A Night of Desire

Chapter 672 - 669: She Lied

Chapter 672: Chapter 669: She Lied

"What was wrong yesterday?" Seth asked, noticing she had trailed off mid-sentence.

"Ah? Oh... it’s just... when Sarah and I were shopping, I saw something that would look really good on you, but I wasn’t sure if you’d like it, so I didn’t buy it. I’ll take you to see it when we have time. If you like it, we’ll buy it."

Clara lied to him instinctively. Perhaps she was genuinely afraid of what Sarah had said—that if Seth found out, he would start reading too much into it and misunderstand her.

A wide smile spread across Seth’s face. "I’ll love it. As long as you’re the one buying it for me, I’ll love it. Next time you see something that seems right, just go ahead and buy it."

"...Okay."

Clara felt a pang of guilt over her lie. Not daring to linger on the topic, she quickly changed it.

"By the way, what ever happened with Brother Jennings going to find Poppy?"

In truth, Clara had been worried sick about the situation. She hadn’t run into Linden Jennings since that day, and while she wanted to call Poppy, she couldn’t summon the courage. After all, she was the one who had failed to keep the secret and betrayed her.

If Linden Jennings had really "dragged" Poppy back, she would probably be furious with her.

"Linden already brought Poppy back. He keeps her in his villa all day now. In any case, it seems pretty much impossible for her to escape again."

"What? So it’s basically house arrest? Won’t Poppy just hate him even more?" Clara grew more worried.

"Of course she will," Seth said, raising an eyebrow. "Apparently, Poppy is refusing to speak to Linden now. Even though he’s explained everything he needed to and apologized for everything he did, she doesn’t seem to have any intention of forgiving him."

"But Linden can’t be bothered with whether she hates him more for it. The most important thing for him right now is having Poppy by his side, ensuring she’ll never disappear from his sight again, never be somewhere he can’t find her."

"How did it turn out like this? The only reasons I told Brother Jennings where Poppy was were because I was worried about her and the baby, and because I thought the whole thing between them was just a misunderstanding. Neither of them was really at fault.

"Brother Jennings didn’t tell Poppy the truth because he wanted to protect her pride and let her live a carefree life.

"And Poppy left without a word because she only wanted to be equals with the man she loved; she didn’t want their relationship to be complicated by anything else.

"So, I thought that as long as the misunderstanding was cleared up, they could go back to the way they were. I just never expected that sometimes, simply talking things out isn’t enough to fix everything between two people."

As she spoke, Clara once again felt that Sarah had been right. ’If she were to tell Seth that she’d spent all of yesterday playing with Sierra Sutton and her son, what would happen? Even if she explained that she’d only met Sierra and her son once before, and that she’d decided to celebrate his birthday with him simply because she’d taken a real liking to the boy...’

’...even if Seth seemed to believe her, there was no guarantee he would trust her in his heart.

’The moment a sliver of doubt entered his heart, their relationship would no longer be pure, and cracks would begin to form.’

And that was a situation she was clearly unwilling to face.

"Why don’t you ask Brother Jennings when would be a good time for me to go see Poppy?" Clara asked, pulling herself out of her thoughts to look at Seth.

"Let’s talk about it in a while. Let Poppy cool down first. Besides, the issues between them are something they ultimately have to resolve themselves."

Clara could only nod.
