The silver ring struck the hardwood floor with a soft metallic ting.
It spun once.
Then again.
The tiny band caught the morning light as it circled faster before gradually slowing, wobbling once against the floorboards and finally settling beside Kai’s shoe.
No one moved to pick it up.
The apartment had become impossibly still.
Even the building itself seemed to be waiting.
Kai stared at the empty space where the older version of himself had vanished.
Just...
Gone.
No flash of light.
No final goodbye.
No dramatic sacrifice.
One moment he had been standing there.
The next...
Only the ring remained.
"...Kai?"
Luna’s voice was barely audible through the restored Discord call.
He didn’t answer.
His eyes refused to leave the place where the older Kai had disappeared.
Daniel was the first to move.
Slowly, almost cautiously, he bent down and picked up the ring between two fingers.
His eyebrows lifted.
"...It’s warm."
Kai finally looked at him.
"What?"
Daniel turned the ring over in his hand.
"It shouldn’t be."
His expression grew stranger.
"It feels like..."
He hesitated.
"...like somebody was wearing it a second ago."
He handed it over carefully.
Kai accepted it.
The silver rested against his palm.
Warm.
Not painfully so.
Comfortably.
Like something that had been carried every day for years.
His thumb brushed across the inside of the band.
The engraving reflected the sunlight spilling through the shattered windows.
Until you remember me again.
Kai frowned.
"...Again."
He whispered the word to himself.
Not remember me.
Remember me again.
His stomach tightened.
There was something about those words that refused to let him go.
"Luna."
"...Yeah?"
He struggled to explain the strange feeling growing inside him.
"Did something..."
He searched for the right words.
"...disappear?"
Silence.
Several seconds passed before she answered.
"I..."
Her voice became uncertain.
"...Maybe."
Kai slowly looked around the apartment.
Everything appeared exactly the same.
The broken windows.
The scattered glass.
The overturned chair.
The hidden entrance leading into Apartment 7C.
Nothing obvious had changed.
Yet...
Something had.
He couldn’t explain it.
The air felt...
Lighter.
Like an invisible weight pressing against his chest had finally eased.
Daniel frowned.
"The air."
Kai turned toward him.
"What?"
Daniel inhaled slowly.
"It doesn’t feel..."
He paused.
"...heavy anymore."
Kai realized he was right.
For the first time since this nightmare had begun...
Breathing felt natural.
The apartment no longer seemed alive.
It no longer felt like unseen eyes were watching every movement.
Then—
A loud crack echoed from Apartment 7C.
All three of them looked toward the hidden doorway.
The black door.
It was moving.
Not opening.
Closing.
Slowly.
Silently.
No one touched it.
No wind pushed it.
It simply began swinging shut on its own.
The pale hands gripping the frame twitched.
One by one...
Their impossibly long fingers released their hold.
They disappeared back into the darkness without resistance.
Without struggle.
Almost...
Reluctantly.
As though whatever existed beyond the threshold had chosen to retreat.
Kai stepped closer.
Cautiously.
The impossible hallway had changed again.
The endless corridor was gone.
The countless doors had vanished.
The shifting walls no longer twisted into impossible shapes.
Only a short hallway remained.
At the end stood the familiar black door.
Closed halfway now.
Silent.
The older Kai was gone.
The distant silhouette was gone.
Everything felt...
Quieter.
Then the ancient voice returned.
Not from the hallway.
Not from the apartment.
From everywhere.
"One bargain fulfilled."
Kai stopped walking.
His pulse quickened.
The voice continued.
"One remains."
The black door shuddered.
Then, with one final motion...
It closed completely.
The latch clicked.
A simple sound.
Almost ordinary.
The instant it shut...
Life returned.
The apartment lights flickered back on.
The refrigerator hummed.
Kai’s laptop rebooted with its familiar startup sound.
The television flashed before settling on a morning news broadcast.
Outside, a car horn blared.
Someone laughed on the sidewalk.
The ordinary sounds of the world rushed back all at once.
Daniel blinked several times.
"...Is..."
He looked around the apartment.
"...Is it over?"
Nobody answered.
Kai slowly stepped toward Apartment 7C.
"Luna."
Daniel caught his arm.
"What are you doing?"
"I need to know."
"The letter said—"
"I know what the letter said."
Kai gently pulled free.
Nothing happened when he crossed the threshold.
No freezing cold.
No whispers.
No impossible pressure squeezing his lungs.
Apartment 7C was...
Normal.
Dust coated every surface.
Old furniture sat beneath white sheets.
A grandfather clock stood frozen at exactly 3:17.
The wallpaper peeled away from the walls in faded strips.
The place looked abandoned.
Like nobody had lived there for decades.
Then Kai noticed the photographs.
Hundreds of them.
They covered every wall from floor to ceiling.
His footsteps slowed.
He approached the nearest one.
His breath caught.
It was him.
Luna.
Daniel.
Derek.
Standing together outside the apartment building.
Everyone smiling.
Everyone alive.
The handwritten date beneath the photograph read:
May 18th
Three years ago.
Kai frowned.
"There..."
He slowly turned in a circle.
"There are hundreds."
Every wall told another story.
Birthday parties.
Livestream celebrations.
Movie nights stretched across the living room floor.
Pizza boxes stacked beside the couch.
Christmas mornings.
New Year’s fireworks.
Rooftop sunsets.
Road trips.
Three entire years.
Moments that should have existed.
Moments nobody remembered.
None of the photographs were scratched.
None had faces torn away.
Nothing had been erased.
Luna whispered through the headset.
"...Those are ours."
Kai nodded slowly.
"Yeah."
Then something else caught his attention.
Every photograph had five people.
Not four.
Kai.
Luna.
Daniel.
Derek.
And...
Someone else.
A young man with messy black hair.
Tired eyes.
A relaxed smile.
Sometimes he stood beside Kai with an arm draped over his shoulder.
Sometimes he held the camera.
Sometimes he laughed harder than anyone else.
He appeared in every single picture.
Kai frowned.
"...Who..."
Nobody answered.
Daniel stared.
"I’ve never seen him before."
Luna sounded just as confused.
"I don’t know him..."
Even Derek, visible in the photographs, seemed unable to trigger a memory.
Kai stepped closer.
The stranger’s smile...
It was familiar.
Not because he’d seen the photographs.
Because...
It looked exactly like the older Kai’s.
His heartbeat skipped.
The silver ring in his hand grew warmer.
Not hot.
Alive.
Then...
A memory surfaced.
Not of Luna.
Not of Apartment 7C.
A name.
Spoken countless times.
Laughed together.
Shouted across rooftops.
Whispered during impossible nights.
His lips moved before he consciously realized he remembered it.
"...Elias."
The instant the name left his mouth...
Every photograph on the walls trembled.
Not violently.
Gently.
Almost like breathing.
The old apartment seemed to exhale after holding its breath for years.
Somewhere...
Far deeper inside the building...
A single voice whispered so softly it was almost lost beneath the silence.
"...Thank you."
