Kai stared at the empty folder.
His reflection looked back at him from the dark laptop screen, pale and exhausted, while the cursor blinked over a directory that had held dozens of files only seconds earlier.
Gone.
Every recording.
Every reminder.
Every photograph.
Every piece of proof.
He didn’t even realize his hands were shaking until the cursor slipped off the tiny Refresh button for the third time.
"No..."
The word escaped before he could stop it.
"No, no, no..."
He searched the Recycle Bin.
Empty.
He searched Recent Files.
Nothing.
He checked hidden folders.
Nothing.
System restore.
Nothing.
It wasn’t as though the files had been deleted.
It was as though they had never existed.
Daniel watched quietly from the other side of the room.
"I know that look."
Kai let out a bitter laugh.
"You do?"
"My computer crashed during tax season once."
Despite everything, Kai huffed out a tired chuckle.
"I don’t think this one’s Windows Update."
"...Probably not."
Daniel folded his arms, still watching the laptop.
"I didn’t see those files disappear."
Kai looked up.
"What?"
"I saw the folder."
"I saw you open it."
"But..."
Daniel frowned.
"I only remember one text document."
Kai’s expression froze.
"You never saw the recordings?"
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"The folder was almost empty."
Kai’s stomach tightened.
The apartment had done it again.
Not everyone experienced the same reality.
Luna finally spoke through the headset.
"I saw them."
"So did Derek."
Derek answered immediately.
"Yeah."
"I even started recording my screen."
A pause.
"...The recording’s gone."
Kai rubbed both hands over his face.
"Fantastic."
"We’ve officially reached the point where evidence edits itself."
He leaned back in the chair and stared toward the ceiling.
His body felt hollow.
Hours of fear.
Hours of searching.
Hours of answers.
Every clue disappeared the instant they finally understood it.
Then...
A thought struck him.
"Luna."
"...Yeah?"
"The recordings disappeared."
"Yes."
"The photos disappeared."
"Yes."
"The writing on the walls disappeared."
Another pause.
Then Luna quietly finished the thought for him.
"But..."
Kai nodded.
"...We didn’t."
Silence filled the apartment.
He slowly looked around.
"I’m still here."
"You’re still here."
"Daniel remembers enough to know something’s wrong."
"Derek remembers."
He frowned.
"So why can it erase files..."
"...but not us?"
Nobody answered.
Not immediately.
Kai stood and began pacing.
It had become instinct.
One lap around the couch.
Past the kitchen.
Back toward the bookshelf.
His thoughts slowly untangled as he walked.
"It can erase history..."
He murmured the words from the recording.
"But not feelings."
He repeated them.
Almost to himself.
"It can’t destroy love."
"It destroys the path that created it."
His footsteps stopped.
His eyes widened.
"Luna."
"I think..."
"I know."
Her voice sounded steadier now.
"I was thinking the same thing."
Kai turned toward the monitor.
"It keeps deleting proof."
"It changes memories."
"It rewrites records."
"But every single time..."
A faint smile appeared.
"...people still end up caring."
Daniel looked between the laptop and Kai.
"I feel like I’m missing ninety percent of this conversation."
"You and me both."
Kai let out a tired breath.
"But think about it."
He gestured toward the laptop.
"If everything could really be erased..."
"...why are any of us still trying?"
Silence.
Then Derek answered quietly.
"Because some things leave marks."
Kai nodded.
"Exactly."
"The details disappear."
"The timeline changes."
"The memories get cut apart."
He placed a hand against his chest.
"But..."
"...something stays."
Nobody argued.
Because all of them knew it was true.
Kai couldn’t explain why he trusted Luna.
She couldn’t explain why she’d stayed.
Daniel couldn’t remember who had helped Kai move in.
Yet he remembered that someone had.
The facts vanished.
The feelings remained.
His phone suddenly buzzed.
This time...
He looked.
Not because he wanted to.
Because the screen lit up with a name.
Luna
Not her username.
Not her Discord tag.
Just—
Luna.
Kai frowned.
She hadn’t texted him.
She was still connected to the call.
He opened the notification anyway.
No message.
Instead...
A draft.
Unsaved.
As though someone had begun typing from his own phone before abandoning it.
Don’t forget her again.
Kai’s heartbeat skipped.
Beneath it...
Another unfinished sentence.
Even if you forget why...
The draft ended there.
No sender.
No timestamp.
No history.
Nothing.
He stared at the screen.
"I..."
His voice barely worked.
"I wrote this."
Luna sounded confused.
"What?"
"I don’t remember writing it."
"But..."
He laughed softly.
"...it sounds like me."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Kai handed him the phone.
Daniel studied the screen.
His expression slowly changed.
"...This isn’t your typing."
Kai frowned.
"What?"
Daniel held the phone beside Kai.
"Look."
Only then did Kai notice.
The draft wasn’t originally typed.
For the briefest instant—
Less than a second—
The phone refreshed.
The English text vanished.
In its place appeared something handwritten.
Black ink.
Messy.
Across lined notebook paper.
Not digital.
Not typed.
Written.
Then it blinked.
The translation returned.
Plain text again.
Kai slowly looked up.
"Did you see that?"
Daniel blinked.
"No."
Luna answered almost immediately.
"...I did."
Neither of them spoke after that.
The apartment suddenly felt too small again.
Too quiet.
Too aware.
Kai slowly turned.
His eyes landed on the bookshelf.
One of the books sat slightly crooked.
He was almost certain it hadn’t been like that earlier.
Maybe it had.
Maybe it hadn’t.
After tonight, he wasn’t willing to trust his memory.
He walked over anyway.
Pulled the book free.
Nothing unusual.
Just an old fantasy novel he’d bought years ago.
The cover was faded.
Several pages were dog-eared.
As he slid it back into place, his fingertips brushed against something hidden behind it.
Paper.
Folded.
He paused.
Carefully, he reached behind the shelf.
His fingers closed around a thick envelope.
Yellowed with age.
Dust clung to the edges.
It had been hidden there for a long time.
Long before tonight.
Long before the laptop awakened.
Long before he ever knew what Apartment 7C really was.
His name was written across the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
In his own handwriting.
Kai simply stared.
His pulse thundered in his ears.
Unlike the disappearing files...
Unlike the changing photographs...
Unlike the recordings that erased themselves...
This felt different.
Old.
Real.
Physical.
Something he had hidden with his own hands.
Something the apartment...
Had never found.
Or perhaps...
Had never been able to erase.
Very carefully, Kai slipped a finger beneath the sealed flap.
The old glue cracked softly.
The envelope opened.
Inside...
He felt the edge of a folded letter.
And beneath it...
The corner of a photograph.
