happens to the fourth?"
Elias didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
His silence said everything.
Kai’s mother lowered her head.
"He dies."
The scene shifted.
Suddenly Kai was looking at another memory.
He was five years old, sitting beneath a tree. Adrian sat beside him. Finn was there too. Across from them sat another little boy holding a toy soldier. Kai didn’t recognize him.
His mother stood nearby, watching the children with tears in her eyes.
The boy looked toward young Kai.
"Do you want to play?"
Young Kai nodded eagerly.
"What’s your name?"
The boy smiled.
"Mercer."
Young Kai frowned.
"That’s not a first name."
The boy laughed.
"I know."
"Then what is it?"
The boy leaned closer.
"You’ll remember."
The memory ended.
Kai stood frozen.
Luna touched his shoulder.
"Kai."
He didn’t respond.
Adrian stared at the empty space where the memory had vanished.
"Who was that?"
Kai shook his head.
"I don’t know."
Finn’s voice was barely above a whisper.
"I do."
Everyone looked at him.
His face had gone pale.
"That was me."
Kai frowned.
"No."
"I remember now."
Finn pressed a hand against his chest.
"That was me before I became Finn."
Kai stared.
"What does that mean?"
Finn looked toward the door.
"I wasn’t born Finn."
Silence settled over the room.
"I was born Mercer."
Kai’s eyes widened.
Finn swallowed.
"My name wasn’t Finn."
He struggled to force the words out.
"It was..."
His voice broke.
"Michael."
Kai stared.
"Michael Mercer."
The room shook violently.
A crack spread across the door behind them.
Then a voice echoed through the room.
"Correct."
Everyone turned.
The voice belonged to Elias.
But Elias wasn’t there.
Only his voice remained.
"Michael Mercer was the fourth."
Kai’s heart pounded.
"What happened to him?"
Silence followed.
Then came the answer.
"He died."
Finn closed his eyes.
"I remember."
Kai stared at him.
"You died?"
"Yes."
"When?"
Finn opened his eyes.
"The same night you were supposed to."
Kai felt sick.
"The accident."
Finn nodded.
"I was in the car."
Kai couldn’t breathe.
"You saved me."
"I tried."
"You died."
"Yes."
"Then how are you here?"
Finn smiled sadly.
"Because you couldn’t accept losing me."
Memories slammed into Kai like a tidal wave.
Finn.
The accident.
The blood.
The hospital.
His mother screaming.
His own voice begging someone to save him.
Then the notebook.
A name written across a page.
Not Michael.
Finn.
A new identity.
A new story.
A new life.
Kai had taken his dead brother’s memories and rewritten them.
Not Adrian.
Not Luna.
Finn.
His brother.
Kai stumbled backward.
"You’re my brother."
Finn looked at him.
"Yes."
Kai stared in disbelief.
"You’ve known this the whole time?"
"No."
"When did you remember?"
"When we entered the Archive."
Kai laughed weakly despite the tears gathering in his eyes.
"Of course."
Finn stepped closer.
"I wasn’t supposed to remember."
"Why?"
"Because you changed my name."
Kai looked at him.
"Why did I do that?"
Finn smiled.
"Because you thought that if you gave me a new name..."
He rested a hand on Kai’s shoulder.
"...I wouldn’t have to die anymore."
Kai’s eyes burned.
"I’m sorry."
Finn shook his head.
"Don’t."
"I killed you."
"No."
"I did."
"You didn’t."
Kai looked at him helplessly.
Finn smiled.
"You were five years old."
He paused.
"You were scared."
Kai lowered his head.
"And I spent all these years pretending you were my friend."
Finn laughed softly.
"You were terrible at pretending."
Kai laughed through his tears.
"Yeah."
A loud sound echoed through the room.
The countdown had resumed.
41. 42.
The bedroom began collapsing around them. The walls peeled apart. The ceiling vanished. The floor dissolved beneath their feet. Moments later they were standing back inside the corridor of the Archive.
But something had changed.
Thousands of doors were opening.
People were emerging from them.
Every version.
Every rejected life.
Every forgotten character.
Every possibility Kai had ever created.
Adrian looked around uneasily.
"We need to move."
Kai wiped his eyes.
"Where?"
Finn pointed toward the far end of the corridor.
"There."
Another door stood open.
Unlike every other door, it had no name.
Only a sentence.
THE PERSON YOU WERE BEFORE THE STORY.
Kai stared at it.
Luna stepped beside him.
"That’s yours."
Kai nodded.
He reached toward the handle, then hesitated.
"Come with me."
Luna smiled.
"Obviously."
Adrian nodded.
Finn sighed dramatically.
"You really don’t know how to do anything alone."
Kai smiled.
"Apparently not."
Together they opened the door.
Inside was darkness.
Not the cold darkness of the Reader.
This darkness felt warm.
Safe.
Familiar.
Kai heard children laughing.
Then another voice.
A woman’s voice.
"Come inside. Dinner’s ready."
His heart stopped.
He knew that voice.
His mother.
Slowly he stepped forward.
A house emerged from the darkness.
His childhood home.
The porch light glowed warmly.
The windows shone with life.
Someone was cooking inside.
A small boy sat on the porch.
Five years old.
Kai.
Beside him sat three other children.
Adrian.
Finn.
And the boy from the earlier memory.
The fourth child looked up and met Kai’s gaze.
Then he smiled.
"You finally came back."
Kai couldn’t speak.
"Who are you?"
The boy stood.
He looked exactly like Kai.
Not a version.
Not a copy.
Something deeper.
Something older.
The original.
"The person you forgot."
Kai stared at him.
The boy smiled.
"My name is..."
He paused.
Then spoke it.
The moment Kai heard the name, his entire world stopped.
Because he knew it.
He had always known it.
The name his mother whispered in his dreams.
The name Elias refused to say.
The name written on the first page.
Cael Mercer.
Kai stared.
"You’re me."
Cael shook his head.
"No."
A gentle smile crossed his face.
"I’m the reason you exist."
Behind them, the Archive began collapsing completely.
The countdown reached ten.
Nine.
Eight.
Cael extended his hand.
"Come on."
Kai stared at it.
"Where?"
Cael smiled.
"Home."
The countdown continued.
Seven.
Six.
Kai reached out and took his hand.
The world began disappearing.
Five.
Four.
Luna grabbed Kai.
Adrian grabbed Luna.
Finn grabbed Adrian.
Cael stood at the center of everything.
Three.
The Archive screamed.
Two.
Every door opened at once.
One.
And finally, Kai remembered the truth.
He wasn’t the Author.
He wasn’t the character.
He wasn’t even the boy who had created the story.
He was the fourth rewrite.
And somewhere before Kai Mercer had ever existed, there had been Cael Mercer.
The first boy.
The original.
The one who had written himself out of existence so everyone else could live.
The countdown reached zero.
And the world went white.
