Amon nodded his head with a satisfied expression. ’Level 19 isn’t bad.’
He had gained several levels from exploring the dungeon.
Amon felt that his progress was going much faster than he had expected.
He wondered if he would be the only person at level 19 during the upcoming screening.
The thought made him feel slightly proud, but he quickly shook his head and pushed it away. ’Don’t get arrogant.’
There could easily be people who had been training for years, and some students might possess talents far beyond what he had seen so far.
Amon didn’t know enough about the students from other academies to confidently say that he was the strongest.
Still, he was fairly certain about one thing. ’I’m at least in the top five.’
That alone was enough to make him satisfied.
Amon closed the status screen, opened the door, and stepped inside.
The apartment was unusually quiet, meaning Sidney was sleeping.
Amon looked toward the sofa and found Ambrosia sitting there with the old laptop on her legs.
She was focused on the screen, but the moment she noticed him approaching, she looked up and smiled.
"Welcome back."
Amon nodded and dropped his bag beside the sofa. "I am home."
Ambrosia closed the laptop halfway and looked at him. "How was your day?"
Amon thought about the dungeon, the monsters, the boss, and the strange physique he had received before answering.
"It was much better than I expected."
Ambrosia smiled. "That’s good."
She shifted slightly on the sofa and patted the empty space beside her. "You should sit down with me once in a while instead of disappearing into your room every time you come home."
Amon looked toward the bathroom as he desperately wanted to take a bath.
After fighting monsters all day, he could practically feel the grime sticking to his body.
But when he looked back at Ambrosia’s face, he couldn’t bring himself to refuse.
"Fine." He walked over and sat down.
However, Amon deliberately left a noticeable amount of distance between them.
Ambrosia immediately noticed. "You know I’m not going to eat you, right?"
Amon shook his head. "I’m fine here."
Ambrosia chuckled softly.
She didn’t take it to heart and simply leaned back against the sofa. "You’re really strange sometimes."
Amon ignored the comment and looked at the laptop sitting beside her. "What were you doing?"
"Just checking a few things." Ambrosia’s expression changed slightly as she looked down at the laptop. "...Actually, I got a message from my mother."
Amon raised his eyebrow. "Did something happen?"
Ambrosia remained silent for a moment before giving him a small, tired smile. "They’re calling me back."
Amon’s expression became serious. "What?"
"My mother wants me to return and live with them for a while." She looked toward the dark screen of the laptop without opening it again.
"They’re afraid I’ll be attacked again if I keep living here after what happened with the Cordo family."
Amon didn’t immediately respond.
Ambrosia continued speaking after noticing his expression. "They think staying with them would be safer, especially now that everyone knows about the case and what happened to me."
Amon looked at her. "Are you going to live with them, then?"
Ambrosia immediately shook her head.
"No way." Her answer came so quickly that Amon almost smiled. "...I don’t want to live with someone who won’t accept you."
Amon became silent.
For some reason, those words pulled an old memory from the back of his mind.
He remembered the first days after he had transmigrated into this world.
He had been confused, frightened, and completely unfamiliar with the life that had suddenly become his.
Among all the difficulties, there were Ambrosia’s parents.
They had blamed him for the death of their son-in-law.
Amon still remembered the way they looked at him back then, as if his very existence was responsible for everything that had happened.
It was safe to say that they had never liked him.
"...You should really go somewhere safe." Amon continued before she could respond. "Staying here just because of me doesn’t make much sense."
Ambrosia didn’t say anything. She simply looked at him for several seconds before slowly extending her hand.
Her fingers gently wrapped around his hand.
"I chose this life."
Amon looked down at their hands.
Ambrosia’s voice was quiet, but there was a firmness behind her words. "I was the one who wanted to take care of you, and I was the one who wanted to stay with you."
Amon looked at her. "That doesn’t mean you should just leave your parents behind."
Ambrosia’s expression suddenly became strict. "They already lost their daughter when they arranged my marriage without my will."
Amon remained silent.
Ambrosia tightened her grip around his hand slightly.
"I’ve spent enough of my life doing what other people wanted me to do." She looked directly into his eyes. "I won’t let them tell me who I should love and who I shouldn’t."
Amon didn’t know what to say to that.
He could tell from her expression that she had already made up her mind.
Trying to argue with her would probably accomplish nothing.
After a few seconds, Amon finally sighed. "I’m going to bed."
"Already?" Ambrosia blinked. "What about dinner?"
"I already ate."
Ambrosia nodded slowly. "Alright."
Amon stood up and started walking toward his room. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight, Amon."
He opened the door to his room and walked inside before closing it behind him.
Amon threw himself onto the bed and stared at the ceiling.
For several moments, he didn’t think about anything until his mind returned to what Ambrosia had said.
’She’s an idiot.’ Amon sighed.
She was willing to stay in an unsafe place simply because she didn’t want to leave him behind.
He couldn’t understand why she always seemed willing to put herself through trouble for his sake.
Yet, despite thinking she was being foolish, Amon knew he would have been miserable if she hadn’t made that choice last year.
When he had first transmigrated into this world, he had been nothing more than a confused guy who didn’t understand what was happening around him.
Without Ambrosia taking him in, he might have ended up living on the streets.
He might not have even survived long enough to discover what kind of world he had been brought into.
Amon closed his eyes. ’She gave me a home when I had nothing.’
The thought stayed in his mind for a while.
He couldn’t change the past, and he couldn’t force Ambrosia to abandon the life she had chosen.
But there was something he could do. ’I need to give her a happy life.’
Amon slowly pulled the blanket over himself.
He had no idea what the future would bring, and considering everything that had happened recently, he suspected things were only going to become more complicated.
Still, he wanted Ambrosia to have a peaceful life where she could finally be stress-free and smiling all day.
Amon let out a quiet sigh and closed his eyes, allowing the exhaustion from the dungeon to finally catch up with him.
Tomorrow, he needed to visit the Academy, and after that, the screening would begin.
