Chapter 2032 - 2029: Predicament

Chapter 2032: Chapter 2029: Predicament

City Lord Jia’s warhorse was exceedingly fast, quickly catching up with the Cavalry Group and racing alongside He Shan.

"My Lord, you..." He Shan saw a fast horse approaching, and upon recognizing City Lord Jia’s face, he was very anxious: "Why did you come here?"

"What do you mean, you little brat? You’ve been Cavalry Commander for too long and probably forgot that the Cavalry Group was started by me," City Lord Jia reprimanded without hesitation.

"I dare not forget, loyalty is our creed, to fight to the last moment until death!" He Shan said solemnly.

"Good that you know, give it all you’ve got, damn it!" City Lord Jia raised the Sky Halberd in his hand and shouted loudly.

Seeing their leader leading by example, the cavalrymen were invigorated: "Kill!"

The Cavalry Group surged forward like a steel torrent, clashing with the Evil Spirit Tide. City Lord Jia wielded a Sky Halberd, a combination of spear and halberd, with single-edged ones called Azure Dragon Halberds, and double-edged ones called Fangtian Halberds.

The Fangtian Halberd, decorated with engravings, is also called a Sky Halberd. The one held by City Lord Jia was exceptionally majestic, with a halberd pole engraved with flame patterns like burning Hellfire, with black energy coiling around its sharp edge, exuding a murderous aura. The double blades flickered with a faint red glow, like blood, like Shura Power, thirsting for blood and slaughter.

Though City Lord Jia was a city lord, he wasn’t as refined as Lord Zhu; he was a rugged man, tall and mighty. He grasped the Sky Halberd with one hand and swung it fiercely forward.

The sharp double blades sliced through the Evil Spirits’ bodies as if cutting through tofu, splitting them in two. Those struck by the halberd pole were also sent flying, like autumn leaves swept away by the wind. Each swing cleared a space.

City Lord Jia and He Shan were both the spearhead of the Cavalry Group, leading the entire cavalry to cut through brambles and thorns. Their charge delayed the Evil Spirits’ advance, and with a loud bang, the city gates closed successfully.

"Now there’s no way back, kill them for me!" City Lord Jia shouted, swinging the Sky Halberd to clear another area.

But the Evil Spirits came continuously. As the warhorses advanced a bit, the Evil Spirits filled the space again. No matter how fast they were killed, the Evil Spirits would fill it in a breath.

The charging Cavalry Group should have been terrifying and unstoppable, but now, it was as if the whole group was stuck in a quagmire. Instead of speeding up, the charge slowed, until finally, they couldn’t move an inch.

The Evil Spirits could not be exhausted, and yet cavalrymen were continually dragged off their horses by the Evil Spirits and torn apart and devoured.

"Contract the formation!" City Lord Jia swung the Sky Halberd, and a flash of red light cleared an area of Evil Spirits, allowing him to give a command to change the formation in an instant of respite.

The cavalrymen followed the command, contracting inward. The conical attack formation quickly transformed into a circular defensive formation. During this transformation, many cavalrymen were attacked and torn apart by the Evil Spirits.

"City Lord, we should move in the opposite direction and lure the Evil Spirits away from the fortress," He Shan suggested to City Lord Jia as they fought side by side, taking advantage of the cleared space.

"I’m afraid these Evil Spirits won’t act according to our wishes," City Lord Jia did not favor the idea but gave the movement command anyway: "Move, fighting retreat!"

But as soon as he spoke, a large number of Evil Spirits broke away and charged towards the fortress. With so many Evil Spirits, those on the outside couldn’t squeeze in to attack the cavalry, so they turned to attack the fortress.

"Longbow formation, ready!" A deputy on the city wall clad in black armor commanded. With a wave of his hand, a rain of arrows shot into the sky, cascading down onto the Evil Spirit Tide.

There were so many Evil Spirits in the gorge, densely packed. A single rain of arrows turned many into pin cushions, taking them down, with greater lethality than before.

But, it was just a wave of Evil Spirits before, now they came continuously, and as soon as one fell, more replaced it, advancing on the city walls even faster than before.

The longbow arrow rain hadn’t been fired as often as before, and yet the Evil Spirits had already entered the range of the ’Rainstorm’ crossbow.

With a hum, the crossbows fired. At close range, they had even more destructive power, and piles of Evil Spirits fell. Soon, a thick layer carpeted the ground outside the fortress. If it continued like this, it would eventually pile into mountains, possibly as high as the city walls.

Suddenly, the Evil Spirits stepped on their fallen companions, leaping high. But even at their height, they were still far from the top of the city walls, unable to scale them.

As everyone was puzzled by the Evil Spirits’ actions, another rain of arrows fell, mostly striking the leaping Evil Spirits. This meant the ones below were safe from the crossbows.

"Oh no," Mu Yun exclaimed, while Lin Tian also realized the intent of the Evil Spirits.

Sure enough, the Evil Spirits quickly advanced from below, with the leaping Evil Spirits blocking most of the crossbows, barely suffering any loss below, allowing the Evil Spirit Tide to push forward significantly.

"Mu Yun Envoy, didn’t you say the Evil Spirits have no consciousness? Why are they using tactical coordination?" Lin Tian frowned and asked.

"I don’t know! There has never been anything like this in the Netherworld," Mu Yun was both shocked and puzzled.

While the two talked, another batch of Evil Spirits leapt up, blocking the crossbows with their bodies, allowing the Evil Spirit Tide to advance once more.

The Evil Spirits felt no fear nor cared for losses, leaving the ghost soldiers terrified. They were elite, but they had never seen such a situation, the Evil Spirits were too crazy.

The crossbows couldn’t halt the advancement of the Evil Spirit Tide. Soon, they had swarmed to the base of the city walls, marking the failure of He Shan’s plan. The Cavalry Group couldn’t lure away the Evil Spirits, and by then, they were deeply entangled in the tide, unable to protect the city walls.

"Psst..." Some Evil Spirits spat out dark red liquid, just like before, but instead of the city walls, they targeted the city gate! A sizzling sound continuously resonated as the gate was melted away bit by bit.

The city gate was the fortress’s weakest point, and that the Evil Spirits knew to attack its weakness made it impossible for Lin Tian to believe they had no consciousness. He even entertained a bold thought, could it be someone was controlling the Evil Spirits?

But this idea was too outrageous. Who could be so incredible, controlling such a terrifying Evil Spirit Army? It seemed as if they wanted to destroy the Netherworld.

"Lin Tian, what are you planning to do? The city gate may be strong, but it cannot withstand the Evil Spirits’ attack for long," Zhang Lingyu asked solemnly. She did not insist that Lin Tian had to help the fortress, considering this was the Netherworld, not the Human Realm. Moreover, the wars of the Netherworld weren’t something a few individuals could intervene in.

If the enemy had thoughts and souls, decapitation or heavy casualties could deter them and prompt a retreat. But the Evil Spirits had no leader to behead or to intimidate, only to persistently assault until conquered, without any fear.
