The grand ballroom of the Valemont estate was a suffocating spectacle of wealth, lights, and deafening opulence. Chandeliers made of glittering crystal cast a brilliant, unforgiving glare over hundreds of nobles dressed in silks and jewels, all laughing and drinking in celebration of a lie.
Elian stood completely alone in a dim, shadowed corner near the towering velvet drapes, practically invisible to the swirling sea of bodies. His chest felt hollow, a dull, persistent ache settling deep beneath his ribs as he watched Lucien glide across the polished marble floor.
Lucien looked breathtaking and untouchable in his tailored midnight-blue jacket, his arm securely around Rowena. He was showing her off to the high society of the realm with a practiced, effortless grace. Every smile Lucien offered her, every gentle touch to her waist, felt like a physical blow to Elian’s already fractured heart.
The orchestra swelled, signaling the center of the evening. Lucien stepped up onto the raised dais, pulling Rowena gently with him as the crowd slowly gathered around the base of the stage, murmuring with expectant delight.
"My lords, ladies, and honored guests," Lucien’s voice, clear, deep, and resonant, carried effortlessly across the grand hall, cutting through the murmurs of the elite. "Tonight, we celebrate more than a union of houses; we forge an alliance built on the bedrock of honor, endurance, and a shared vision for a future bound together."
A respectful hush rippled through the sea of silk and jewels, every eye locked onto the dais. But as Lucien paused, his posture shifting ever so slightly, the polished, political cadence in his tone vanished, replaced by an edge of raw, deliberate gravity.
He reached out, his gloved fingers closing around the small velvet box held out by a trembling attendant, flipping the lid open with a quiet snap.
He looked down at Rowena, his green eyes steady and unreadable under the flashing crystal light, promising before the entire kingdom to cherish her, to protect her, and to place her above all else.
"With this ring, I pledge my life to your side, Rowena," he spoke softly, the words carrying a strange, heavy finality that only made the performance feel all the more suffocating to anyone who knew the truth.
With steady fingers, he lifted the magnificent, diamond-encrusted engagement ring from its velvet bed and slid it slowly onto her finger, sealing the public spectacle with a firm, practiced kiss against her lips as the ballroom erupted into deafening applause.
Around Elian, the crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Elian closed his eyes, a fresh wave of agony crashing over him. The sound of clapping felt like knives slicing into his skin. This was it—the definitive end of any lingering, foolish hope he had harbored in the dark corners of his mind. Lucien was entirely out of reach, bound to another woman in the eyes of the law, the court, and the gods.
A heavy tear slipped down his cheek, but as he reached up to wipe it away, a strange, quiet calm settled over him.
He took a slow, grounding breath. This wasn’t the end of the world. It hurt—gods, it hurt worse than anything he had ever endured—but he wasn’t completely alone anymore. He had people who cared for him. He had Finn, who worried over him in secret, and he had Cassian, a man who looked at him with genuine adoration and was ready to love him truly and purely without conditions or cruelty.
I am surviving, Elian told himself, letting out a shaky exhale. I don’t need the devil’s heart.
Deciding he had tortured himself enough, Elian turned his back on the glittering stage and the cheering crowd, preparing to slip away quietly back to the sanctuary of his room.
Just as his fingers brushed the heavy velvet curtain to exit, a frantic commotion broke out near the front of the hall.
A strange maid, her face entirely unfamiliar and pale with terror, shoved her way through the startled nobles. Before the guards could react, she sprinted up the steps of the dais, grabbing the edge of the podium and screaming at the top of her lungs for everyone to listen.
Elian froze, an icy prickle of unease darting down his spine. Something was terribly, catastrophically wrong.
He slowly turned back around, lifting his gaze. Across the crowded room, his eyes suddenly connected with Lucien’s for the first time that night. For a split second, locked in that intense gaze, all the noise of the ballroom faded away. Lucien’s green eyes widened in sudden, sharp alarm.
"Seize her! Take her away immediately!" Lucien commanded his guards, his voice cutting through the hall with desperate authority.
Before the nearest guards could surge up the steps to grab her, the maid shrieked the words that turned the entire night to ash.
"The Duke is having an affair with a man! He doesn’t deserve the princess! He is a hypocrite and a traitor to his vows!"
The whole crowd gasped in collective horror. A dead, suffocating silence fell over the massive ballroom so fast it felt like a physical pressure drop. Every whisper died; every glass paused halfway to a mouth.
Before anyone could recover from the shock, the maid whipped around, her trembling finger extending directly out into the quiet hall, pointing straight at Elian.
"Him! That is the devil seducing the Duke right under your noses!"
Lucien went completely rigid on the stage, the blood draining entirely from his face. He stood frozen, utterly unable to believe what was happening. He had been so careful, so meticulous—how had this secret leaked?
Elian’s face turned deathly ashen. The blood rushed violently in his ears, his whole life flashing before his eyes in a terrifying blur of dungeons, pain, public humiliation, and impending death. If the court found out about him and Lucien, he would be executed as a traitor, and Lucien’s political ambitions would crumble.
Rowena instantly dropped character, her face contorting into a mask of pure devastation. She stumbled back from Lucien, tears springing to her eyes as she began to sob openly.
"Is it true?" she wailed, her voice cracking with theatrical heartbreak loud enough for every noble to hear. "After everything... after my love for you... how could you? How could you betray me with a commoner? With a man?" She clutched her chest, weeping uncontrollably.
Murmurs rose higher and higher.
Lucien clenched his fists tightly, unable to form words to the sudden exposition.
"The only way I could ever forgive you... the only way for me to spare your honor and my heart... is if you prove your loyalty right now. Kill him! Prove he means nothing and kill Elian!"
The crowd, whipped into a frenzy of righteous indignation and scandalized fury, roared in agreement. Shouts of "Traitor!" and "Death to the seducer!" echoed off the marble walls.
Lucien stared out at the baying mob, his chest heaving. He opened his mouth, caught between the total destruction of his life and the life of the man his heart secretly craved. He hesitated, paralyzed by the impossible choice.
But before a single word could escape Lucien’s lips, a calm, commanding presence stepped smoothly into the open space between the crowd and Elian.
It was Cassian.
The chief guard’s face was an unreadable mask of absolute authority as he raised his voice over the murmurs of the crowd.
"Hold your tongues!" Cassian ordered sharply, cutting through the chaos. He turned his head toward the panicked maid on the stage, then swept his gaze across the staring nobles. "The girl speaks from a place of malice and profound misunderstanding. There is no affair with the Duke."
The crowd quieted slightly, watching the king’s favored guard with bated breath.
Cassian turned on his heel, his strides measured and deliberate as he walked right through the parting sea of nobles straight toward a trembling, wide-eyed Elian.
Before anyone could process his movements, Cassian gently cupped Elian’s face in his hands and kissed him softly on the lips.
It was a deliberate, undeniable display of affection, executed in front of hundreds of witnesses.
Cassian pulled back just an inch, keeping his eyes warm and steady on Elian before turning to address the entire stunned hall.
"The girl saw me," Cassian announced clearly, his voice ringing with absolute conviction. "The maid witnessed me and Elian sharing a private, special moment at the riverside earlier today, and in her ignorance, she mistook me for His Grace the Duke."
A fresh wave of gasps rippled through the room.
Lucien’s chest tightened unimaginably.
It was like watching his nightmares play out. His secret coming to light and Cassian kissing Elian. If he weren’t in front of hundreds of people, Cassian’s head would have been on the floor by now.
Cassian didn’t pause, pressing his advantage with calculated precision. "To ensure no further scandalous rumors arise to threaten the Duke and Princess’s engagement, and to clear His Grace’s name of any false accusations, I will be taking Elian back to my own home tonight under my protection. This matter is closed... with the Duke’s permission, of course."
Up on the stage, Lucien’s face darkened into a terrifying, murderous scowl. His fists clenched so tightly at his sides that his knuckles turned completely white, his green eyes flashing with suppressed, jealous fury. Yet, despite the storm raging inside him, he was utterly unable to protest.
To deny Cassian’s claim now would mean admitting the truth—protesting too loudly would mean acceptance of the scandal he was trying so desperately to bury. He was trapped in his own trap.
Reluctantly, he gave a small nod.
Cassian smiled victoriously and wrapped a protective arm securely around Elian’s waist, guiding the shell-shocked man away from the gathering storm, leaving the silent, whispering ballroom behind them as they stepped out into the cool night air.
