The little silver key sat in Kai’s palm.
It wasn’t anything special at first glance.
Old.
Slightly tarnished.
The kind of key that belonged to an apartment built decades ago, back when locks were simple and everything didn’t need a digital code or a fingerprint scanner.
Yet it felt strangely heavy.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Kai turned it over slowly between his fingers.
The faded blue tag attached beneath it moved gently.
For Apartment 7C.
Those four words felt heavier than the metal itself.
Daniel’s expression changed the instant he read them.
"...That’s impossible."
Kai looked up.
"What?"
"There isn’t a key for 7C."
Daniel stepped closer, careful not to touch it.
"I’ve worked here for twelve years."
His eyes stayed locked on the small silver key.
"When I started, management told me every key for that apartment had been destroyed."
He frowned.
"They even changed the master system."
"No employee has access."
Kai looked back down.
The key sat there innocently.
Almost mocking them.
"...Apparently someone does."
Nobody had an answer.
The apartment fell quiet again.
Outside, the officers continued talking among themselves. Their voices drifted faintly through the door, reminding Kai that the rest of the world was still moving.
Cars rolled past outside.
Someone laughed in the parking lot.
A dog barked somewhere in the distance.
Morning had fully arrived.
And somehow that made everything worse.
The sunlight creeping through the blinds should have made him feel safer.
Instead, it felt like daylight had wandered into a place it wasn’t supposed to reach.
Like the darkness from last night hadn’t left.
It was simply waiting.
Kai looked back at the final page of the letter.
His handwriting looked different here.
Calmer.
More controlled.
Almost like the person who wrote it had already accepted what was coming.
He swallowed and began reading aloud.
"If you’re holding the key..."
His voice was quieter.
"Don’t use it because you’re curious."
Kai paused.
"Curiosity is how I almost died."
Daniel immediately looked uncomfortable.
"...Maybe we shouldn’t keep reading."
Kai ignored him.
The page continued.
"Use it because you’ve run out of other choices."
The words felt heavier than the ones before.
Because Kai knew something.
Past Kai wasn’t the type of person who wrote dramatic warnings for no reason.
If he was telling himself not to be curious...
There was a reason.
Kai continued.
"Apartment 7C isn’t empty."
A pause.
"It also isn’t occupied."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
Kai looked at him.
"I was hoping you knew."
Daniel didn’t respond.
Kai kept reading.
"You’re going to want an explanation."
"I don’t have one."
For the first time in several minutes, Kai smiled.
Small.
Tired.
"That’s definitely me."
Luna let out the smallest laugh through the headset.
"You always complain before giving bad news."
Kai looked toward his monitor.
"I do not."
"You absolutely do."
Even Daniel chuckled quietly.
The moment was brief.
Almost normal.
Almost enough to make Kai forget what was waiting behind the hidden door.
Almost.
He looked back down.
"The apartment isn’t where it should be."
His expression slowly changed.
"Sometimes it’s on the seventh floor."
"Sometimes it isn’t."
"Sometimes it exists at all."
Daniel’s smile disappeared.
Kai continued.
"Never assume yesterday’s layout is today’s layout."
The manager stared at the wall.
The wall where a door that had never existed was now waiting.
"...What?"
Kai didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t know either.
He kept reading.
"If you find the door..."
"Don’t enter immediately."
"Stand outside for exactly sixty seconds."
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
"Sixty?"
The letter continued.
"If something inside already knows you’re there..."
"Leave."
The room seemed to grow colder.
Not because the temperature changed.
Because everyone understood the implication.
Something inside could know.
Something inside could be waiting.
Kai lowered the paper slightly.
Then continued.
"If nothing happens..."
"Unlock the door."
"Walk inside."
"Close it behind you."
Kai stopped.
His eyes narrowed.
"...Behind me?"
Luna immediately spoke.
"No."
Kai looked toward the monitor.
"No?"
"I don’t like that."
Kai almost laughed.
"You don’t like any of this."
"I really don’t like that."
Her voice carried genuine fear.
"You don’t close unknown doors behind yourself."
Kai nodded slowly.
"...Fair point."
The letter continued.
"I know what you’re thinking."
"Past me is an idiot."
Kai couldn’t help laughing.
"I was literally thinking that."
Luna laughed too.
"I know."
Daniel looked between them.
"You two are weird."
Kai lifted the paper.
"He knows me."
"You are him."
"Exactly."
The smile disappeared as he reached the next sentence.
"I promise there’s a reason."
Kai’s heartbeat slowed.
Because those words sounded like something he would write.
A promise to himself.
The final paragraph was shorter.
Almost rushed.
"Whatever happens..."
"Don’t let Luna come inside."
Kai stopped breathing for a second.
"No matter what she says."
"No matter what you hear."
"Protect her."
The paper lowered.
The smile was gone completely.
The headset stayed silent.
"Luna."
No answer.
"Luna."
A few seconds passed.
Then finally—
"I’m here."
Her voice sounded distant.
"You already knew."
Kai frowned.
"No."
"But..."
She took a shaky breath.
"I think part of me expected it."
Kai folded the letter carefully.
"I’m not leaving you."
"I know."
"I’m serious."
"I know."
He looked down at the key.
"So why would I protect you from the apartment?"
"I don’t know."
Her voice cracked slightly.
"I don’t remember enough."
A pause.
"But..."
Her breathing steadied.
"I trust you."
Then she laughed softly.
"...Apparently Past You trusted me too."
Kai placed the letter back inside the envelope.
The photograph followed.
He held the silver key up toward the morning light.
A tiny reflection flashed across the ceiling.
A single beam.
Thin.
Bright.
For one brief second...
It landed on the wall opposite the bookshelf.
Kai frowned.
"...Was that always there?"
Daniel followed the light.
"What?"
"The wall."
A narrow vertical line ran from the floor almost to the ceiling.
Perfectly straight.
Perfectly hidden beneath layers of paint.
Kai slowly approached.
He ran his fingers along it.
Wood.
Not drywall.
A door.
His pulse began climbing.
"This..."
His voice dropped.
"This wasn’t here yesterday."
Daniel stepped beside him.
"I’ve been in this apartment dozens of times."
His face had gone pale.
"I swear..."
"There has never been a door there."
Kai slid the old silver key into the hidden lock.
It fit perfectly.
No resistance.
No hesitation.
Like it had been waiting.
He didn’t turn it.
Not yet.
The entire apartment seemed to hold its breath.
Then—
From the other side of the hidden door...
Someone knocked.
Once.
Softly.
Three slow taps.
Kai froze.
A familiar voice came through the wood.
Warm.
Gentle.
Almost relieved.
"Kai..."
His own voice.
"...I’m so glad you finally remembered."
