Chapter 90: Chapter 90: This Cat Is Super Protective
After Lynn Winslow saw Zoe Sterling off, Mrs. Sterling and the chef went to the supermarket, and Lynn went upstairs by herself.
She sat on the edge of the bed and coaxed him, "Why were you so rude to Zoe?"
She had no biological siblings and wasn’t close with her cousins, so she thought it was wonderful to have a sister like Zoe show so much concern. She couldn’t quite understand Ian Sterling’s attitude.
"She came here to laugh at my expense. Why should I be nice to her?"
He’d been like that since he was a kid. As long as you didn’t provoke him, he’d be pleasant enough, but once you crossed him, he’d give anyone the cold shoulder.
Lynn Winslow flicked the back of his head with her finger and told him, "Just keep lying still. If it really starts to hurt, let me know."
"Where are you going? Are you going to see Zane Lancaster?" Ian Sterling blinked, grabbing her hand and tightening his grip, refusing to let go.
Lynn Winslow said helplessly, "I’m not going anywhere, and I’m not going to see Zane Lancaster. I’m staying right here with you."
Only then did Ian Sterling relax and let go of her hand, his eyes fixed on Lynn Winslow. But when he saw her about to leave with Kiki in her arms, he quickly asked, "Where are you going?"
"I heard Mrs. Sterling come back. I’m going to see what they’re making for lunch."
"Then why are you taking Kiki with you?" Ian Sterling’s eyes were filled with suspicion.
Lynn Winslow sighed. "I’m afraid he’ll jump on your back and make your injury worse."
Ian Sterling pressed his lips together. "Fine."
Lynn Winslow carried Kiki downstairs. Mrs. Sterling and the chef were carrying several bags. Seeing Lynn, Mrs. Sterling said, "I bought some fresh bones at the supermarket. I’ll have the chef make a stew for Finn later. I don’t know if it will help, but at least it’s nutritious."
Lynn Winslow nodded and followed Mrs. Sterling into the kitchen, where Mrs. Sterling then made them two glasses of juice.
Just as she was about to take them upstairs, the doorbell rang. Lynn Winslow glanced over, puzzled. When she saw Mrs. Sterling coming out of the kitchen, Lynn said, "You’re busy. I’ll get it."
Mrs. Sterling went back to the kitchen, and Lynn went out of the villa alone. To her surprise, three men were standing at the gate.
When Kenneth Keller saw her, he waved with a broad smile. "We’re here to see Finn. We got the address from Zoe."
Jasper Jennings was smiling too. Only Zachary Quincy still looked like Lynn Winslow owed him money.
Lynn Winslow glanced back up toward the room before stepping forward to open the gate.
They were not polite in the least. Once inside the villa, they immediately made for the stairs. The enormous Kiki stood on the steps, hissing and baring his teeth at them, forcing the three to halt and wait for Lynn.
Lynn motioned to Mrs. Sterling, who had poked her head out, not to worry. She then walked to the stairs, scooped Kiki into her arms, and said to the men, "Let’s go."
She pursed her lips, hesitated for a moment, then asked tentatively, "Could you guys try not to provoke him?"
Jasper Jennings raised an eyebrow and casually agreed, "Sure. Don’t worry."
Lynn couldn’t feel reassured, but there was nothing she could do. Now that they were here, could she really kick them out? Perhaps she could have before, but ever since she learned about Ian Sterling’s depression—and that these men and his family had been the ones to pull him back—she couldn’t bring herself to be harsh with them.
Ian Sterling was lying on his stomach, squinting drowsily at a movie playing on the rolling TV stand Lynn had brought over earlier. When he heard several sets of footsteps and the sound of the door opening, he looked toward the entrance.
His expression changed in an instant, his face turning icy. "What are you doing here?" he demanded.
Kenneth Keller instinctively wanted to tease him, but Jasper Jennings nudged his arm. Remembering Lynn was still there, Kenneth forced a smile and asked, "Finn, we were worried about you, so we came to see how you’re doing. Are you okay?"
Ian Sterling frowned, thinking there was something wrong with Kenneth Keller. "I’m fine," he said awkwardly.
"Oh, good. You scared us to death." Kenneth Keller patted his chest, his feigned concern so phony it made Ian Sterling want to puke in his face.
"Can you act normal for once?" he couldn’t help but call him out.
Kenneth Keller’s lips twitched. He desperately wanted to mock him. ’So I can’t be nice, and I can’t be mean, either?’
Seeing the four men together, Lynn felt a bit awkward. She decided to go downstairs to see how Mrs. Sterling was doing with lunch and to ask them to make some extra food.
The moment she left, the three of them finally let loose, their rapid-fire banter making Ian Sterling’s expression turn thunderous.
"Finn, this won’t get in the way of your... happy life in the future, will it?" Jasper Jennings said, putting heavy emphasis on the word "happy."
Before Ian Sterling could say anything, Zachary Quincy chimed in, "How can you ask that? Is our Finn that fragile?"
It sounded like he was defending him, but he was actually just mocking him. Ian Sterling opened his mouth, but before he could speak, Kenneth Keller continued, "Sigh. Let’s hope not. Otherwise, it would be such a shame."
Ian Sterling gritted his teeth and squeezed the words out: "A shame for what?"
"A shame you won’t be able to enjoy a happy life, of course! What else?" Jasper Jennings roared with laughter and reached out to touch Ian Sterling’s back.
Kiki, who had stayed in the room and was nestled on the inner side of the bed, shot up the moment he saw Jasper Jennings reach out. Fur bristling, he let out a low, warning hiss.
Jasper Jennings jumped in fright. The cat was just so enormous; if it really attacked, it would definitely leave a few scars.
"This cat is so protective," Zachary Quincy hissed, also taking a step back.
He’d been scratched by a cat as a child and had been afraid of them ever since.
Ian Sterling smugly stroked Kiki’s head. The cat obediently lay down beside him, but its eyes remained fixed on the three men, its tail thudding loudly against the bed.
Sure enough, the three of them didn’t dare come any closer. Two sat on the sofa, and one leaned against a low cabinet, speaking to him from a distance.
"But seriously, when will you be better?" Kenneth Keller asked, frowning with his arms crossed. "Are you sure there won’t be any permanent damage?"
"I’ll be fine after a few days of lying down. It’s just a dislocation, no permanent damage." Since they were being serious, Ian Sterling became serious too. He glanced toward the door and said in a low voice, "You guys need to keep an eye on Zane Lancaster for me. Don’t let him use my immobility as a chance to steal my girl."
Zachary Quincy propped his fingers against his forehead and said flatly, "He came here to steal your girl. He’d be trying to steal her even if you weren’t injured."
"You son of a—" Ian Sterling started, trying to push himself up on his elbows. Jasper Jennings quickly cut in, "Kidding, kidding! We’ll keep an eye on him for you. Besides, you’re living here with Lynn now. How’s he supposed to get to her?"
"Just keep a close watch for me. I have a feeling his sudden arrival in Quartos isn’t that simple." Ian Sterling’s eyes were as dark as ink, his brow tightly furrowed. The expressions of the other three men gradually grew serious as well.
