A Person with Morals gets Transported to Another World [LitRPG] [Satire]
Chapter 93 – Stay on CourseAs a trio we headed to the ceremony hall when 5 PM rolled around. Hundreds of students were occupying the room. Most had at least one red stamp on their arm like us. Only a few had won three contests in a row.
A 50-year-old man took the stage and addressed the crowd. “Congratulations to all of you for passing the first portion of Sports Day. Let’s hear a round of applause from all the teachers for the spectacular performances by these students.”
The only person on stage was the old man. He clapped half-heartedly following his own directive.
He coughed into his fist and said, “Thank you, teachers. Moving on. You’ll be pleased to know that you only have one competition left. All of you have come so far as teams but there can only be one winner, so the next section is a solo event.”
The students started murmuring. This was unexpected by most.
“Aww, I was hoping we would win as a team,” said Newmill.
On the other hand, Penrin said, “I’m happy to have the chance to crush both of you.” Her competitive spirit was fanned.
The old man continued, “For your information, I am the headmaster of this school, and the proctor for this next test.” He stroked his black beard and combed his grey hair at the same time.
“Didn’t this school have a dean?” I whispered. Why did it have a headmaster too? Also, was he dyeing only his beard?
The headmaster went on while both his hands groomed his head, “In two seconds from now, I shall teleport you into the preparation room where—” A light enveloped me and transported me to another place. The headmaster’s speech was so slow that I got teleported during his explanation.
I found myself in a small grey room. The floor, walls, and ceiling were all soft and cushioned and slightly bouncy. It felt like the room was made of the landing mats used in gymnastics.
In front of me was a table full of various green clothing. Above the table there was a board that read, ‘Choose a singular piece of armour.’
Upon the table I could see a hat, helmet, glasses, scarf, shirt, gloves, trousers, and boots. None of it qualified as armour in my eyes. Etched into the table was a note noting how the clothes were made of cactus leather.
It was difficult to pick which one I wanted to go for when I didn’t know what the contest was. I expected the headmaster wanted to explain the event but had mistakenly teleported us before he got the chance.
The clothing in front of me was classified as armour by the signboard, meaning that I would likely be subjected to attacks in the upcoming contest. My mind at first assumed that each student would be given weaponry to attack others and these armour pieces would provide us some defence.
However, it couldn’t be so simple. If the armour were merely to help defend against attacks, what would that mean for the students who already wore armour? There was something special about the clothing before me.
The classification of it as armour made me assume that it provided safety against something. It was likely in the upcoming event there would be something I needed to defend against that only the armour could save me from.
I immediately considered the sporty nature of today and assumed I would be hit with balls. If a ball hit my armour, I would be considered safe. If it hit any uncovered part of my body, I would be out.
Then where would the balls come from? Other students of course. The contest would likely be dodgeball.
Naturally in such an event, most students would go with the largest piece of armour to cover the most surface area. In that case, the shirt and trousers were best.
Considering that it was easiest to dodge blows to the head, the helmet was the least useful. The most mobile parts of the body like the head, hands, and feet did not need covering. If a ball went towards these body parts, it took no effort to avoid being hit.
The torso was most vulnerable and hardest to avoid being hit. A ball to the chest was harder to dodge than any other body part. Combined with the large surface area of the shirt, it was most strategic to choose it as the armour piece.
The trousers were also viable since you could jump to avoid being hit in the torso.
But then, I realised I was thinking about this too simplistically. Because the board had told me that the clothing was armour, my mind had tunnel visioned on using it as such. Though, what if I considered the armour to be a shield instead? Then the most mobile ones would be most useful.
For example, if I were to wear the gloves, I could swat away any balls that were aimed at any part of my body. I could defend my head, torso, and legs all at the same time.
And I was also assuming that Earth rules would be the same here. What if kicking the ball towards opponents was allowed? Then the boots would be better for offence since kicks are more powerful than throws.
Another thing to consider was that the pair of gloves were a set, but in the contest, I could defend against two incoming balls at once. The boots and gloves were better for their number.
The scarf was also something to consider because it was the longest article of clothing. And there didn’t seem to be a rule that it needed to be worn on the neck. Not that there were any rules explained so far.
With my skillset of being able to predict ball trajectories, I thought the gloves to be best. I picked them and put them on my hands. They fit surprisingly well. I cracked my fingers and got ready for an exciting game of dodgeball. A light came over me and teleported me again.
The headmaster’s voice announced, “Welcome one and all to the final contest of Sports Day: an obstacle course!” A massive crowd of spectators cheered. Around the school were thousands and thousands of people who were sitting on stadium benches. Those weren’t there before.
Below me was a cushiony blue platform a few metres off the ground. Except that the ground was no longer there. The grounds of the school had become red-tinted water. Many blue platforms and pathways were around me. Red obstacles were all over the place too.
The school belltower was now a blue monument. Red gargoyles atop it poured out red water.
The entire school had been transformed into a strange obstacle course somewhat reminiscent of a TV show I once watched.
The headmaster was watching from above inside a floating broadcasting booth. Speaking into a microphone he said, “You students will try to survive this obstacle course. Touching anything that is red will result in a loss. Of course, blue is a-okay to touch. Green objects like your armour are interactable.”
I looked around and saw that there were small green objects at several locations surrounding me. The path to get to them was perilous though.
Going on, the headmaster said, “You may thwart the winning chances of other students, however you cannot do anything to cause your fellow students to lose HP. Here are some suggestions to avoid that. Instead of punching someone, try pushing them. Instead of kicking someone, try tripping them. Instead of casting a death hex on someone, try not doing that.”
Causing other students to lose would be a big part in this obstacle course. Nearby, I could already see students eyeing others up, looking for weaker opponents to push into the red water below.
I did not know whether I regretted my decision to choose gloves yet. I was wrong in my dodgeball assumption, but I was right that these armour pieces would protect against special attacks.
In the distance, I saw a student had picked boots, and next to them was a checkerboard of blue and red. They could walk right through without having to worry about stepping on only blue.
Getting to the green interactable objects was the best course of action. They were likely powerful tools to aid in victory. Otherwise, there would be no reason to move through the course, and students could just stay on their starting platforms.
The headmaster said, “The last person standing is the winner.” He hesitated before speaking some more. “Uhm, you may all be wondering why I didn’t give this explanation before teleporting you.”
I was 90% sure it was a mistake.
The headmaster said, “You see, it’s because great minds work in mysterious ways.”
I was 100% sure it was a mistake.
