Chapter 45: Chapter 45: The Plan

We spent the following week in careful, methodical preparation, Thorne’s tactical experience combining with Jones’s institutional resources and Alphina’s magical expertise to build something considerably more substantial than my own solo infiltration had managed alone.

Seraphine’s promised information finally arrived midway through that week, delivered through the same discreet channel as before — a name, carefully confirmed through her own patient noble inquiries: House Verren, a minor but genuinely wealthy noble family with holdings scattered across the region’s eastern reaches, close enough to Tula to explain the compound’s location, obscure enough that their involvement had apparently escaped notice for years.

"Lord Verren’s reputation is quietly troubled, from what I’ve gathered," Seraphine’s accompanying note read. "Rumors of unusual expenses, strange associates, nothing ever substantial enough to draw formal scrutiny. I suspect Thorncroft has served as his discreet solution to funding certain private appetites the family’s public reputation couldn’t otherwise accommodate. Proceed carefully — House Verren maintains enough standing that a botched accusation could cost you considerably more than this investigation’s failure alone."

Jones received the confirmation with the same grim satisfaction I’d come to expect from genuine, hard-won progress. "That’s enough to formally justify Guild-sanctioned action," he said, studying the name with visible relief. "A confirmed noble household funding illegal trafficking, verified through independent noble sources rather than our own investigation alone — that’s considerably harder for anyone to dismiss or bury than our earlier fragments of evidence."

"Does that mean we can move with proper backing now?" I asked.

"It means I can authorize a formal Guild response team, yes," Jones confirmed. "I’ll need several days to assemble capable adventurers beyond just the three of you, and to coordinate with Watch officials I trust enough to bring into this without risking further leaks."

Thorne, in the meantime, worked through the compound’s tactical shape with the same careful precision he’d once applied to Brightwood’s chokepoint defense, sketching approach routes, identifying likely defensive weak points based on my own careful observations, planning contingencies for everything from a straightforward assault to a more careful, staged infiltration.

"Given the scale you’ve described," he said, during one of our planning sessions, "I’d favor a night approach, timed against the guard rotation gaps you already identified. Alphina’s magical support can handle any concealment or ward Thorncroft’s built into the walls themselves, while the two of us handle whatever guards and masked leadership we encounter directly."

"And the captives themselves?" I asked. "However we breach the compound, we need a plan for getting dozens of frightened, likely traumatized people out safely, not just fighting our way to Thorncroft."

"That’s where the additional Guild team becomes essential," Jones said. "Once the compound’s defenses are properly neutralized, a coordinated extraction effort, with enough hands to manage frightened captives and enough capability to handle any remaining resistance."

Alphina, for her part, spent the week researching everything she could about defensive and offensive magic suited to breaching whatever wards Thorncroft’s Arcanum training might have layered into the compound’s construction, occasionally sharing fragments of her progress during our joint planning sessions.

"I’ve identified a counter-technique for the suppression rune style we found in that original ledger," she reported, near the week’s end. "If Thorncroft’s applied similar concealment to the compound itself, I should be able to unravel it, or at least significantly weaken its effectiveness, given enough preparation time on-site."

The final planning session brought all the pieces together — a dozen Guild-sanctioned adventurers Jones had carefully, discreetly assembled, briefed only on the operation’s broad shape rather than every sensitive detail, alongside Thorne, Alphina, Jones himself, and me.

"We move in three days’ time," Jones announced, once the final logistics had settled into place. "Night approach, exactly as Thorne’s outlined. Zayne leads the initial infiltration, given his familiarity with the compound’s layout, followed by Thorne and Alphina, with the broader team positioned to move in once the initial breach is secured."

I felt the weight of that responsibility settle heavily, though considerably less daunting now than it would have felt facing this alone, the way I’d first approached the transport weeks earlier.

"Any final questions?" Jones asked, studying the assembled team with the same careful, weighing attention he’d applied throughout this entire investigation.

Nobody spoke, the silence carrying the particular weight of people who’d already turned every question over as thoroughly as preparation allowed.

"Then get what rest you can," Jones said finally. "Three days, and we finally end whatever Thorncroft’s built out there, one way or another."

I left that final session with Thorne falling into step beside me, the same steady, reassuring presence I remembered from the road to Shadowfang months earlier.

"Ready?" he asked, as we walked.

"As ready as I can be," I admitted. "Whatever we find in there, I have a feeling it’s going to be worse than even our worst planning has accounted for."

"Usually is," Thorne said, without false comfort. "But you’ve faced worse than you expected before, and come through it. Trust that this time won’t be any different."

I held onto that reassurance as best I could over the following three days, though the singular, distinct presence I’d sensed behind that compound’s most heavily guarded door lingered in memory throughout every hour of final preparation, a mystery I suspected we were finally, properly about to uncover.

I spent one of those final three days back in my domain, alone, running through every skill I’d accumulated with the same careful, deliberate discipline I imagined a soldier might apply the night before a genuine war. Berserker’s heat, Focused Qi Detonation’s precision, the sword forms Thorne had drilled into me across two separate roads and two separate crises — I tested each in turn, refining what I could, accepting what I couldn’t improve further in three short days.

I also, finally, allowed myself a proper look at the eastern structure’s mystery, turning Absolute Appraisal inward toward my own memory of that warded building’s faint, layered presence, trying to draw whatever additional insight the skill’s growing sophistication might offer even from secondhand recollection.

[Appraisal Note: Insufficient Direct Data. Recommend Proximity for Further Analysis.]

The notification offered little beyond confirming what I already suspected — that whatever waited in that structure demanded direct investigation rather than distant speculation, and that the raid itself, whatever else it accomplished, needed to include a deliberate effort to reach it.

I raised the point one final time with Thorne and Jones both, the evening before our departure, watching them weigh the addition to an already carefully balanced plan.

"We’ll adjust the approach to account for it," Thorne said finally. "Once the main resistance is cleared, you and I push toward that structure directly, rather than joining the broader extraction effort immediately. Whatever’s there, it’s clearly mattered enough to Thorncroft’s operation that I’d rather understand it properly than leave it for whoever might come looking after we’ve already withdrawn."

"Agreed," Jones said. "Alphina, you’ll need to prioritize any concealment ward on that specific structure, given how heavily protected Zayne’s described it."

Alphina nodded, already turning her attention toward exactly that preparation, and I felt the plan’s final shape settle into place — comprehensive, carefully considered, and as ready as three days’ preparation could reasonably make us for whatever waited at Thorncroft’s compound’s darkest, most carefully guarded heart.
