The field exploded.

Not with fire.

Not with light.

With memories.

Millions of fragments burst outward like shattered glass, scattering through the endless void.

Each piece carried something.

A face.

A voice.

A life.

Countless moments that had once belonged to someone, somewhere, now breaking apart and drifting into nothingness.

Kai reached forward without thinking.

The little boy stood only a few steps away.

The First Witness.

The child who had carried the weight of countless forgotten lives.

Their hands reached toward each other.

Almost touching.

Almost.

Then the world broke apart between them.

"Kai!"

Luna’s voice pierced through the chaos.

"Duck!"

Then Daniel.

"Move!"

Kai barely had time to react.

The memories swallowed everything.

Sound.

Light.

Space.

Then—

Darkness.

Kai slammed into something hard.

The impact knocked every bit of air from his lungs.

For several seconds, he couldn’t understand what had happened.

His body refused to move.

His ears rang violently.

His vision blurred.

He coughed, rolling onto his side as something cold scraped against his palms.

Concrete.

His breathing slowed.

Concrete?

He frowned.

Not grass.

Not the endless void.

Concrete.

"Kai!"

A pair of hands grabbed his shoulders.

Daniel.

His face was the first thing Kai managed to focus on.

Relief flooded Daniel’s expression.

"Thank God."

Kai blinked slowly.

His mind struggled to catch up with reality.

"...Where..."

He looked around.

The elevator.

The brass walls.

The impossible descent.

Mrs. Ashcroft.

Gone.

All of it.

Instead...

He was lying in the hallway outside Apartment 7A.

Morning sunlight poured through the shattered windows, cutting across the broken glass scattered across the floor.

The building looked exactly as it had before.

Damaged.

Silent.

Normal.

Across the hall, Apartment 7C stood open.

Waiting.

Exactly where it had always been.

Kai stared.

"...How?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don’t know."

He swallowed.

"You just..."

His eyes moved over Kai carefully.

"...collapsed."

"For almost a minute."

Kai slowly pushed himself upright.

A sharp headache pulsed behind his eyes.

Then he remembered.

The field.

The boy.

The notebook.

"The boy."

Daniel’s expression changed.

Confusion replaced concern.

"What boy?"

Kai froze.

A cold feeling settled in his chest.

"No..."

He stared at Daniel.

"You don’t remember him?"

Daniel shook his head.

"There wasn’t anyone else."

The words hit harder than Kai expected.

Immediately, he reached into his pockets.

Nothing.

His heart sank.

Then—

His fingers brushed against something.

Leather.

Kai stopped breathing.

Slowly, he pulled it out.

The notebook.

Old.

Worn.

The same one the little boy had handed him.

The same notebook that had contained thousands of names.

Kai opened it.

Every page was blank.

No names.

No stories.

No memories.

Nothing.

Until the very last page.

Only one sentence remained.

Wake them up.

Kai stared at the words.

The crossed-out names were gone.

The forgotten stories were gone.

Everything the First Witness had protected had disappeared.

Except that message.

His grip tightened around the notebook.

"It wasn’t a dream."

Daniel looked at him carefully.

"I never said it was."

Static suddenly crackled through the headset.

"Kai?"

Luna.

The sound of her voice immediately pulled him back.

"I’m here."

"You disappeared."

Kai frowned.

"What?"

"For almost a minute."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"You stopped answering."

A pause.

"I thought..."

She hesitated.

"...I thought I’d lost you again."

Kai closed his eyes.

For a moment, he allowed himself to feel the fear behind her words.

Not fear of the building.

Not fear of the creature.

Fear of losing him.

"I’m okay."

The words came out quietly.

But even he knew they weren’t completely true.

He wasn’t okay.

Not after what he’d seen.

Not after what he’d learned.

But he was alive.

For now.

A faint clicking sound echoed from inside Apartment 7C.

Kai immediately opened his eyes.

The grandfather clock.

Its pendulum had begun moving.

Tick.

Tock.

Tick.

Tock.

The sound filled the apartment.

Slow.

Steady.

Wrong.

The clock that had been frozen for years was alive again.

Kai looked at the hands.

The time was no longer 3:17.

It now displayed—

8:00.

Exactly.

Kai slowly stood.

His legs still felt weak.

Daniel followed his gaze.

"What does that mean?"

Kai stared at the clock.

"I don’t know."

But deep down...

He had a feeling.

Everything had been leading toward this.

The eighth floor.

The eighth witness.

Eight o’clock.

None of it was random.

Kai stepped carefully back into Apartment 7C.

The photographs still covered the walls.

Elias smiled from every frame.

A brother he had forgotten.

A brother he somehow still missed.

But something had changed.

Mrs. Ashcroft was gone.

Her grocery bag.

Gone.

The Polaroids.

Gone.

Only one thing remained.

A cassette player sat on the small coffee table in the center of the room.

Kai stopped.

He was certain it hadn’t been there before.

Beside it was a single cassette.

A white label.

Faded handwriting.

Loop 001

Kai’s heartbeat quickened.

Not Loop 944.

Not Loop 327.

Not Loop 712.

One.

The beginning.

The very first failure.

Daniel slowly approached.

"You think it works?"

Kai picked up the cassette.

The plastic felt fragile.

Old.

Like it had been handled hundreds of times by someone desperately trying to leave a message behind.

He turned it over.

Three words were written on the back in black marker.

Don’t trust me.

Silence filled the room.

Kai stared.

"...What?"

Daniel frowned.

"What?"

Kai handed him the cassette.

Daniel looked down.

His expression shifted.

"It says..."

He hesitated.

"...Play immediately."

Kai blinked.

"No."

He took the cassette back.

The words had changed.

Now they read:

Only Kai should listen.

Daniel stared.

"That’s..."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I swear it just said something else."

Kai’s heartbeat increased.

The message wasn’t changing.

It was adapting.

The cassette wasn’t showing them words.

It was choosing what each person needed to see.

The player clicked.

By itself.

The tape door slowly opened.

Waiting.

Inviting.

A choice.

Always a choice.

Luna’s voice came through the headset.

"...Kai."

He looked toward his phone.

"I have a really bad feeling."

"So do I."

"You don’t have to play it."

Kai looked down at the cassette.

A tired smile crossed his face.

"I know."

Silence followed.

Then Luna spoke again.

Her voice was softer.

But stronger.

"If you decide to..."

A pause.

"...I’ll stay on the line."

Kai looked at the cassette one more time.

Loop 001.

The first loop.

The first failure.

The beginning of everything.

Slowly...

He placed the cassette into the player.

Click.

It locked into place.

Then—

The Play button pressed itself.

Static filled the room.

For several seconds...

Nothing.

Only white noise.

Only the sound of a message waiting to be heard.

Then...

A voice.

Familiar.

Older.

Exhausted.

Broken.

His own.

"If you’re hearing this..."

A long pause followed.

Kai felt every muscle in his body tense.

The recording continued.

"...then I made the worst mistake in human history."

The blood drained from Kai’s face.

The voice on the tape breathed softly.

"My name is Kai Mercer."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

Then came the words that changed everything.

"...and I created the Author."
