Chapter 2037: Chapter 2034: Heroic Deeds
Lin Tian and the others had become heroes of the fortress, and the ghost soldiers were more than willing to drive the carriage for Lin Tian.
But He Shan moved faster than all the ghost soldiers; in two strides he was in front of Lin Tian and said, "I’ll drive the carriage instead."
City Lord Jia waved his hand and said helplessly, "Fine, you do it. You have to answer Lin Tian’s questions anyway. Remember, don’t be so rough. If you slight the heroes, just see how I deal with you."
"I guarantee I won’t embarrass you, my lord." He Shan hurriedly raised his hand in pledge, then imitated a scholar’s manner and made a courteous gesture to Lin Tian and the others. "Brother Lin Tian, please."
A rough big guy copying a scholar’s gentle elegance looked a bit comical, but actually kind of cute. Lin Tian didn’t say anything, just nodded, slung the guqin over his back, picked up Xiao Manxuan, and walked down from the city wall. All the ghost soldiers straightened up and watched Lin Tian’s group leave.
He Shan brought over a carriage, a typical ancient means of transport. Since it was a two-horse carriage, the compartment was quite wide, enough to seat four or five people. It was just a bit simple, no soft cushions, only a few benches.
Lin Tian didn’t really mind; the main issue was that Xiao Manxuan had nowhere to lie down, so he could only hold her. The little girl’s body was soft and pliant, and she smelled good; for him it was a kind of enjoyment. Of course, there was no way he could really take advantage; the two great beauties Yunhe and Zhang Lingyu were watching.
He Shan sat outside the compartment, in charge of driving, and said a little awkwardly, "Sorry, this carriage is what we usually use. It’s a bit crude, and the girl’s unconscious—there’s nowhere proper for her to lie."
"It’s fine, I’ll just hold her." Lin Tian said casually.
Zhang Lingyu shot him a charmingly annoyed look and said softly, "Of course it’s fine for you, you’re the one getting all the advantage."
Yunhe and He Shan understood exactly what she meant; they wanted to laugh but felt embarrassed, so he could only focus on driving the carriage.
The carriage left the fortress and gradually drew away. Looking out from the rear window, they could still vaguely see the ghost soldiers cleaning up the battlefield. A moment ago the fortress had also been breached by the evil spirits and taken heavy losses.
Lin Tian suddenly said quietly, "If the ghost soldiers die in battle, what happens to them?"
He Shan and Yunhe, the two Netherworld "locals," were both stunned, then realized what he meant. He Shan sighed and said, "What else can happen? They enter the cycle of reincarnation all the same."
Yunhe seemed to know what Lin Tian was thinking and said mildly, "You thought a trip through Fengdu City would let the ghost soldiers come back to life?"
"Isn’t that the case? The Netherworld controls the passage of reincarnation—don’t you have the final say in life and death?" Lin Tian asked on purpose.
Yunhe shook her head and said, "The Netherworld Ghost Country and the Human Clan of the Human Realm are all part of the Six Paths of Life. In the Human Realm, besides the Human Path’s Human Clan, there are animals of the Beast Path. It’s the same in the Netherworld: besides the ghosts of the Ghost Country, there are Xiu Luo of the Asura Path, Netherworld creatures of the Hell Path, and evil ghosts of the Hungry Ghost Dao."
"No matter which Path of life, after death they all enter reincarnation. The ghosts of the Ghost Country are no exception. When ghost soldiers die, they enter the Six Paths of Reincarnation just like the Human Clan; the only difference is that their forms of life are different." Yunhe explained in detail.
"So that’s how it is." Lin Tian suddenly understood, then asked, "Then what’s the deal with Xiu Luo?"
"Xiu Luo are a rather special race. Their nature is kind, but they’re arrogant and jealous, greedy, angry, and eager to fight. However, there are very few Xiu Luo; they haven’t appeared in a long time, to the point that this race is slowly being forgotten." Yunhe answered again.
"I see." Lin Tian stopped asking and instead adjusted Xiao Manxuan in his arms so she could lie more comfortably.
The little girl’s complexion was slowly recovering its rosiness, her breathing also becoming even. Her eyes were gently closed, her eyelashes long, like an Angel in deep sleep. There was a faint smile on her lips, as if she were dreaming a blissful, beautiful dream.
Zhang Lingyu gazed at Xiao Manxuan, and a hint of envy flashed through her eyes without her even noticing, but she hid it well and didn’t let Lin Tian see.
The carriage rode very smoothly, and before long they were back in Blood Sea City. When the guards saw He Shan, they hurriedly saluted, but then grew puzzled: the dignified General himself was personally driving a carriage—could it be the City Lord?
They stole a glance and saw it wasn’t the City Lord, but four people. Besides Yunhe, they didn’t recognize the others at all. Once the carriage passed, the guards began whispering among themselves.
He Shan chuckled, "It won’t be long before your heroic deeds spread through Blood Sea City. Get ready to receive worshipful looks."
"You people of the Netherworld Ghost Country worship me? Heh, I’m really not that popular in Fengdu City." Lin Tian smiled faintly, utterly unconcerned.
"Tch, who cares about that Fengdu City? That bunch of pampered guys are stubborn and rotten to the core. I can’t stand them." He Shan said boisterously, with no politeness at all.
Lin Tian and Zhang Lingyu were both taken aback—this Cavalry Group leader really dared to talk. In the Human Realm, Fengdu City holds a status equivalent to the Imperial City. Yunhe looked rather awkward; at the very least, she was part of Fengdu City’s Yin Department.
He Shan seemed to sense how she felt and laughed, "My bad, Mu Yun Envoy, you’re an exception, an exception."
As he spoke, he pulled the carriage to a stop. Lin Tian looked out and realized they had already arrived at the City Lord’s Mansion.
Under the guards’ curious gazes, Lin Tian followed He Shan into the City Lord’s Mansion and moved into one of the side rooms there. After settling Xiao Manxuan on the bed, only then did Lin Tian let out a breath.
"Brother Lin Tian, you should rest first. If you need anything, just tell the servants here. As for what you want to find out, I’m always in the City Lord’s Mansion and can tell you anytime." He Shan knew when to bow out; once he’d settled them in, he took his leave.
"Lingyu, Yunhe, you two go rest as well. Things have been pretty exhausting lately." Lin Tian told them.
"And you..." Seeing that Lin Tian wasn’t moving, Zhang Lingyu hesitated, meaning to say: are you planning to sleep in the same room as Xuanxuan?
Lin Tian pointed at his sleeve, looking helpless. "I don’t have a choice..." At the moment, although Xiao Manxuan was fast asleep, her hand was clinging tightly to Lin Tian’s sleeve, as if afraid he’d run away.
Zhang Lingyu glared at him, warning him not to try anything, and in the end could only leave the room reluctantly.
Watching the little girl sleep, Lin Tian started to feel drowsy himself. He couldn’t be bothered to fuss over anything else and simply lay down by the side of the bed to nap.
Maybe it really had been too exhausting—once he dozed off, he fell into a deep sleep. He didn’t know how long he slept; he only felt his ear getting a bit itchy, and itchier by the moment. He scratched it subconsciously, then heard a soft giggle.
He opened his eyes and saw the little girl lying on her stomach on the bed, head tilted as she stared at him. Her rosy pretty face was right next to his, and from this close Lin Tian could see even more clearly how fair and delicate her skin was, like it would break at a touch.
And because she was lying on her stomach, from his angle his gaze followed the line of her collar and saw a bottomless ravine; that expanse of snow-white made his throat involuntarily work in a swallow.
The little girl didn’t seem to realize her charms were on full display. She was holding a feather from who knows where, teasing his ear with it over and over, her eyes full of mischievous laughter.
Seeing Lin Tian wake up, Xiao Manxuan broke into a bright smile and said sweetly, "You’re awake. You sleep like a pig—I’ve been scratching you for ages and you only just woke up. Lingyu and Sister Mu Yun have already been in twice."
