Chapter 2008: Chapter 2005: Silencing Witnesses?
As soon as he parted from Mu Yun, the unique fragrance disappeared. It seemed that you had to be very close to smell it. Lin Tian searched in his heart for a long time but couldn’t find a similar scent.
All along, Lin Tian thought that creatures of the Netherworld were cold and gloomy. He never expected Mu Yun to have such a unique fragrance.
After close contact with Lin Tian, Mu Yun’s expression showed no emotion, only coldly asking, "Are you trying to run?"
Her interjection made Lin Tian look at the streets of Fengdu City again, and the familiar figure was gone. He said irritatedly, "Who’s trying to run? I just saw an acquaintance, and now, thanks to your interruption, they’re gone."
The three women all gave him a look, clearly saying: this is the Netherworld, where would you have acquaintances?
"Let’s set other matters aside first, we’ll speak after meeting the City Lord." Mu Yun said decisively and led the way inside.
"Lin Tian, who did you see?" Zhang Lingyu asked with a frown.
"Hard to say, maybe it was just him. That guy is well-informed. It’s a pity he’s vanished now." Lin Tian shook his head regretfully and walked into the City Lord’s Mansion.
The City Lord’s Mansion had a typical three-sectioned gate, passing through courtyards, with three sets of orderly doors, showcasing the mansion’s etiquette and solemnity.
In ancient times, official residences and mansions were required to adhere to certain architectural structures that had to match the owner’s status and could not be exceeded.
After passing through the three sets of doors, Lin Tian and his companions arrived at the hall of the City Lord’s Mansion. There were ghost soldiers guarding outside the hall, and a man with a dignified countenance sat high on a seat inside.
This man wore brocade clothes and a jade belt, with a square and resolute facial structure, dark complexion, and a short beard. He sat upright on the chair with great official authority.
Apart from the main seat, there was another person on the guest seat to the left, but his demeanor was quite the opposite. He had a thin face, a bony structure, and sunken, narrow eyes. Although he sat properly, his eyes occasionally showed impatience as if he had been waiting for a long time.
"The person on the main seat is Lord Zhu, and the one on the guest seat is Hei Xin. He is in charge of punishment in Fengdu City, ranking just below the City Lord. Watch your words and actions." Mu Yun reminded them before walking forward.
"Lord Zhu, the people have been brought." Mu Yun saluted and said loudly, then gestured for Lin Tian and the other two to come over.
Lord Zhu slightly lifted his eyes and carefully scrutinized Lin Tian and the others. Hei Xin was also scrutinizing them, only his small eyes held an unfriendly look.
Lin Tian stepped forward, cupped his hands, and said, "Greetings, Lord Zhu. May I ask why you summoned us?"
"Preposterous! Mere mortals, yet you don’t kneel upon seeing the City Lord. What a breach of decorum!" Before Lord Zhu could speak, Hei Xin slammed the table and glared angrily at the three of them.
However, his eyes were so small that no matter how he glared, he lacked authority and looked more sinister.
Lin Tian glanced at him, a faint smile curling at his lips. "In the Human Realm, we kneel to heaven, kneel to earth, and kneel to our parents, but we don’t kneel to officials. That’s our tradition."
"A petty Human Realm dares to talk about traditions?" Hei Xin sneered, then shouted: "Where are the guards? Detain him and make him kneel!"
"Hold it!" Lord Zhu said sternly, standing up and turning to look at Hei Xin, "Hei Xingsi, don’t bring your set of rules here."
Hei Xin squinted, then put on a smile again. "Lord Zhu, they trespassed into the Netherworld. I say they should be thrown into prison; a round of punishment will make them obedient."
"Trespassed?" Zhang Lingyu sneered, her tone very serious, "A sacrificial ritual is an ancient way, communicating heaven and the Netherworld, following the laws of heaven and earth. How could it be trespassing?"
Though the Beautiful Sky Master’s words were rather awkward, Lin Tian and Xiao Manxuan understood. Opening the passage to the Netherworld through a sacrificial ritual was reasonable, legal, and in compliance with the laws of heaven and earth.
"Ahem..." Lord Zhu coughed a few times, seemingly awkward, hesitating as he said, "You’re not wrong, but isn’t the passage opened a bit too large?"
As he spoke, Lord Zhu waved his hand, and a stream of air rippled out, spreading like water waves, then becoming smooth like a mirror. Blurred images appeared on the mirror’s surface and soon became clear.
Lin Tian saw it, the image was indeed of the Netherworld passage—a giant vortex black hole suspended in the Netherworld’s sky, very conspicuous, and nearly covering the hillside below.
"It’s indeed a bit large, but the cause lies with your Netherworld. A male yaksha passed through the passage, attempting to devour our living souls. Yet he was killed by the altar’s restriction, becoming a sacrifice, causing the passage to expand. If there’s blame, it’s on you for violating the taboo first!" Lin Tian spoke without reservation, completely ignoring Mu Yun’s earlier advice.
The female yaksha Mu Yun showed no expression upon hearing that a yaksha was killed, but Hei Xin and Lord Zhu’s faces changed drastically.
"Devouring living souls!" Lord Zhu waved his hand, and the hall doors slammed shut. He stared at Lin Tian and the others, his eyes flickering, unclear about his thoughts.
"What, does the City Lord have thoughts of... silencing us without a trace?" Lin Tian narrowed his eyes, locking eyes with Lord Zhu.
Devouring living souls is a severe taboo, more so than trespassing into the Netherworld. Although it happened before in the Netherworld with their own kind, they’d turn a blind eye. Now, Lin Tian and his companions were outsiders.
Mu Yun noticed something was amiss and quickly stepped forward, shielding Lin Tian. "City Lord..."
"Mu Yun, please remember your place!" Hei Xin immediately interrupted her, displeased with her actions.
"Hei Xingsi, these people were brought by me. I will ensure their safety." Unexpectedly, Mu Yun was tenacious, not following Hei Xin’s intentions at all.
"You! Ingrate!" Hei Xin was so furious that his face turned black, angry and solemn: "This is the City Lord’s mansion; let’s see how you protect them."
"Hehe..." Lin Tian chuckled calmly, his gaze coldly sweeping over Hei Xin. "Words fail, then action it is. Want to silence us? Let’s see if it agrees."
Lin Tian extended his hand, revealing a token emitting golden light, yet not blinding.
"Ksitigarbha Order!" Hei Xin exclaimed, his eyes widening. Immediately, he scrambled off the seat, kneeling and prostrating on the ground.
The arrogance and disdain from before vanished, replaced with reverence and fear. Lord Zhu didn’t dare to act rashly either, stepping down from his seat and kneeling on the ground. Mu Yun was also startled, bowing in respect.
In the span of ten or so seconds, the situation reversed completely, all because of the appearance of the Ksitigarbha Order.
Hei Xin was just a minor officer in Fengdu City, and even the City Lord was only a ruler of one city. There were many above them, like the Ten Halls Yama overseeing the entire Netherworld, and the Netherworld King, the master of the Netherworld.
Ksitigarbha and the Netherworld King were of the same rank, and Hei Xin wasn’t even equal to a Judge. Facing the Ksitigarbha Order was like facing Ksitigarbha himself, causing only terror.
"Are you still contemplating silencing us?" Lin Tian asked emotionlessly.
"No... dare not..." Hei Xin stammered, a stark contrast to his previous arrogance.
"If you don’t dare, then open the door!" Lin Tian exclaimed coldly.
