Patricia.

My face paled immediately at his heavy, loaded words, a cold spike of anxiety shooting straight through my chest. But after a few fraught minutes of silence passed between us, I forced a small, sharp chuckle to escape my lips, masking my inner turmoil behind a mask of unbothered composure.

He wasn’t entirely wrong in his dark assumption, but at the exact same time, he was fundamentally wrong about what I did and didn’t know.

My mother always used to tell me everything back when she was still here, sharing the hidden secrets of our family without holding back.

My mother was actually still alive, but for some completely unknown reason that she refused to fully explain to me, she suddenly left the pack on the exact day I turned eighteen.

She had looked at me with an intense, unyielding gravity and said she had deeply important issues to attend to far away, sternly instructing that I shouldn’t bother looking for her under any circumstances, for she would return on her own terms when the time was right.

Months had passed by since that fate-filled day, but there was still no news from her, leaving me suspended in a frustrating web of unanswered questions.

I looked at Damien straight in the eyes, holding his dark, brooding glare without flinching, and even through his harsh exterior, I could clearly tell there was a chaotic storm of thoughts going on with him right now.

But what on earth does he desperately need Maria’s twin for?

What mess could possibly require dredging up a ghost from the past?

Moreover, deep down, it was actually true that Maria had a twin. That wasn’t just a wild theory; it was a persistent, hushed rumour that my father would always vehemently dismiss and claim was absolute nonsense whenever it was brought up around him.

But behind closed doors, I had heard most of the old pack wet nurses quietly claim that my father’s wife had actually suffered a stillborn baby, born alongside Maria on that fateful night.

According to their whispers, the tragic death of that stillborn twin was the actual cause of Maria’s mother’s sudden hemorrhage and death.

And to make the whole tangled web even more suspicious, both of our mothers had given birth on the exact same day, in the exact same secluded cottage, assisted by the very same midwives.

I also heard that my father had conveniently been miles away on pack business that entire day, completely absent while everything unfolded.

Looking at Damien again, staring at the sheer weight of desperation and confusion etched into the hard lines of his face, he looked oddly pitiful in that moment—an Alpha completely blind to the full story, trapped in a game he didn’t even realize was being played around him.

"You are partially right!" I said after a long, heavy while, breaking the suffocating silence between us. "But there are things I know that you don’t," I added calmly, tilting my head slightly as I met his fierce, probing stare.

Damien immediately reached out and grabbed my hand tightly, his fingers crushing my skin in an iron grip. I nearly panicked on the spot, cold terror slamming into my chest as vivid, painful images of Darren’s tight, punishing grip and brutal punches resurfaced violently in my head. A wave of instinctual fear washed over me, making my breath hitch in my throat.

I immediately fought back, desperately pulling and freeing myself from his harsh grip before taking a rapid step backwards to put safe distance between us.

"Tell me everything you know!" Damien commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, authoritative growl as he completely ignored my visibly panicked reaction to his physical contact.

But suddenly, all my curiosity evaporated, and all I wanted was to immediately leave this garden, fleeing back indoors before Darren woke up and started looking for me, and ended up unleashing his volatile anger on me once again. The thought of Darren finding us together made my blood run cold.

"Speak!" Damien yelled, the harsh command exploding through the quiet air with enough force to make me flinch. His voice echoed around the room, sharp and unforgiving, leaving no room for hesitation or silence.

I immediately swallowed hard, my throat tightening painfully as a heavy lump lodged itself there like solid lead. My entire body stiffened beneath the crushing weight of the moment, and I instinctively squeezed my eyes shut, desperately trying to shield myself from the overwhelming pressure bearing down on me.

’Relax, Patricia!’ I pleaded with myself inwardly, struggling to keep my thoughts from spiralling out of control. My heart pounded violently against my ribs like a trapped bird frantically searching for a way to escape. ’He is not Darren. He isn’t going to hurt you like Darren does.’

I clung to those words, repeating them over and over in my mind as though they were the only thing keeping me grounded. After forcing myself to gather the scattered pieces of my shattered nerves and calming my frantic breathing, if only for a brief moment, I slowly opened my eyes.

The first thing I saw was Damien standing directly before me, his expression deeply furious, his patience visibly worn thin as he waited for me to speak.

"Maria does have a twin!" I said immediately, throwing the truth out into the open to satisfy his dangerous urge. "But I don’t know who it is!" I paused, letting out a sharp, ragged breath as I scrambled to deliver the rest of the murky details. "Some say the twin might still be alive somewhere out there, while others claim it was a stillborn!" I added, my voice echoing off the surrounding greenery.

And without waiting even a fraction of a second for his reply, I turned sharply on my heel and stormed off, my heart pounding in my ears.

I really wasn’t comfortable in his presence anymore, and above all else, Darren mustn’t realize I wasn’t loyally by his side when he called for me.
