Maria.
I had completely lost my cool, the frantic rush of adrenaline shattering my composure entirely. I abruptly moved away from Davian, breaking his hold on me, and walked over to sit heavily on the edge of the bed, my hands trembling in my lap.
Is Noah in danger?
The terrifying question echoed relentlessly in the hollow silence of my mind. It didn’t make any sense.
He couldn’t simply be avoiding seeing or meeting up with me just because he felt Vincent had his eyes on him. Something far more sinister had to be happening behind the scenes, and the unknown was eating me alive.
"What’s wrong, Maria?" Davian asked gently, his voice breaking through my spiraling thoughts as he walked over and sat down right beside me on the mattress.
The dark, overwhelming desire that had once clouded his face was gone, completely replaced by genuine, deep concern. He looked at me with a soft, worried intensity, his wolf’s lust yielding entirely to his need to comfort me.
"Noah!" I said immediately, the name bursting from my lips like a desperate plea. "I have a really bad feeling about this." I added, my voice cracking under the sheer weight of my anxiety.
"Come on, Maria," Davian said softly, reaching out as he gently patted my back in a slow, soothing rhythm. "Nothing is going to happen to Noah. He knows how to take care of himself." He added reassuringly, trying his best to anchor me in the middle of the storm.
I simply nodded my head, pretending to accept his comfort, although I hardly believed a single word of it. A dark intuition was gnawing at my gut, refusing to be silenced.
Everything was just happening far too fast, spinning wildly out of our control, and honestly, I was kind of scared. The suffocating reality of our situation was closing in on us from all sides.
What if our escape failed completely?
What if I eventually had to marry Vincent tomorrow?
Wouldn’t that be the absolute end of my life?
The thought alone made my blood run cold. I really couldn’t live with him, trapped in a golden cage, forced to endure his touch for the rest of my days.
"Arrrrghhhhh!" I screamed inwardly, pulling at the roots of my hair in my mind as panic threatened to drown me. "Absolutely nothing must go wrong with this plan!" I thought fiercely, steeling my resolve.
Driven by a sudden, intense wave of determination, I immediately turned my entire body to face Davian.
"You have to start marking out the area right now," I said calmly, forcing an artificial stillness into my voice to mask the terror raging inside me. "You and your brothers have to hurry up and finalize the route." I added, holding his gaze with relentless focus.
"I don’t want to leave you, Maria," Davian paused, his eyes searching mine with a profound, aching sorrow. "Allow me to stay with you tonight and—" He continued, his voice thick with emotion.
But he didn’t get to finish his plea, as I cut him short before he could weaken my resolve any further.
"Tell me..." I paused, holding his gaze firmly, refusing to let him look away for even a fraction of a second. "Do you want me to eventually get married to the Lycan prince and officially become his Lycan Princess?" I asked, laying the brutal truth right out in the open between us.
Davian swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as his face went pale, the stark reality of my words hitting him like a physical strike.
"Why are you suddenly thinking of such terrible things?" he asked, his voice strained as he immediately reached out and held my hands in his, clutching them tightly as if trying to shield me from the very fate I described.
I took a deep breath, letting the cool air steady the frantic pulse fluttering in my throat, and pulled my hands gently away from his.
"Well, if you don’t go and inform your brothers right now..." I paused, letting the silence stretch between us to emphasize the stakes before holding his gaze with absolute gravity. "...there will be no escape, and I will end up as his wife." I added, every word dripping with stark, undeniable reality.
Davian immediately shook his head, a violent gesture of absolute denial, and stood up from the bed in a flash of raw emotion.
"I won’t allow that, Maria!" he said, his voice dropping into a harsh, protective growl that echoed off the quiet walls of the room. "And if worse comes to worst, I would rather die alongside him in battle than let you marry him and sacrifice your happiness for the rest of your life!" He added, the fierce resolve in his eyes proving he meant every single word.
And without a moment’s hesitation, he turned toward the door and left hurriedly, slipping out into the dark hallway like a shadow, driven by a renewed, frantic sense of urgency.
The moment the heavy wooden door clicked shut behind him, I breathed out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. The suffocating tension in the room finally began to dissipate, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
’I have to be optimistic,’ I told myself, clutching my trembling hands together. ’Nothing will go wrong. The plan will work, I will escape this nightmare, and I will be with Noah forever.’
I stood up from the edge of the bed and walked over to stand directly in front of the tall, ornate mirror resting against the wall. The dim light flickered against the glass, casting long shadows across my pale face.
’But if worse truly comes to worst,’ I thought with cold, unyielding determination, staring directly into my own eyes, ’I would rather die by my own hand than marry Vincent and be chained to him.’
The thought was absolute, a final line drawn in the sand. But almost instantly, a wave of sickening guilt washed over me, shattering my resolve.
But wouldn’t that cause Noah an unimaginable amount of pain?
If I took my own life, wouldn’t it destroy his soul completely?
Oh no!
’That’s entirely wrong!’ I scolded myself, my chest tightening with horror at the selfish thought. ’I have to stay alive.’
No matter what happens, no matter how dire the circumstances get, I have to survive for Noah.
Desperate for reassurance, I tried mind linking Noah once again, pushing my energy out into the darkness to find the familiar warmth of his mind. But the connection just didn’t seem to pull through. There was no response, no echo—it was more like he had blocked it off intentionally from his end, shutting down the link to keep me out.
I heaved a deep, heavy sigh, my heart sinking further into my chest.
"I hope you are okay, Noah..." I muttered silently into the quiet room, watching my own worried reflection flicker in the dimly lit glass.
