Chapter 155: What the Dead Remember

The scratching stopped.

For one terrible second, the entire room became silent. Eden stood frozen between Luna and Eve, staring at the cracked floor. Dust drifted through the air, settling across the open books that surrounded them. Thousands of pages fluttered without wind, each one carrying a memory that no longer had a person attached to it.

Then the floor moved.

Not cracked. Moved.

Something beneath the library dragged itself against the underside of the world, and the sound traveled through the stone like fingernails scraping across bone. Luna tightened her grip on Eden’s hand and whispered for him not to look down. When he asked why, she admitted she already had and wished she hadn’t.

Another scraping sound echoed through the room. This time, something pressed against the floor from underneath. A shape formed beneath the stone, and five long fingers slowly pushed through the crack. Eve immediately backed away and told everyone to move.

Cael didn’t.

He simply stood there watching.

Eden looked at him. "What is that?"

Cael smiled faintly. "You asked for them back."

"I didn’t ask for that."

"You did."

"I asked for my friends."

Cael’s smile faded as he looked around at the thousands of books. "They’re not your friends anymore."

Eden stared at him. "What are they?"

Cael glanced toward the shelves. "They’re everything you refused to let die."

The fingers disappeared beneath the floor. For a brief moment, nothing happened. Then the entire library shook violently. Books began falling from the shelves as Luna pulled Eden backward just before a section of the ceiling crashed down where he had been standing.

"Move!"

They ran.

Eve was already sprinting toward the far side of the library. Cael followed behind them, walking instead of running. He didn’t seem worried. He didn’t need to be. The darkness beneath the floor followed him. Everywhere he stepped, another crack appeared.

Eden glanced back. "Cael! Why are you doing this?"

Cael’s expression softened. "Because you forgot me."

"I didn’t!"

"You did."

"I remembered you."

"After they told you."

Eden stopped.

To his surprise, Cael stopped too. Around them, the library continued collapsing, but neither moved. Eden stared at him in confusion.

"What do you mean?"

Cael pointed toward Luna.

"She didn’t tell you everything."

Luna’s face immediately paled.

Eden looked at her. "What didn’t she tell me?"

She swallowed hard. "Eden..."

"Tell me."

For a moment she hesitated. Then she spoke.

"Cael wasn’t erased because you chose me."

Eden frowned. "Then why?"

Luna looked directly at Cael. "Because you chose him first."

Silence followed.

Eden slowly turned back toward Cael.

"You chose Cael before anyone else," Luna continued. "Before Mira. Before Adrian. Before Finn. Before me."

Realization slowly settled over Eden.

"You were the first."

Cael nodded.

"Yes."

"Then why did you disappear?"

Cael looked down before answering.

"Because I was the one who told you the truth."

"What truth?"

"That you were going to die."

A strange pressure settled in Eden’s chest.

Cael stepped closer. "You were six years old. You were already sick. Your mother knew. Mira knew. Everyone knew except you."

Eden immediately shook his head.

"No."

"Yes."

"I wasn’t sick."

"You were."

"I don’t remember."

"You weren’t supposed to."

Eden turned sharply toward Eve.

"Is that true?"

She didn’t answer at first.

"Eve."

Finally, she nodded.

"Yes."

Eden stared at her in disbelief.

"You knew I was dying."

"Yes."

"And you erased it."

"I had to."

"Why?"

"Because you wouldn’t accept it."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"Of course I wouldn’t."

He looked toward the floor where the scratching had finally gone silent.

"For now."

Then he looked back at Cael.

"Why did you tell me?"

Eve answered before Cael could.

"Because he loved you enough to let you hate him."

Cael smiled faintly.

"You were angry when I told you."

"How angry?"

"You tried to kill me."

Eden blinked.

"I did?"

"You were six."

Cael shrugged. "You weren’t very strong."

Despite everything happening around them, Eden almost laughed.

"Did I hurt you?"

"No."

"Then why did you disappear?"

Cael’s gaze drifted toward Luna.

"Because after you tried to kill me, you asked me to leave."

Eden’s smile vanished.

"You asked me to disappear?"

Cael nodded.

"You said you never wanted to see me again."

The words hit harder than any attack.

"And you listened."

"I always listened."

Eden looked down.

"I was a child."

"I know."

"I didn’t understand."

"I know."

"I didn’t mean it."

Cael smiled sadly.

"I know."

Before Eden could say anything else, the floor exploded.

A wave of blackness erupted through the library. Cael reacted instantly, grabbing Eden and throwing him aside. The darkness struck Cael instead and swallowed him completely.

"CAEL!"

Eden crashed into the ground.

Luna pulled him up immediately.

"Keep moving!"

"No!"

"He’s gone!"

"I know!"

"Then move!"

Eden looked toward the darkness.

Something was standing inside it.

A massive figure formed from thousands of overlapping pages. Faces appeared across its body—Mira, Finn, Adrian, strangers, children, adults, countless forgotten people. Every face opened its mouth at the same time.

"Remember."

The creature took a step forward.

The floor cracked.

"Remember."

Another step.

"Remember."

Eden’s vision blurred.

Inside the creature, he saw Mira standing there as if she were alive. She looked directly at him and spoke his name.

"Eden."

His heart stopped.

"Mira?"

She smiled.

"I’m here."

Luna grabbed his arm.

"That’s not her."

"What?"

"It’s using your memories."

Mira’s voice echoed again.

"Eden... please."

The creature stretched an enormous hand toward him.

"Remember me."

Eden took a step forward.

Luna pulled him back.

"Don’t!"

"I have to."

"No!"

"She needs me."

"That isn’t her!"

"How do you know?"

Luna’s face crumpled.

"Because she’s dead."

Eden froze.

The creature smiled.

Then Mira vanished and Finn appeared in her place. Blood covered him.

"Eden."

"You left me."

"No."

"You forgot me."

"No."

"You chose her."

Eden shook his head desperately.

"I didn’t."

The creature shifted again.

Now Adrian sat beneath the tree, completely alone.

"You promised we’d stay together."

Tears filled Eden’s eyes.

"I tried."

The creature smiled.

"You failed."

Eden clenched his fists.

"Yes."

The creature stepped closer.

"And that’s why you’re mine."

Something inside Eden finally snapped.

He stopped crying.

Stopped shaking.

He looked directly at the thing wearing the faces of everyone he had lost.

"You’re not them."

The creature stopped moving.

Eden wiped blood from his mouth.

"You’re just what they left behind."

The creature tilted its head.

"You remember."

"Yes."

"You remember their deaths."

"Yes."

"You remember their pain."

"Yes."

"You remember every person you failed."

Eden’s voice softened.

"Yes."

Hundreds of mouths opened at once.

"Then you understand."

Eden stared at it.

"I understand that you’re lonely."

The creature froze.

"You’re not angry because I killed them."

Silence.

"You’re angry because nobody remembers you."

The many faces vanished.

For the first time, only one remained.

Cael.

A younger Cael.

The original one.

The boy Eden had created.

He looked terrified.

Eden whispered his name.

"Cael."

The creature stared at him.

"I remember you."

Its expression twisted.

"You remember?"

"Yes."

"You remember everything?"

"No."

Eden stepped forward.

"But I remember enough."

The creature began shaking.

"I don’t want to disappear."

Eden slowly extended his hand.

"You don’t have to."

The creature hesitated.

"You lied before."

"I did."

"You’ll forget again."

"Maybe."

"Then why should I trust you?"

Eden smiled sadly.

"You shouldn’t."

The creature stared at his hand for several long seconds.

Then it reached forward.

Their fingers touched.

The entire library exploded with light.

Books flew from the shelves. Every page opened. Every memory rushed through Eden at once. He saw Cael’s creation, the first time he smiled, the games beneath the tree, the promises they made, their arguments, their fights, and finally the day Eden told him to disappear.

He saw Cael crying alone.

He saw him walking into darkness.

He saw what he became afterward.

Eden’s eyes widened.

"You didn’t become the Forgotten."

Cael’s voice echoed around him.

"No."

"You became what happened when I forgot you."

"Yes."

The giant creature disappeared.

Only young Cael remained.

Exhausted.

Broken.

Real.

Eden pulled him into a hug.

Cael froze before slowly hugging him back.

"I thought you hated me."

"I never did."

"You told me to leave."

"I was scared."

"I know."

They stood together for several moments before Cael finally whispered:

"You still have to pay."

Eden pulled away.

"What?"

Cael pointed behind him.

The library was gone.

The shelves were gone.

The books were gone.

Everything had vanished.

Only Luna, Eve, and the others remained.

And something was wrong.

Luna stood completely still.

Her eyes were empty.

Eden rushed toward her.

"Luna?"

No response.

He touched her shoulder.

She looked at him.

"Who are you?"

Eden froze.

"What?"

Luna stepped backward.

"I don’t know you."

"Luna..."

"Don’t call me that."

Her voice was cold.

Eden turned toward Eve.

"What happened?"

Eve’s face had gone pale.

"The price."

"What price?"

"You brought Cael back."

Eden looked at Cael.

"That’s good."

"No."

Eve shook her head.

"You don’t understand."

"Then explain."

She pointed toward Luna.

"When one forgotten person returns, someone who was remembered has to become forgotten."

Eden’s blood ran cold.

"No."

Luna stared at him with empty eyes.

There was no recognition.

No warmth.

Nothing.

Eden stepped toward her.

"You know me."

She shook her head.

"No."

"You love me."

"I don’t."

"You do."

"I don’t."

"You promised."

"I don’t remember."

Eden stopped breathing.

Behind him, Cael began crying.

Eve’s voice was barely a whisper.

"Now you understand the price."

Eden looked from Luna to Cael.

He had finally brought back the person he lost.

And in return, the universe had taken the person he chose.

Luna slowly turned away.

Eden reached for her hand.

She pulled away immediately.

"Please don’t touch me."

Those words shattered something inside him.

The lights above them flickered.

A calm, familiar voice echoed through the darkness.

"One forgotten."

A pause.

"One remembered."

Another pause.

"Choose again."

Eden slowly looked up.

The voice continued.

"This time, there will be no third option."

Then, somewhere behind him, he heard a voice that shouldn’t have existed.

A soft whisper.

"Eden."

His heart stopped.

Mira.

But Mira wasn’t supposed to be alive.
