Chapter 69: Someone Else’s Memory

Nobody spoke.

The cursor blinked patiently on the old laptop.

Once.

Twice.

Then another line appeared beneath the first.

You never lived here alone.

The words settled over the apartment with an almost physical weight.

Morning sunlight still poured through the blinds. Birds still sang outside. Somewhere down the street, a garbage truck rumbled past.

Reality continued as though nothing had happened.

Inside the apartment, however, the atmosphere had shifted again.

Daniel was the first to break the silence.

"I didn’t mean to upset you."

Kai barely heard him.

His eyes never left the laptop.

"You remember somebody."

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I know there was another person."

His brow furrowed.

"But every time I try to picture them..."

He rubbed his temple.

"It’s like trying to remember someone’s face after waking up from a dream."

Kai froze.

Those words.

He’d heard them before.

Almost exactly.

"Luna."

"...Yeah?"

"You said that."

"I know."

"The dream."

"My memories."

She sounded unsettled.

"I didn’t realize someone else described it the same way."

Kai looked from the laptop to Daniel.

Two people.

Different lives.

The same missing memories.

The same empty spaces where someone should have been.

That couldn’t be coincidence anymore.

Not after everything else.

He stepped away from the doorway and motioned for Daniel to come inside.

"You sure?"

"Yeah."

Daniel hesitated only a moment before stepping over the threshold.

The officers remained outside without question, pulling the apartment door shut behind him.

For the first time that morning, Kai wasn’t alone with impossible things.

Oddly enough...

That helped.

More than he expected.

Daniel slowly looked around the apartment.

His gaze stopped in the hallway leading toward the bedroom.

"What happened to your wall?"

Kai followed his eyes.

"I..."

His words caught in his throat.

The messages were gone.

Every single one.

The drywall still showed uneven patches where paint had peeled away during the night, but the frantic warnings that had covered every inch of plaster had completely disappeared.

Kai hurried over.

"No..."

He pressed a hand against the wall.

Smooth.

Cold.

Blank.

Nothing.

No scratches.

No writing.

No warnings.

He looked toward Luna’s Discord window.

"...Can you still see them?"

A brief silence.

"No."

Her voice sounded hollow.

"They’re gone."

Derek suddenly cursed through the speakers.

"They’re gone on the screenshots too."

Kai turned sharply.

"What?"

"I took screenshots earlier."

"I know I did."

"I’ve still got the files..."

His breathing became uneven.

"They’re blank now."

Kai felt his stomach sink.

The evidence had disappeared.

Again.

Daniel frowned.

"What messages?"

Kai opened his mouth.

Then closed it again.

How did you explain something that no longer existed?

How did you prove something reality itself refused to acknowledge?

He let out a weak laugh.

"You know what?"

"...Never mind."

Daniel studied him for a second but didn’t press further.

Instead, he walked toward the old laptop sitting quietly on the bookshelf.

"You really should throw this thing away."

Kai almost smiled.

"If only it were that easy."

Daniel reached toward the lid.

Kai reacted instantly.

"Don’t!"

Daniel froze.

Their eyes met.

Only then did Kai realize how loudly he’d shouted.

He slowly lowered his hand.

"...Sorry."

"I just..."

Kai couldn’t explain it.

"...don’t touch it."

Daniel studied his face before quietly nodding.

"Fair enough."

The cursor moved.

Neither of them had touched the keyboard.

It clicked into a search bar on its own.

Letters began appearing.

One after another.

Tenant Records

A loading icon spun briefly before a list appeared.

Apartment 7A.

Current tenant.

Previous tenants.

Move-in dates.

Maintenance history.

Everything looked completely normal.

The cursor moved again.

Apartment 7B.

The same.

Ordinary records.

Nothing strange.

Then...

Apartment 7C.

Kai leaned forward.

The page existed.

Unlike photographs.

Unlike hidden messages.

Unlike nearly everything else connected to 7C.

This hadn’t disappeared.

A long list of names filled the screen.

Dozens.

Every tenant had a move-in date.

Every tenant had one thing in common.

The move-out column remained blank.

Kai slowly scrolled.

1998.

Another name.

2001.

Another.

2002. 2003. 2004. 2005. 2006.

The list continued year after year.

Some names repeated.

Some only appeared once.

None of them had ever officially moved out.

His heartbeat became louder with every line.

Finally...

The list reached the bottom.

The final entry read:

Kai Mercer

Move-in: Two Years Ago

Move-out: Pending

His mouth went dry.

There wasn’t a move-out date.

Because...

It hadn’t happened yet.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"...I’ve never seen this."

Kai turned.

"You can read it?"

"Yeah."

"You couldn’t even see 7C before."

"I know."

Daniel frowned harder.

"I don’t understand."

Neither did Kai.

The cursor moved again.

Another file opened automatically.

Not a document.

An audio recording.

A timestamp appeared beneath it.

Recorded: Two Years Ago

Nobody breathed.

Static filled the speakers.

Then...

Kai heard his own voice.

Not from a stream.

Not from a recording he’d made recently.

Older.

More exhausted.

"...Hello?"

Several seconds of silence followed.

Then his own voice returned.

"If somebody finds this..."

A nervous laugh.

"...I don’t know if you’ll remember making it."

Kai felt every muscle in his body lock.

The recording continued.

"My name is Kai Mercer."

"I’m leaving this because..."

He sighed.

A long, defeated sigh.

"...because every morning I forget a little more."

The apartment fell utterly silent.

Even Daniel seemed afraid to breathe.

The recording continued.

"I met someone."

"I don’t know who."

"I can’t remember their face anymore."

Another pause.

"But..."

His older voice cracked.

"...I remember making them a promise."

Kai stared at the speakers as if willing them to stop.

Instead...

His own voice whispered one final sentence.

"If you’re hearing this..."

"...don’t let me forget Luna again."

Click.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Kai slowly looked toward the Discord window.

Luna’s microphone icon was still glowing green.

She hadn’t disconnected.

She was still there.

He waited for her to say something.

Anything.

Instead...

Through the headset...

The only sound that reached him...

Was the quiet, broken sound of someone trying—and failing—not to cry.
