Chapter 60: Behind the Wall

The third knock lingered in the apartment long after the sound itself had faded.

Not because it echoed.

Because Kai couldn’t convince himself it had actually ended.

His fingertips remained pressed against the section of wall that had answered him.

Not echoed.

Answered.

The distinction mattered.

His breathing grew shallower with every passing second. The drywall beneath his palm was unnaturally cold. Not the cool touch of an air-conditioned apartment, but the damp, heavy cold of underground places where sunlight had never reached. It reminded him of abandoned subway tunnels, flooded basements, places that had been forgotten long before he was born.

Nobody spoke.

The silence stretched until it became its own sound.

Finally—

"Kai."

Luna’s voice slipped through his headset.

"...Yeah?"

"Step away from it."

He tried.

His feet didn’t move.

It wasn’t fear.

It wasn’t paralysis.

It was something stranger.

He was listening.

The wall felt different now.

Not alive.

Aware.

Another vibration drifted through the plaster.

Not another knock.

Not even a scrape.

It felt more like someone shifting their weight on the opposite side.

Carefully.

Quietly.

Someone standing with one hand against the wall exactly where Kai’s hand rested, separated by only a few inches of plaster.

Waiting.

His pulse hammered so violently he could hear blood rushing through his ears.

Very slowly, he peeled his hand away.

The cold lingered on his fingertips.

He took one step backward.

Then another.

Only after putting nearly six feet between himself and the wall did he realize he had been holding his breath.

"I don’t think it’s empty."

His voice sounded smaller than he intended.

Luna answered almost immediately.

"No."

A pause.

"I don’t think it is either."

For someone who always seemed to have an explanation, that admission carried more weight than reassurance ever could.

Kai rubbed his hand against his jeans, trying to chase away the lingering cold.

It didn’t help.

The chill wasn’t on his skin anymore.

It was somewhere beneath it.

His phone buzzed.

The sound made him jump.

Not Discord.

Not another anonymous text.

Derek.

Kai answered without taking his eyes off the kitchen wall.

"What?"

"I need you to answer something."

His tone was different.

Flat.

Controlled.

The kind of voice people used when they were trying very hard not to panic.

Kai switched the call to speaker.

"What is it?"

"Did you tell anyone about the wall?"

"No."

"The blueprint?"

"No."

"The messages?"

"No."

"The hidden apartment?"

"No."

Derek inhaled sharply.

"Then explain this."

A notification appeared.

An image.

Uploaded less than thirty seconds ago.

Kai opened it.

His stomach lurched.

The photograph showed him standing exactly where he had been moments earlier.

One hand against the kitchen wall.

Head tilted slightly as he listened.

The angle was impossible.

It had been taken from inside the apartment.

Behind him.

Less than ten feet away.

Kai stared at it until the edges of the screen blurred.

"...Who took this?"

"No account name."

Derek sounded just as shaken.

"It was posted anonymously."

Kai slowly turned around.

The living room sat exactly as he’d left it.

The couch.

The coffee table.

The overturned picture frame from earlier, glass still scattered across the hardwood.

His streaming setup glowed quietly in the corner.

His chair remained pushed halfway beneath the desk.

Nobody.

No photographer.

No hidden figure.

No open closet.

Nothing.

Yet whoever had taken the picture would’ve been impossible to miss.

They would’ve been standing directly in the middle of the room.

His eyes swept over every shadow.

Every doorway.

Every place a person could hide.

Nothing.

He looked back at the phone.

The caption beneath the image contained only four words.

He’s getting close.

Thousands of people had already seen it.

The repost counter climbed so quickly the numbers barely settled before changing again.

Replies flooded underneath.

PixelPhantom:

HOW DID SOMEONE TAKE THIS??

CoffeeKillsSleep:

THIS WASN’T ON STREAM

RainyTuesday:

WAIT... WHO WAS HOLDING THE CAMERA?

Kai kept scrolling.

Something about the comments felt...

Different.

They weren’t arguing anymore.

Nobody was calling it fake.

Nobody was talking about editing.

For the first time that night, thousands of strangers had all noticed the same thing.

The photo couldn’t have been taken by the livestream.

Which meant—

Someone else had been inside his apartment.

Watching him.

Recording him.

Without ever appearing on camera.

Kai locked the phone.

His reflection stared back again.

He looked even paler now.

"Luna."

"I’m here."

"...I’m not alone."

"No."

She didn’t hesitate.

"You haven’t been alone for a long time."

Those words settled into the apartment like dust.

Kai slowly turned his head.

The hallway.

The bedroom.

The bathroom.

The kitchen.

Every dark corner he’d ignored because exhaustion had convinced him there was nothing left to surprise him.

He’d been wrong.

A realization crept over him.

Simple.

Obvious.

Painfully overdue.

He had spent the entire night reacting.

Every text.

Every knock.

Every strange sound.

Every impossible clue.

Every warning.

He’d chased every one of them.

Opened every message.

Looked where people told him to look.

Gone where something wanted him to go.

But he’d never stopped long enough to ask one question.

Who wanted him moving in the first place?

His breathing slowed.

Not from calm.

From focus.

"Derek."

"...Yeah?"

"The person posting those pictures..."

"What about them?"

"They don’t want me dead."

Silence.

Kai continued, more to himself than anyone else.

"If they wanted me dead..."

"They’ve had dozens of chances."

"The hallway."

"The stream."

"The apartment."

"The photographs."

"The hidden wall."

"They’ve had every opportunity."

He frowned.

"But instead..."

"They keep warning me."

"They scare me."

"They push me."

"They make sure I keep moving."

His eyes drifted toward the headset hanging around his neck.

"And every single time..."

He swallowed.

"Luna tells me to stop."

No answer came.

"The messages tell me to investigate."

"The stream wants me to watch."

"The knocks want me to follow."

"The pictures want me to notice."

"But you..."

He managed a tired smile.

"...You’ve spent the whole night trying to get me away from all of this."

The silence that followed lasted several heartbeats.

When Luna finally spoke, her voice carried an exhaustion that matched his own.

"I don’t want you to become curious."

Kai frowned.

"Why?"

"Because curiosity is how people stay."

His smile faded.

"What?"

"They stop trying to leave."

Another pause.

"They start trying to understand."

She inhaled quietly.

"And nobody who chooses understanding ever goes home."

Something tightened painfully inside Kai’s chest.

She wasn’t defending herself.

She wasn’t trying to convince him.

She sounded...

Afraid.

Afraid for him.

He hadn’t realized until that moment how desperately she’d been trying to keep him alive.

Not solve the mystery.

Not expose the truth.

Just survive until sunrise.

Another knock interrupted his thoughts.

The front door.

Firm.

Measured.

Professional.

Three knocks.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Daniel.

Kai looked toward the entrance.

Neither Luna nor Derek spoke.

Very slowly, he walked across the apartment.

Each step felt deliberate.

Careful.

He stopped before the peephole without immediately looking through it.

His hand hovered near the door.

"Kai?"

Luna’s voice was barely audible.

"What do you see?"

"I haven’t looked yet."

"...Good."

He leaned forward.

The hallway outside appeared ordinary.

Daniel stood closest to the door.

Behind him waited three officers.

One scratched absentmindedly at his beard.

Another checked his watch.

The third shifted his stance, adjusting the weight on his belt.

Natural movements.

Natural people.

Rainwater glistened faintly on the hallway carpet where they’d tracked it inside.

Everything looked...

Normal.

Kai kept watching.

Looking for something that didn’t belong.

Nothing.

Then his eyes drifted downward.

The polished floor.

Reflections.

Daniel had one.

The first officer had one.

The second officer...

Also had one.

The third didn’t.

Kai blinked.

Looked directly at the officer.

Then back at the floor.

Still nothing.

No reflection.

Just empty tile where one should have been.

The officer smiled.

Barely.

Just enough for Kai to notice.

His lips never moved.

Not once.

Yet a voice whispered inside Kai’s head.

Don’t let her keep you from me.

Ice flooded his veins.

He stumbled backward so quickly his shoulder slammed into the wall.

Outside, Daniel knocked again.

"Mr. Mercer?"

Another knock.

"Kai?"

"You still in there?"

The reflectionless officer slowly lifted his head.

His eyes met Kai’s through the peephole.

They shouldn’t have.

The peephole distorted everything.

Nobody should’ve been able to make eye contact through it.

He smiled wider.

Inside Kai’s mind, the same voice whispered again.

Open the door.

Then—

For the first time all night—

Luna screamed.

Not shouted.

Not warned.

Screamed.

"KAI!"

Her voice cracked with genuine terror.

Every ounce of composure she’d maintained throughout the night shattered in a single instant.

"DO NOT OPEN THAT DOOR!"
