"I’m sorry, Little Ai." He kissed her ear and said, "Can you forgive this idiot? I’m not good enough, which is why
you’ve suffered so many grievances. I must have let you down completely, right?"
"When you got hurt, why didn’t you call me? When you were bullied in the hospital alone, why didn’t you think of calling me? Why did you run off to Toronto all by yourself? Even with an injured leg, you can’t stay put. What if I hadn’t found you? Were you planning to let our home in Toronto wither away all by yourself? What a fool you are. Do you know I searched the entire world for you? I was going crazy not being able to find you."
Little Ai could hardly believe it. She didn’t know if she was in hell or heaven at that moment. It all felt so unreal because Wubai hadn’t spoken to her like this for such a long time. Then suddenly she thought of something: "The chi... child... Wubai, our child... I couldn’t save the child..."
She started to speak, her voice breaking off and choking with sobs. She trembled, crying.
Wubai wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes over and over: "Don’t cry, the child’s still in your belly. I’ll protect you both, don’t cry. Leave everything to me. I won’t let anything happen to our child. Little Ai, trust me, you know how capable your Wubai is. If I say I’ll protect you both, I absolutely will protect you both!"
Little Ai just cried, just cried, for a long time, saying, "I left the most important thing in your house."
"What thing?" Wubai couldn’t understand what she meant by this seemingly random statement.
Little Ai wiped her own tears, "The red box. I moved out in such a hurry, I forgot to take it."
"Silly, I told you not to move out. As soon as you’re better, I’ll take you home. What’s this ’your house’, ’my house’? It’s our home." Wubai felt a heartache, listening to her words, his heart ached.
"Please go get it for me," Little Ai said, her eyes red.
Wubai frowned, "Now?"
She nodded heavily, "I have something important to do now. Can you go get it?"
Wubai couldn’t refuse her. He called someone to come and watch her, then drove back home to find the box she mentioned. Actually, he often saw that box. It had accompanied her for many years, but she never allowed him to touch it. It seemed so mysterious, like her treasure.
Wubai got the box but didn’t rush back to the hospital. Instead, he packed a few of her clothes, and also some of his own, planning to stay overnight at the hospital. So, he packed some daily necessities as well.
He packed a large bag and put the box inside.
Before zipping it up, Wubai paused, opened the box, and took a look at what was inside.
Inside the box were three notebooks, some tickets to tourist attractions, some plane tickets, movie tickets, concert tickets, and a variety of random things.
Wubai flipped through them and came across a red notebook. He vaguely remembered it, it seemed like something he had bought for her. He opened the notebook, and it was filled with dense writing in her handwriting, her notes.
On the first page, carefully written, were four words—"Memories of Love!"
On the second page, there were rows of short dialogues.
Wubai flipped through many pages, finally making out that those dialogues were the texts they had sent each other over the years.
She had actually copied down all the texts they had sent each other over so many years, transcribing them into this thick notebook.
