Chapter 44: Chapter 44: Thorne Returns

Seraphine’s promised inquiry took the better part of two weeks, time I filled with the same careful, patient rhythm of ordinary quest work and domain cultivation that had steadied me through the investigation’s earlier cold stretches. The Duskwood Sentinel sapling had grown considerably in my absence, its mana-conductive bark already showing the faint, subtle shimmer Verdant Genesis Array’s description had promised, and I found genuine, quiet satisfaction in tending it during evenings that would otherwise have been consumed entirely by anxious waiting.

It was during one such evening, walking the domain’s rolling hills with Absolute Appraisal idly cataloguing the maturing harvest’s growing value, that a familiar presence at my rented room’s door pulled me back to the ordinary world — a Guild runner, carrying a message that made me abandon the domain’s quiet peace immediately.

Thorne’s back in Tula, the note read, in Jones’s own careful hand. Guild business brought him through, and I’ve briefed him on the trafficking investigation given his prior involvement in your record. He’s asked to see you directly.

I found Thorne at the Chapter house’s training yard the following morning, looking exactly as I remembered him from the road to Tula months earlier, sparring casually against a wooden practice dummy with the same economical, practiced efficiency he’d shown against goblins and an orc alike.

"Heard you’ve been busy," he said, without turning, apparently having caught my approach through senses considerably sharper than ordinary awareness. "Trafficking rings, noble corruption, secret compounds. Jones tells me you’ve barely slowed down since I left you here."

"Wasn’t planning on getting tangled in all this," I admitted, settling onto a nearby bench as he finished his practice sequence and turned to properly greet me. "Just followed a notice board plea about a missing girl. Grew considerably from there."

"Sounds familiar," Thorne said, a faint, knowing smile crossing his weathered features. "Seems to be a pattern with you. Small kindness, enormous consequence." He studied me a long moment, something warm settling behind his usual composed assessment. "You look well. Stronger, if I’m any judge, though I suspect there’s more behind that than simple training."

"There’s always more," I said, and found myself genuinely glad, in a way I hadn’t fully appreciated until this moment, to have him back in Tula even briefly.

Jones joined us shortly after, laying out the investigation’s full current shape for Thorne’s benefit — the ledger, the Wept Order’s dark history, the compound I’d infiltrated, Seraphine’s ongoing inquiry into the noble household funding it all.

"That’s considerably more than I expected when I first heard ’trafficking ring’ in your message," Thorne said, once Jones had finished. "Compound with defensible walls, guard rotations, noble backing. That’s not something either of us handles casually, however capable Zayne’s proven himself."

"Which is precisely why I wanted you here for this conversation," Jones said. "I trust your judgment on tactical matters more than most, and this operation’s scale means we’ll need a properly assembled team before moving against it directly."

Thorne nodded slowly, already shifting into the same focused, professional calculation I remembered from our approach toward Shadowfang’s sealed chamber months earlier. "Numbers, first. How many guards did you count, Zayne?"

"Six on rotation that I directly observed, though I suspect more exist beyond what I could map during two nights of careful observation. Beyond that, an unknown number of masked figures I’d estimate at Thorncroft’s core leadership, plus whatever additional muscle they’ve hired beyond the trafficking network’s own recruits."

"And the captives themselves?"

"Dozens, at minimum," I said, the memory of that crowded, clustered presence behind the compound’s heavily guarded building settling heavy in my chest. "Possibly considerably more than dozens, given the compound’s actual scale compared to what its exterior suggested."

Thorne was quiet a long moment, weighing the numbers with visible concern. "That’s not a raid two or three people manage cleanly, however capable you’ve become. We’ll need proper support — Guild-sanctioned reinforcements, at minimum, and ideally something to counter whatever magical concealment or defenses Thorncroft’s built into that compound given his apparent training."

"I can help with that," came a voice from the training yard’s entrance, and I turned to find Alphina approaching, having clearly been directed here by Jones’s own careful coordination. "If you’re planning a raid against a compound built by someone with genuine Arcanum training, you’ll want a mage familiar with exactly the kind of concealment and defensive techniques he’s likely employed."

Thorne studied her with open, assessing curiosity. "And you are?"

"Alphina Baewick," she said, extending a hand with the same confident directness I’d first seen in that boar-guarded clearing. "Arcanum-trained, and considerably more invested in this investigation’s success than my academy’s official position would suggest."

"She’s been essential," I confirmed. "Research, identification, half the leads that got us this far."

Thorne shook her offered hand, something like genuine respect settling into his expression. "Then it seems we’re finally assembling something like a proper team," he said. "Let’s discuss exactly how we’re going to bring this compound down, and bring everyone inside it home safely."

We spent the remainder of that afternoon in the training yard, the four of us working through the rough shape of a plan while Thorne tested my own progress with the same critical, practiced eye he’d once applied on the road to the estate town.

"Show me the Qi Detonation," he said, midway through our planning, curiosity apparently overriding the day’s more pressing business. "Jones mentioned you’ve developed something considerably beyond simple circulation since I last saw you fight."

I demonstrated, carefully, aiming the controlled discharge at a stack of practice dummies rather than anything living, and watched Thorne’s eyebrows rise as three of them toppled in a single, precise wave.

"That’s considerably more refined than anything I taught you," he said, genuine approval coloring his assessment. "You’ve found a real teacher somewhere, or you’ve simply kept pushing on your own."

"Bit of both," I admitted, thinking of the countless quiet evenings spent perfecting the technique alone in my domain, a truth I still wasn’t ready to fully share even with him.

"Whatever the source, it’ll serve us well against Thorncroft’s compound," Thorne said. "Numbers favor us if we can neutralize resistance efficiently rather than trading blows one at a time. Keep that control sharp — we’ll need it."

Alphina watched the demonstration with her own considerable interest, already sketching notes about how her magical support might complement such a technique during the actual raid. "If I can time a concealment disruption to coincide with a discharge like that," she mused, "we could clear an entire room’s resistance in the same breath we reveal ourselves. Worth testing, if we have time before the raid itself."

"We’ll make time," Jones said, satisfaction evident in his tone as the team’s individual pieces began, finally, to fit together into something resembling a genuine, coordinated plan.

I left the training yard that evening feeling something I hadn’t quite allowed myself since this investigation began — genuine confidence, not in my own capability alone, but in the team now assembled around me, each piece complementing the others in ways my solo infiltration weeks earlier never could have matched.
