The screen lit up and some words appeared on it in clear capital letters.
"WAGER LEDGER"
The crowd looked at it with confusion as a long list began appearing below the title.
There were names of all the participants along with the amount of gold coins people had bet on them before the tournament started.
Most of the names were dim, while only ten names were glowing brightly.
Those ten were the participants who were still standing in the tournament.
The list was arranged according to their participant numbers, not according to how much money was bet on them. Because of that, there were gaps between the numbers.
1: Ryan — 1k 585 gold coins (17)
13: Rain — 4k 528 gold coins (421)
23: Nyx — 9k 578 gold coins (820)
The names between them were dim because those participants had already been eliminated.
The crowd continued looking at the screen as more names appeared.
31: Elara Windmare — 1 lakh 57k 892 gold coins (4,579)
"That’s a lot!"
"Of course! She is one of the favorites!"
Then another name appeared.
36: Liam — 82k 984 gold coins (1,084)
42: Lucas — 59k 275 gold coins (1,478)
49: Mina — 91k 575 gold coins (489)
56: Marcus — 1 lakh 7k 897 gold coins (2,758)
"That’s my boy!"
"Over one lakh!"
"Marcus!"
The crowd became louder when Marcus’s name appeared.
But then the screen continued moving.
There were more dim names before another glowing name appeared.
69: Amon — 52 lakh gold coins (2)
For a moment, the crowd became silent.
"..."
"52 lakh?"
"Only two people bet on him?"
Everyone stared at the number.
The number inside the brackets showed how many people had placed bets on that participant, while the number before it showed the total amount they had bet.
So even though only two people had bet on Amon, they had together placed 52 lakh gold coins on him.
The crowd couldn’t help but look toward the blue-haired young man standing casually on the battlefield.
"Is this real? 52 L-LAKH GOLD COINS ON A SINGLE PERSON?" A man stood up from his seat.
"Not only that... only two people bet on him!" another person shouted.
"Didn’t someone say that he bet 2 lakh gold coins on him?" a woman asked.
"Yes, I was there..." a man responded.
People there were intelligent enough to understand what that meant. As for those who were slow, they probably had to change the soap they used, because it was clearly making them slower.
The screen continued as another glowing name appeared.
123: Kael Draven — 4k 389 gold coins (878)
But people didn’t even bat an eye at the name, as their minds were still trying to figure out what had just happened.
Alice, who was floating in the air, meanwhile had complicated thoughts as the crowd’s attention remained focused on Amon.
*..Ahh... I hate it. Why is he stealing my spotlight?*
*And that bastard is rich too... What did they say? He bet 2 lakh on himself? And there are only two people who bet on him... doesn’t that mean one person bet 50 lakh on him?..*
*Ahh... I really hate him.*
Her thoughts continued to run as a frown appeared on her face. She didn’t realize it, but she was genuinely starting to hate him for absolutely no reason.
People really were complicated, just like their thoughts. They always found the strangest reasons to justify their hatred when, in reality, they were sometimes just being childish.
Amon, who was standing on the battlefield, glanced at the board while the crowd continued shouting about the ridiculous amount they had just seen.
*...50 lakh gold coins, huh... just how much money does she have?*
He wondered silently.
Meanwhile, the people who had calmed down a little began analyzing the situation and forming their own conclusions.
"I’m sure that guy is from a noble family," a man said.
"Idiot. If he was, then why doesn’t anyone recognize him? And he’s participating under Ravenhold, right? Then why haven’t we heard of his family?" another person countered.
"You guys are forgetting something..." another man said.
The crowd turned toward him.
"He already has 52 lakh gold coins bet on him. But what happens if he actually wins the tournament?"
Silence followed.
Everyone’s minds began racing as they imagined the possible amount.
"I don’t even want to imagine it... But that guy is strong. The person who bet 50 lakh on him must be grinning right now."
A female adventurer sighed, a faint look of regret appearing in her eyes.
"Ah... my money. It was my savings," a man sighed.
"Just savings? I was going to buy a house for myself, but now..." another person joined in.
"You losers... that’s nothing compared to my pain! I was going to buy chocolate, but I resisted myself and instead bet on Marcus so I could eat not just one, but many more chocolates!" a woman complained.
Some people sympathized with her and began shouting words of comfort. Most of them were girls, for reasons unknown.
"I feel you, girl..."
"I can’t imagine how you managed to resist yourself. You have earned my respect."
"Did you hear that, Marcus? You must win for all of us!" a woman shouted.
"Yeah! Lady Elara will win!"
"Lucas, beat that guy!"
"Liam! You have to blow him away with your spells!"
Suddenly, all the hopes of the crowd were placed on the other top participants standing on the battlefield, who were now wearing troubled expressions.
Marcus, who was standing near Elara and the other nine participants, sighed in exasperation.
"Damn... look at those hypocrites. I really hate it."
Beside him, Lucas also narrowed his gaze as he glanced toward the crowd that was shouting their names.
"They’re pressuring us now because they think their money is in danger, but they won’t share any of it if one of us wins," he said.
"You guys seem surprised, but that’s just human nature," Elara joined in, amusement visible in her eyes.
She was a lower-ranked noble, so she believed she had some understanding of human nature and their greed to achieve something. Because of that, she thought she was above the others beside her, who hadn’t seen the darker side of the world yet.
But she had forgotten one important thing.
Everyone was a frog inside a veil.
The only difference was that Elara’s veil was simply a little bigger.
