Bohdan Sherwood hesitated for a moment.
He waved to the audience below.
A middle-aged man who looked like a secretary hurriedly ran up to the stage.
Bohdan Sherwood handed the item to him.
The secretary examined it briefly and quickly connected it to the computer.
Behind the podium was a large screen.
The screen flickered briefly.
Soon, the footage Dirk Carter had secretly recorded of Ezekiel Sawyer was played.
When the entire conversation finished playing, most of the people present were astonished. Although the conversation didn't explicitly state what Ezekiel Sawyer intended to do, the snippets suggested that Ezekiel Sawyer was planning a rebellion.
Jamal Palmer was shocked.
Gregory Bates was also shocked.
Though Bohdan Sherwood was surprised, his expression didn't change significantly.
He turned to Dirk Carter in front of him, paused, and asked, "It's Jethro Houseman, right?"
Dirk Carter nodded and said, "It's him."
Everything led up to this moment.
Only now did Bohdan Sherwood show a look of disbelief.
He obviously knew the cause and effect but never imagined that Jethro Houseman would be so bold.
"Anton Lewis, call the higher-ups."
Bohdan Sherwood paused for a moment and then seriously instructed the secretary.
The secretary quickly took out his phone.
After fiddling with it for a while.
His expression also became anxious.
"Leader, there's no signal on the phone."
As he said this.
Others nearby also quickly took out their phones.
Sure enough, all phones had no signal.
"Is there a landline phone?"
Bohdan Sherwood asked Gregory Bates.
Gregory Bates immediately looked at Jamal Palmer.
Jamal Palmer, still terrified, stammered, "Yes, yes, there's one over there."
He pointed to a small room beside the podium.
The secretary named Anton Lewis quickly ran inside and shortly came out with a distraught face, shaking his head, and saying, "The phone lines have been cut."
Realizing things were bad.
Gregory Bates quickly said, "Member Sherwood, this is a trap. We can't stay here. We need to leave immediately. Once we are out of Veridia City, we'll be safe."
"What do you think?"
Bohdan Sherwood asked Dirk Carter.
Clearly, he was beginning to trust Dirk Carter.
Dirk Carter shook his head and said, "Jethro Houseman has planned this for a long time. With the phone lines cut, it means they're acting ahead of schedule. We definitely can't leave from the auditorium, and even if we do, there's no safe place in Veridia City or Janton State."
"Does Jethro Houseman really have such audacity? Even if he dares, isn't he afraid of being condemned by everyone?"
Gregory Bates shouted.
Dirk Carter smirked coldly.
He said, "Secretary Bates, Jethro Houseman managed to plot undetected in Janton State under your jurisdiction. Do you think after this, he won't cover his tracks? No one will know what happened today, and this incident won't be recorded. Member Sherwood will be said to have died suddenly—what does it have to do with him?"
"Impossible! He can't do it! There are hundreds sitting here; are they all blind?"
Gregory Bates argued defiantly.
Dirk Carter's face showed a look of contempt, saying, "Secretary Bates, throughout history, it's the victor who becomes the king, and the defeated the villain. If something happens to Member Sherwood, it's almost certain that someone arranged by the Houseman Family will rise to power. At that time, do you think anyone here will speak for Member Sherwood? Will you? Will you?"
Dirk Carter casually pointed at two people.
The two people lowered their heads shamefully.
Dirk Carter was speaking the truth.
Everyone here was a political figure.
Politicians understand these truths.
"Then what now? We can't leave, staying here—won't they just come for us? Isn't that the same as waiting to die?"
As soon as Gregory Bates finished speaking.
A loud bang echoed from the door through which Dirk Carter had entered the auditorium.
The door shook.
It was clear someone was trying to break in from the outside.
Dirk Carter glanced at Caleb Ford.
Caleb Ford nodded.
Immediately ordered his men to move the tables and chairs piled up nearby to block the door.
After some frantic effort.
The sounds of the door being forced diminished.
Yet everyone's fear reached its peak.
Especially those sitting in the audience.
No one had ever experienced such a situation before, some of the women even started wiping their tears.
"Leaders, are you all right? I'm Dawson Sinclair, the police chief of Veridia City. I heard something had happened here, so I came over with people."
Outside, Dawson Sinclair shouted through a megaphone.
"Rescue is here! Rescue is here..."
Hearing Dawson Sinclair's shout.
Gregory Bates immediately became excited.
He shouted to Caleb Ford's men who were blocking the door, "Hurry up, open the door, let them in, once they're in, we'll be safe."
"Don't open!"
Dirk Carter suddenly shouted.
Caleb Ford's men naturally listened to Dirk Carter.
With his shout.
No one moved.
Gregory Bates was stunned.
He turned angrily to Dirk Carter and said, "What are you doing? The rescue is here, and you won't let them in. Are you trying to kill us?"
"Dawson Sinclair is also one of Ezekiel Sawyer's men. Letting him in is like sending sheep into a wolf's den."
Dirk Carter said.
Gregory Bates didn't like Dirk Carter.
Even as the top leader, he didn't have decision-making power. How could he be pleased with Dirk Carter?
He asked Bellamy Yule, the director of the provincial public security department who came along, "Is Dawson Sinclair reliable?"
Bellamy Yule didn't even hesitate.
Nodded and said, "Secretary Bates, Dawson Sinclair is reliable. When he came to Veridia City as the director, our provincial department vetted him. Absolutely no problem."
Upon hearing this.
Gregory Bates glanced proudly at Dirk Carter.
Seemingly saying, see, I said he's reliable, he's reliable. I said he's a rescuer, he's a rescuer.
"Since that's the case, open the door!"
Gregory Bates again issued the order.
"Don't open the door. Once the door is opened, we're doomed."
Dirk Carter pleaded earnestly.
A furious Gregory Bates finally exploded.
Pointing at Dirk Carter's face, he shouted, "Dirk Carter, who do you think you are, a minor deputy mayor, with so many leaders present? Is our decision-making less than that of a deputy mayor? Open this door now, because I say so."
"Secretary Bates, we're safe as long as we stay in the auditorium. Once we open the door and they break in, it will be too late for regrets."
Dirk Carter argued helplessly.
Desperate to survive, Gregory Bates was in no mood to listen to anything. His only thought was to leave Veridia City as soon as possible.
He waved his hand.
And said to Jamal Palmer, "Take people over and open the door for me. If anything happens, I'll take responsibility!"
