Damien.

"Did you return to pay for your sins with your life?" I asked her, my voice dripping with deep annoyance and sharp irritation as I glared down at her.

I aggressively fought against my own body, trying my absolute best to ignore the magnetic, suffocating pull of the bond that slammed into my senses, all while my mind frantically raced to put the fragmented pieces of this nightmare together.

"Alpha Damien!" Patricia called out softly, her voice smooth, calm, and maddeningly composed. "Didn’t my husband promise to carry out the justice himself?" She asked, gently tilting her head and raising her brows up in mocking amusement, as if my presence were nothing more than a slight inconvenience to her morning walk.

The hell!

I stood there, seething, as a wave of hot fury surged through my veins. I really couldn’t believe she had the absolute audacity to speak to me in such an unbothered, arrogant tone.

She was clearly hiding behind the formidable wall of Darren’s protection, weaponizing his name, and if it weren’t for the innocent life—the seed growing inside her—I would have lost control and slapped her hard across the face right then and there.

But as infuriating as her presence was, her brazen attitude wasn’t really the main issue keeping my mind in turmoil.

What bothered me the absolute most, gnawing relentlessly at my gut, was the glaring impossibility of the timing: why on earth was I only feeling this overwhelming bond pull right now?

When I had tried to mark Maria back then, Patricia was obviously still somewhere around the territory, living her life.

If the bond existed between us, then why didn’t it react at all back then?

Why had my wolf remained completely silent until this exact moment?

And could she really be Maria’s twin sister?

My thoughts flashed back to the ancient texts I had tirelessly pored over in the study. From what I had read, it clearly stated that an alternating bond was an extraordinarily rare anomaly, and such a volatile glitch in the mate connection could often be attributed to the unique, shared soul-frequency of twins.

My face darkened, casting severe, dangerous shadows over my features as I locked my gaze onto her, refusing to let her slide away from my scrutiny.

"Tell me something, Patricia," I said, my tone dropping into a low, deadly rumble as I clenched my fists so tightly that my knuckles turned stark white. "Are you a twin?" I asked, holding her eyes with an unyielding intensity as I waited for the answer that could shatter everything we thought we knew.

Patricia chuckled instantly, the sudden, light sound fluttering through the quiet garden air.

"What do you mean by twin?" she asked in genuine amusement, tilting her head as if the very concept were completely absurd. "I am not!" she added, shaking her head with an easy and untroubled smile.

I looked at her intently, my eyes narrowing as I searched every subtle shift in her expression, looking for any minuscule twitch, flicker, or micro-reaction that could pass as her lying to my face—but there was simply nothing. Her expression remained infuriatingly calm and completely transparent.

"Are you absolutely sure about that?" I asked her again, my voice dropping an octave as I pressed her, refusing to let the matter drop so easily.

Patricia took a slow, deliberate step forward, her hand moving smoothly down to caress the slight curve of her stomach in a protective, motherly gesture.

"Why do you care so much if I am?" she asked, her gaze locking firmly onto mine.

The faint amusement that had lingered in her eyes only moments ago gradually faded, replaced by something far more guarded.

Her tone shifted almost imperceptibly, growing subtly defensive, as though my question had struck a nerve she hadn’t intended to reveal.

I immediately raised a brow, suspicion settling over me in an instant. Every instinct I possessed as an Alpha sharpened, latching onto the sudden change in her expression, her posture, and the carefully measured way she spoke. It wasn’t dramatic, but it was enough. I had learned long ago that the smallest reactions often concealed the biggest truths.

Does she know something else?

The thought flashed through my mind with startling clarity, sending a sharp surge of intrigue coursing through me. My attention became completely fixed on her, searching for even the slightest crack in her composure.

What if she actually knows who Maria’s twin sister really is?

What if she had been hiding a crucial piece of the puzzle all along—a single truth capable of tearing this entire secret wide open and exposing everything that had remained hidden until now?

"Oh!" she suddenly ejaculated dramatically, placing a delicate hand against her chest as a look of sudden realization washed over her features. "I can recall you already asked me this exact same thing back then when I was locked in the prison," she paused, stepping just an inch closer as her voice dropped, barely rising above a hushed whisper. "Is there something specific you are suspecting?" she asked, her eyes searching my face with probing curiosity.

I smiled—a slow, calculated expression—knowing fully well that a woman like her cannot be trusted under any circumstances. Giving her even a fraction of the truth would only hand her ammunition to use against us. I decided right then and there that I would rather investigate everything slowly and meticulously on my own to unearth what exactly the truth is, rather than let her know the real reason why I was questioning her so aggressively.

"Yes, Patricia," I said, letting out a long, deliberate breath as I squared my shoulders, letting my smile fade into a cold, inscrutable mask. "I suspect there are a lot of things you don’t know." I added, heavy with unspoken implication.

The color instantly drained from her skin, and Patricia’s face paled as my words struck their mark, leaving her standing frozen in the misty morning air.
