Chapter 118: Chapter 118: I Have No Manners
"Dad, I’m your daughter too. You’ve favored my sister since we were little, and now you’re favoring her children. Have you ever thought about Mia?"
Sienna Powell wiped her tears and continued crying, "My sister’s life is already countless times better than mine. Can’t you just feel a little sorry for me?"
Mr. Powell expressionlessly took a sip of his tea. He raised his eyes to look at his grown-up elder daughter, who was crying so pitifully, then glanced at his granddaughter sitting beside her, looking aggrieved like a delicate little flower.
"Yes, your sister married well and is living well. But didn’t you choose your own path?"
Sienna Powell’s crying faltered. Just as she was about to retort, Mr. Powell continued, "Back then, the Rhodes family had their eyes on your sister. I was against it from the start. That Julian Rhodes is no decent man. But you? You saw how powerful the Rhodes family was and threw yourself at him, pledging your life to him in secret. Then you accused me of playing favorites. I was against the match, but after what you did, I had no choice but to agree. Now that your life has gone south, you’re back to saying I’m biased?"
Looking at his daughter acting like this, Mr. Powell felt a headache coming on.
Seeing Sienna Powell struck speechless by Mr. Powell’s words, Mia Rhodes silently poked her, reminding her not to forget their main objective.
But who was Mr. Powell? A veteran of the business world for many years, he could see through such petty schemes and calculations as clear as day. The moment Mia Rhodes raised her hand, Mr. Powell understood. His elder daughter was greedy but stupid. This granddaughter, however, had inherited both his daughter’s foolishness and the Rhodes family’s cunning.
Ethan Powell, of course, saw it too. He scoffed, bent down to pick up a cigarette box from the table, and lit one for himself. He watched the mother and daughter put on their show as if he were watching a play.
Prompted by her daughter, Sienna Powell finally remembered the main reason for their visit. She stood up, sat down next to Mr. Powell, and hugged his arm, saying coquettishly, "Dad, I actually came this time to ask you to step in and help me divorce Julian Rhodes. You have no idea. Even with the Rhodes family in its current state, he’s actually cheating on me. He even has a child with his mistress."
Seeing Mr. Powell remain as unshakable as a mountain, as if he hadn’t heard a word she said, she continued, "He even wants to ask Mia and me for money to support his mistress."
A young granddaughter acting cute might be adorable. But his grown daughter acting cute, especially when her intentions were so glaringly obvious, only made Mr. Powell feel uncomfortable.
He said coldly, "You made your choice. You bear the consequences."
"Dad!" Sienna Powell stared at Mr. Powell in disbelief. "Are you even my real father? How could you say something like that?"
"If I weren’t your real father, you wouldn’t even be able to set foot in the Powell family’s home." Mr. Powell shook off her hand, stood up, and looked down at his disappointing elder daughter. "When you were little," he said, his voice filled with disappointment, "you and your sister were raised by your mother and me. We never played favorites between you two. Your older brother was the same. He was afraid you’d compete, so he treated you both equally."
"Even though you loved playing those petty mind games as a child, your brother, no matter how much he disliked it, always bought you both the same things." Mr. Powell shook his head, his gaze on her growing darker. "I wonder if we brought the wrong baby home from the hospital. You were both raised the same way. Your sister has been sensible since she was a child. Even though she’s a few years younger, she always gave in to you. But you don’t have a shred of gratitude. Instead, you grew jealous, even hateful, just because she was a better student and more sensible."
"And now, look at the girl you’ve raised." Mr. Powell’s gaze fell on Mia Rhodes. Mia stared at Mr. Powell in disbelief as he continued, "Years ago, when Lynn wasn’t around, she would badmouth Lynn to my face, both overtly and subtly. She instigated Aiden Powell to warn Lynn not to see me. And now she’s provoking you to come to the Powell family and beg. She’s truly inherited all of your and the Rhodes family’s worst traits."
Mia Rhodes’s eyes reddened with anxiety. She stood up and tried to explain, "Grandfather, I didn’t—"
"This old man isn’t blind yet. No, wait, for the past few years, I might as well have been. To think I believed you time and time again." Mr. Powell cut her off and, with his hands behind his back, prepared to leave.
Sienna Powell was frozen in place. Seeing her useless mother, Mia Rhodes had no choice but to anxiously sit beside her and whisper a reminder, "Mom, hurry up and beg Grandfather. Ask him to help me. Otherwise, I really won’t be able to survive in the entertainment industry."
Sienna Powell numbly nodded. Looking at Mr. Powell’s departing back, she mustered her courage and shouted, "Dad, if you won’t help me, then please help Mia! She’s being slandered and insulted by people online, and an investigation revealed that Mr. Sterling of the Sterling family is behind it! I heard that Mr. Sterling is with that damn girl Lynn Winslow, so this must be that damn Lynn’s—"
"Shut your mouth!" Mr. Powell spun around and glared furiously at Sienna Powell. He gritted his teeth and said, "As an elder, how dare you curse a junior like that—an innocent junior, no less. Have you no shame?"
Sienna Powell hadn’t expected her father to get so angry. Ever since they had arrived, he had been expressionless, his words cold and distant. But now, because of Lynn Winslow, he was scolding them so harshly.
"Dad, am I wrong? Why would Mr. Sterling target Mia for no reason? Someone must have put him up to it."
Mr. Powell’s fists were clenched tightly. If he weren’t so old, and if his elder daughter weren’t a grown woman, he would have definitely marched over and taught her a harsh lesson.
"No one put me up to it." Ian Sterling shook off the hand of Lynn Winslow, who didn’t seem the least bit angry, and strode into the living room from the entryway with a cold expression.
He looked down at Sienna Powell and Mia Rhodes, the smile on his lips full of contempt and ridicule, as if he were looking at ants.
"I simply can’t stand the way Mia Rhodes pretends to be a pure, innocent maiden." Ian Sterling crossed his arms, raising an eyebrow with a smirk. "I’m not exactly a well-mannered person. When I can’t stand someone, I say it to their face."
Besides, his anger level had already multiplied countless times the moment he heard Sienna Powell insult Lynn Winslow.
"A woman full of petty schemes, yet she insists on pretending to know nothing. People in the know would think she’s just feigning innocence, but those who don’t would think she’s an idiot, as if born without a brain."
Sienna Powell couldn’t take it anymore. She stood up, pointed a trembling finger at Ian Sterling, and stammered, "What did you say? Is this how the Sterling Family raises its children? To teach you to be so disrespectful to your elders?"
Ian Sterling glanced coldly at the finger she had shoved in his face and took a step back. The bodyguard beside him, moving in perfect sync, stepped forward and grabbed her finger. In a flash, a scream echoed throughout the Powell family home.
Sienna Powell’s finger was now bent downwards at an unnatural angle. She cradled her hand, screaming and crying. Seeing this, Mia Rhodes couldn’t believe that Ian Sterling would actually lay a hand on the eldest daughter of the Powell family in their own home.
She rushed forward to support Sienna Powell and exclaimed in terror, "What are you doing?! This is the Powell family’s home!"
Ian Sterling couldn’t be bothered to look at her. He turned and held out his hand to Lynn Winslow, who was standing a short distance away, watching the show.
