Chapter 67: The Floor Above

Nobody moved.

The creaking came again.

Slow.

Measured.

Like someone walking across old wooden floorboards.

Except there shouldn’t have been any floorboards.

Kai knew this building better than most people. He knew every hallway, every broken light, every annoying sound the old structure made when the pipes shifted or the wind pushed against the windows.

Seven stories.

That was it.

The roof sat directly above him.

There was no eighth floor.

There never had been.

Yet something was pacing overhead.

One step.

A pause.

Another step.

The sound traveled from one side of the apartment to the other, moving with a strange confidence. It wasn’t random movement. It wasn’t someone searching.

It was deliberate.

Whoever—or whatever—was up there already knew the layout.

Kai slowly looked toward the ceiling.

Nothing moved.

The surface remained perfectly still, the same cracked white paint he had stared at hundreds of times before.

A faint crack stretched from the smoke detector toward the kitchen, the same crack he had noticed months ago. Back then, he’d assumed it was just another sign of an aging building.

Something old.

Something harmless.

Now...

He wasn’t so sure.

"Luna."

"I’m here."

Her voice came through the headset quietly.

Almost like she was afraid speaking too loudly would attract attention.

"Did you hear it?"

A brief pause.

"...Yes."

Her answer came immediately.

"I’ve never heard it before."

That caught Kai’s attention.

"What do you mean?"

"I’ve heard the knocking."

"The voices."

"The static."

She paused.

"But..."

Her voice lowered.

"I’ve never heard footsteps."

Derek spoke quietly through the call.

"I didn’t hear anything."

Kai frowned.

"What?"

"I heard you stop talking."

"I heard Daniel outside."

"But I didn’t hear footsteps."

Before Kai could respond, Daniel’s voice came through the apartment door.

"Neither did we."

Kai felt his pulse quicken.

Only him and Luna.

Again.

The same pattern.

The same impossible divide between what some people could experience and what others couldn’t.

Outside the apartment, the world continued like normal.

Police officers stood downstairs.

Daniel waited outside the door.

The building remained quiet.

But inside...

Something else kept finding its way in.

Another step echoed above them.

Then another.

The pace never changed.

It sounded almost...

Relaxed.

That was the part that bothered Kai the most.

Whatever was walking above them wasn’t searching.

It wasn’t confused.

It sounded comfortable.

Like it belonged there.

A cold thought slowly formed in his mind.

"Luna."

"...Yeah?"

"If there’s somebody walking..."

Kai swallowed.

His voice became quieter.

"...does that mean they live up there?"

Silence followed.

Not because Luna didn’t want to answer.

Because she was clearly asking herself the exact same question.

"I don’t know."

The footsteps stopped.

Instantly.

No final creak.

No fading footsteps.

No warning.

They simply vanished.

Kai held his breath.

The apartment became unnaturally still.

Not quiet.

Still.

Like the entire room was waiting for something to happen.

Listening.

His phone suddenly buzzed.

He ignored it.

A few seconds later, it buzzed again.

Then again.

Again.

Finally, it stopped.

A small smile appeared on Kai’s face despite everything happening around him.

"I think I’m getting better."

"You are."

Luna sounded proud.

"I noticed."

Those three words shouldn’t have affected him.

They were simple.

Almost meaningless.

But hearing Luna say them like she genuinely believed it made something in his chest loosen.

He hadn’t realized how much he needed someone to notice.

The laptop screen flickered.

The old desktop disappeared.

The room went dark for a moment.

Then white text appeared against the black screen.

Rule Two Confirmed.

Kai stared.

Below it, another sentence slowly typed itself out.

Rule Three can only be learned.

His eyebrows furrowed.

"What does that even mean?"

The laptop gave no response.

Instead, the words faded away.

A new image appeared.

Not a photograph.

A blueprint.

Kai leaned closer.

But this wasn’t a blueprint of the apartment building.

It was something much larger.

Something impossible.

Hallways stretched in directions that made no architectural sense. Rooms connected at impossible angles. Some apartments were labeled clearly, while others had been scratched out so aggressively that the original writing was impossible to read.

Near the center of the blueprint, Kai saw them.

7A.

Then 7B.

Then...

7C.

His expression changed.

Something was wrong.

It wasn’t at the end of a hallway.

It wasn’t positioned where the seventh floor should have been.

Thin lines extended away from it like roots spreading underground.

They connected 7C to dozens of other rooms.

Some were marked with names.

Others only had dates.

Kai leaned closer.

One room was labeled:

Mercer

Another:

Daniel Hayes

Another:

Unknown

Most of the rooms had been crossed out with thick black ink.

"What..."

The word barely escaped his mouth.

His eyes moved farther across the blueprint.

One room remained untouched.

Beside it was a small handwritten note.

Occupied.

Kai felt his stomach tighten.

"Luna."

"I’m looking."

"You see this?"

"...Yes."

"What is it?"

"I..."

She stopped.

Her breathing changed.

"I think..."

A pause.

"...these aren’t apartments."

Kai looked back at the impossible map.

"What are they?"

For several seconds, Luna didn’t answer.

Then she whispered,

"I think they’re..."

Another pause.

"...people."

Nobody spoke.

Kai let out a quiet laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because his brain refused to accept what he was seeing.

"No."

He shook his head.

"No."

"I’m too tired for symbolic haunted floor plans."

Derek’s voice came through the headset.

"Kai."

"...Yeah?"

"Zoom in."

Kai did.

Near the edge of the blueprint, almost hidden beneath another line, was a date.

Today’s date.

Beside it, one room began changing.

The handwritten label slowly rewrote itself.

Letter by letter.

Unknown disappeared.

Then new letters appeared.

Kai Mercer.

His blood turned cold.

"No."

The letters stopped.

A second line appeared beneath his name.

Pending.

The apartment lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every light went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Only the laptop remained on.

Its screen became the only source of light.

The blueprint disappeared.

A live camera feed replaced it.

Not from the ceiling.

Not from the hallway.

From somewhere outside the building.

High above.

Looking down.

Kai saw the entire apartment complex below.

The parking lot.

The police cars.

Daniel standing outside the entrance.

Everything.

Then the camera slowly tilted upward.

Past the roof.

Higher.

Higher.

And there...

Above the building...

Floating in complete silence...

Was another apartment.

Identical to 7C.

Suspended in the darkness like it had been built on an invisible floor.

Its single window glowed faintly.

Someone stood inside.

Watching the building below.

Watching Kai.

Then the figure slowly raised one hand.

And switched off the light.

The screen went black.
