Chapter 2010: Chapter 2007: City Lord’s Mansion Announcement
Zhang Lingyu also found it amusing, and said in a tone that might have held praise, "You always come up with these strange and quirky ideas. I think you’re even more cunning than Linghu Cai."
"Cunning is something you use to describe an enemy. For a handsome buddy like me, you should use the word ’smart’. I seriously doubt how you got a full score on your college entrance exam essay," Lin Tian said very narcissistically, like Wang Po selling melons and praising her own goods.
"Haha, Lin Tian, you really are too narcissistic," Xiao Manxuan burst into laughter.
"More than just narcissistic, his tail is practically wagging to the sky," Zhang Lingyu said with disdain.
As the three of them joked around, Mu Yun had already walked out and replied, "The notice has been sent out, so someone will be looking for us soon. I suggest we go eat first; the two young ladies can’t handle hunger."
She didn’t mention Lin Tian, seemingly knowing that he could go without food for ten days to half a month without issue.
"The food in the Netherworld isn’t burned down from up there, is it?" Lin Tian pointed upward. Naturally, Xiao Manxuan and Zhang Lingyu understood his meaning. If the food was prepared that way, how could living humans consume it?
"You’re overthinking it. If burning it made it usable, the currency here would have inflated long ago. Follow me," Mu Yun dismissed Lin Tian’s notion.
Lin Tian shook his head in amusement. These days, even the Impermanence Ghost Messenger knows about inflation. It’s no wonder when ghost messengers carry out tasks in the human world, they dress not like ancient people but rather in a somewhat modern-retro style.
Following Mu Yun, they twisted and turned until they reached a restaurant. The exterior of the restaurant looked quite like an ancient style, but once inside the lobby, it was entirely different.
There were individual private seating areas for each table, with decorations that gave a modern yet elegant vibe. This style is quite common in the human world; who knew the Netherworld’s restaurants would also have it?
Mu Yun chose a spot, and the four of them sat down. A female server, holding a menu, approached them. Very modern-looking, even the attire of the server was quite pleasing to the eye.
In ancient times, women were not allowed to show their faces in public, not even attending academies, yet here was a female server. Lin Tian recalled the last time he visited a place like this, seeing a female server there too. Clearly, the Netherworld isn’t that old-fashioned.
"You are guests from above; bring menu number nine," Mu Yun ordered.
The female server was visibly startled and seemed a bit surprised but wasn’t flustered. Seeing living humans in the Netherworld didn’t rattle her, which is quite the contrast from how humans react to seeing ghosts.
"Alright, please wait a moment." The female server turned and left, soon returning with an exquisite menu, placing it on the table.
Lin Tian glanced at it, finding that the dishes weren’t much different from those in the human world. Out of curiosity, the two ladies ordered several dishes, and the server then politely left.
"The Netherworld isn’t quite how I imagined it. Shouldn’t it be all... ghosts? Why are there dishes from the human world?" Xiao Manxuan asked curiously, a question that also puzzled Lin Tian.
Mu Yun slightly shook her head and seriously said, "To explain using your scientific reasoning, the Netherworld, much like the human realm, is a space just like what your scientists refer to as a multi-dimensional space. The Netherworld has its native inhabitants, Spiritual Bodies, and naturally, there are living humans who descend from the human world. Don’t be surprised, apart from you, other living humans have been to the Netherworld."
"Perhaps one day, with the advancement of technological power in the human world to the point it can break spatial barriers, humans might massively discover the existence of the Netherworld."
"But that’s a long way off, because as of now, your science hasn’t even controlled nuclear fusion. And at that level, nuclear energy isn’t considered advanced. It’s not that nuclear energy isn’t viable, but that its application is still at a rather primitive stage."
"Ancient Martial does have the potential, but it’s been in decline in the human world. The current Ancient Martial pales in comparison to that of the Ancient Era," Mu Yun continued to speak at length, covering both technology and Ancient Martial Arts, leaving Lin Tian and the others dumbfounded.
This completely overturned Lin Tian’s understanding. Could a Netherworld Impermanence have such extensive knowledge? Even talking about technology?
Seeing the reactions of Lin Tian and the others, Mu Yun added indifferently, "I’ve been in contact with the human world for a long time, so I know a bit about your world. But it’s just that—a bit."
"You could go be a university professor," Lin Tian said helplessly.
Just as Lin Tian and a ghost messenger were discussing technology in this strange atmosphere, the surrounding diners were enthusiastically discussing something.
"Have you heard? The City Lord’s Mansion released a message: there’s an Ancient Divine Zither, and whoever can identify its origin will be specially appointed as the City Defense Deputy Commander of Fengdu City."
"Really? No way."
"Of course it’s true. The City Lord’s Mansion issued it; it can’t be false. Plus, it’s a formal position."
"Wow, if I become the Deputy Commander, I could practically walk sideways in Fengdu City. Let’s see if those little ghost messengers would dare bully us then."
"Walking sideways might be a bit much; there’s still the Commander, the Great Commander, and the City Lord above you. But if you do become Deputy Commander, you can walk with your head held high."
"With your hunched back, walking with your head high, really? Someone like me, tall and mighty, is the perfect choice for Deputy Commander."
"Come on, what are we waiting for? Guys, if we’re late, we won’t have a chance; let’s hurry!"
A group of people, excitedly discussing, suddenly abandoned their food bowls and rushed out, leaving the restaurant half-empty as more diners continued to leave.
Although not everyone is aiming for the Deputy Commander’s position, such an event draws many diners who want to witness the excitement, becoming fodder for their bragging rights later.
"Mu Yun Envoy, you’re offering a Deputy Commander position as a reward? That’s quite a significant stake," Lin Tian was very surprised. He only thought there would be monetary rewards earlier.
Mu Yun, however, wasn’t concerned and calmly said, "There are two reasons: one, the City Lord hopes you’ll finish your tasks quickly and leave soon to close the portal. The bigger the stakes, the faster the information spreads, hopefully reaching Linghu Cai as quickly as possible."
"Secondly, if someone who comes to meet the challenge truly has talent, we wouldn’t mind offering a Deputy Commander position. While your human realm values talent, so does the Netherworld."
"Looks like Lord Zhu has a fine-tuned plan indeed. Those who can hold such positions are definitely not simpletons," Lin Tian said lightly, neither mocking nor praising.
Before long, the server started serving the dishes. Zhang Lingyu didn’t hesitate to dig in first. As a Demon Exorcist, she could eat it, which meant it was fine.
Mu Yun didn’t touch the food, only sipping a cup of clear tea. Being from the Netherworld, she naturally wouldn’t eat what came from the human world. That male yaksha might dig out hearts and brains to eat, but Mu Yun probably didn’t have such inclinations, though they’re of the same race, Lin Tian thought to himself.
After finishing their meal, the four didn’t hurry back to the City Lord’s Mansion; instead, they strolled through a few more streets, giving Linghu Cai enough time to come for the challenge.
