Vincent.
I had already known Maria was trying to cover up for him.
The moment I saw the determination in her eyes, I understood exactly what she was doing. She wanted to protect Noah, even if it meant deceiving me. But I wasn’t foolish enough to fall for such a simple trick.
So, I decided to play along.
I acted as though I believed every word she said, allowing my expression to remain calm until the very moment she walked out of the room. The instant the door closed behind her, I gave a subtle signal to my guards. It was so quick that no one would have noticed it.
They already knew what to do.
I had instructed them beforehand to remain outside and seize whoever was hiding inside the room the second Maria left, and take the person straight to the punishment room.
A slow smile tugged at the corner of my lips.
Just as I had expected.
Without wasting another second, I pushed the heavy door open and stepped inside the punishment room. The smile on my face widened the instant my eyes landed on the figure tied securely to the wooden chair.
It was indeed him.
Noah.
A soft chuckle escaped my lips as I folded my arms across my chest, staring at him with amusement.
"How does it feel to be outsmarted?" I asked casually.
I couldn’t deny how satisfying the sight before me was.
His wrists were bound tightly behind the chair, leaving him unable to move freely, while a thick piece of cloth covered his eyes completely. He couldn’t even see who was standing before him, yet he remained surprisingly composed.
"What do you want from me, Vincent?" he asked angrily, struggling against the ropes restraining his hands behind the chair.
I let out another quiet laugh.
"You seem to have a pretty good sense of hearing, Noah," I said, amusement dripping from every word. My expression hardened almost instantly. "But how dare you call me by my name?" I yelled.
"What now?" Noah asked before bursting into loud laughter. "Isn’t that your name, loser?"
My smile disappeared immediately.
A deep frown settled on my face as irritation surged through my veins.
"Who the hell are you referring to as a loser?" I asked furiously.
"Is there anyone else standing in this room aside from you?" he asked mockingly.
A slow, taunting laugh escaped his lips, every word laced with ridicule.
"Maria would never open up her heart to love you," he said firmly.
His voice carried absolute certainty, as though there wasn’t the slightest doubt in his mind. After a brief pause, he tilted his head slightly despite the cloth covering his eyes.
"Doesn’t that make you a loser?" he asked.
"You—!" I yelled.
The single word tore from my throat before I could stop myself.
Rage exploded inside me, burning through every ounce of self-control I had left. In two long strides, I closed the distance between us and seized him by the neck.
My fingers wrapped tightly around his throat.
I squeezed harder and harder.
The ropes binding him to the chair creaked as he instinctively struggled against them. His body tensed, his breathing became uneven, and his face gradually lost its color.
His lips parted as he desperately fought for air.
Still, I refused to loosen my grip.
I wanted him to feel every second of it.
I wanted him to understand exactly who held his life in his hands.
His face turned paler by the second, and the veins around his neck became more pronounced as he struggled to breathe.
Then...I suddenly let go.
Noah immediately bent forward as much as the ropes allowed, dragging in several desperate breaths. He coughed violently, his chest rising and falling as he struggled to catch his breath.
I simply watched him.
Without saying another word, I held his gaze, studying every flicker of emotion that crossed his face. The anger, the defiance, the hatred burning in his eyes—it was all there for me to see. Slowly, almost unconsciously, the corner of my lips lifted into a smirk. It spread across my face with deliberate ease, unhurried and filled with quiet amusement.
This wasn’t satisfying.
It wasn’t nearly enough.
Giving him such an easy death should be completely out of the question. That would be far too merciful. A quick end would only spare him from the pain he deserved. It would allow him to escape before he truly understood what it meant to lose everything.
No.
That wasn’t what I wanted.
Before he dies, I need to prove to him exactly who the real loser is. I need him to witness it with his own eyes, to realize it when there is nothing left he can do to change it. Only then would his defeat be complete.
Still wearing that faint smirk, I leaned closer until only he could hear me. My voice dropped into a low, confident whisper meant for his ears alone.
"You know what, Noah?" I said, my smile never wavering. "When you’re dead... Maria will definitely forget about you."
The corners of my lips lifted even higher.
"It might be slow," I continued calmly, "but if I keep showing up... if I keep comforting her whenever she breaks down, she’ll eventually grow to love me."
Silence filled the room.
Noah’s face grew even paler.
"Maria would never forgive you once she finds out you killed me!" Noah yelled immediately.
His voice echoed through the punishment room, trembling with fury. He struggled violently against the ropes restraining him, but they refused to give way.
"Especially if you did it to gain her love," he added through gritted teeth.
The conviction in his voice made me burst into laughter.
A slow, amused laugh escaped my lips as I shook my head.
"That’s if she finds out about it, Noah," I said calmly, my tone dripping with confidence. "Tell me..." I paused deliberately, allowing my words to sink in before continuing. "What if she first sees you in bed with another woman?"
A satisfied smile spread across my face.
"What do you think she’ll believe?" I asked. "Do you think she’d care about your death after seeing something like that?"
"You—!" Noah yelled.
His entire body tensed as he tried once again to free himself, but the ropes held him firmly in place. The chair shifted slightly beneath him as he struggled, yet there was nothing he could do.
He was completely helpless.
Watching him like this only made my smile widen.
"Oh, I think it’s better that way," I continued, my voice remaining disturbingly calm. "She’ll run away because she won’t be able to face you after witnessing such betrayal."
I let out a quiet chuckle before speaking again.
"And then, the next time she sees you..." I said slowly, savoring every word, "...it’ll be your lifeless body." I folded my arms across my chest. "A man who supposedly died because he couldn’t bear the guilt of what he’d done."
A bright smile settled on my face, even though I knew the cloth over his eyes prevented him from seeing it.
"You are a monster!" Noah yelled at me, his voice filled with disgust and hatred and his fists clenched behind the chair as much as the ropes allowed. "And I am going to kill you!" he added with unwavering determination.
I laughed out loud.
The sound echoed throughout the punishment room, breaking the tense silence between us. I couldn’t help myself. Watching him tied helplessly to the chair while he continued making empty threats was strangely amusing.
A smirk tugged at the corner of my lips as I slowly shook my head.
"How do you intend to kill me?" I asked, thoroughly enjoying every bit of his reaction. There was obvious mockery in my voice, and I made no effort to hide it.
I let out another quiet chuckle.
"Is it like this?" I asked sarcastically, my amusement only growing stronger.
"You are really ruthless!" he yelled.
His voice was filled with anger, yet it carried an unwavering confidence that irritated me more than I cared to admit.
"But let me tell you something..." he continued, speaking each word with absolute certainty. He paused briefly before finishing his sentence. "No matter what you do..." he said. "Even if you make her hate me..." He drew in a slow breath. "She would never love you!"
The words struck harder than they should have.
I froze.
For a brief moment, the smile on my face disappeared completely.
My jaw tightened as a surge of frustration coursed through me. Without realizing it, I clenched my fists so tightly that my fingernails dug painfully into my palms.
"I will prove you wrong, Noah!" I yelled.
My voice rang through the room, filled with anger and determination.
Noah only laughed.
The laughter continued for several moments, calm and unwavering, as though my words meant absolutely nothing to him.
Eventually, it faded.
"We shall see about that," he said after a while of laughter, his tone carrying a confidence that only made my blood boil even more.
